Zorba the Greek is an excellent, wonderful novel! Also, you should check out the very good 1964 film starring Anthony Quinn in his most famous role. The film also has a splendid Academy Award winning performance by Leila Kedrova. Zorba the Greek was turned into a fascinating, very moving Broadway musical in the late 1960s by Kander and Ebb, the same team that wrote Cabaret and Chicago. The musical has been successfully revived and is well checking out--there are at least two fine recordings of the score. Enjoy Zorba while you're in Greece! 🙂
excited to see your thoughts on Orbital! I started reading it after seeing your Goodreads updates and then was delighted to see it made the booker prize longlist
A retelling recommendation: Kassandra by christa Wolf (a German author who grew up in the Democratic Republic of Germany). It's a feminist retelling of the Trojan War (published in the early 1980s - way before the current trend), written in a stream of consciousness style and with a focus on the networks within Troy (women, palace guards...). It's also a commentary on the political situation in Eastern Germany at the time. A fantastic read!
when jack mentioned wanting to read a book from each country in the world, i really want him to reach mythological fiction from India, especially the Shiva Trilogy by Amish Tripathi and also books by Anand Neelakanthan
You will love "James"! I really really enjoyed reading it. ♥ Looking forward to your August books haha They sound all very interesting. When visiting the UK two weeks ago, I bought myself "A magical girl retires", "Monstrilio" , "White cat black dog"and "Emperor of Rome". Rather short ones, except for the historian ones (but this one is so much fun to read tbh). I really need to get a grasp at the Booker Prize list books as well. "The Safe Keep" sounds sooo interesting to me. I love strange books. ♥
@@anurlailika Neither have I, tbh! It really doesn't matter since the main focus lies on James as a slave and his life. So, I say yes! You will enjoy it.♥
@@Kyounzuhey thank you for the reply! I’m even more eager to read it now 🤩 quick question, have you read Demon Copperhead? Since its in the same realm of classics retelling
I read James last month, it’s exceptional. Other reimaginings on my TBR include Julia, by Sandra Newman (1984 retelling), and Lady MacBeth, by Ava Reid
Love the name of your channel. I also wanted to start one regardig books but fear of failure stopped me. I will do so this month. Thanks for the inspiration
I'm so curious to hear what you'll say about Zorba! I recently read it (also on a trip to Greece) and loved the language but I absolutely HATED the protagonist and basically all men in the novel because they're so misogynistic that it felt hard to empathize with them, especially Zorba himself 💔
Yes yes yes! Thank you:) I know now that I am not overreacting:) Exactly for that reason I stopped, it was triggering me too much🤬😅 I don’t get it, honestly, in the country where mothers and grandmothers are treated with such respect.. also this book was published in 1952, exactly the year when women received the right to vote.. does the story and language worth it? Should I power through?
@@anastasia1391q omg yess!!! tbh i don't feel like you're missing out if you don't continue 😅 it's not like there's really a crescendo other than another cruel pretty triggering scene toward a woman...
I came across Jack Edwards' account a few months ago. I wanted to read something very nice and refreshing, and I took the suggestion from Jack and read A Pslam of the wild built. Oh my heart, it was a very warm read, and now I am reading the Bee sting, hovering here to find my next read. Also, what is TBR? I see that a lot. What does that mean?
Hey Jack and everyone!😊 Would love to hear your thoughts on Zorba the greek!:) especially of depiction of women vs men there. I don’t want to spoil it but I had to take some distance from this book for a while even though it is so beautifully poetic😢 did I overreact?
I am not interested in James, though everyone raves about it and I guess it is because, as a French person, I have zero knowledge about Huckleberry Finn? Please anyone make me want to read that book ahah!! I’m normally interested in 95% of what Jack recommends! Also, I prefer the orange cover personally! 🧡 and please update your Goodreads! 🥰
Bonne lecture ;)
this is kind of off topic but idk i feel like ranting about being a "writer" idk why but basically im writing this book right and i feel like no one else cares abt it apart from me, ive only had feedback from ai and it's not really helping bc i want people to read it but i feel like it's awful and no one will ever want to read any of it and i should never write again what do i do chat?😆😆
So you've read intermezzo then, since if you haven't already it would have been on your reading list Why didn't we get a video about it, i have searched every single video to get your opinion on it, and nothing... I feel betrayed😢
it's bc it hasn't come out yet and he says he doesn't want to post a review about too long before it comes out so he's probably gonna post the review the week of the official release, also he said he wants to wait to read intermezzo so he can take his time with it, he might not have read it yet
Hello from New England! I just ordered the U.K. edition of James because I loved that the endpapers contain a map: the map is lacking from the U.S. edition which is curious as geography is a theme of the story. It’s an absolutely gorgeous novel, so painful and so beautifully written.
The best reimagining of a Mark Twain character is that of Tom Sawyer by Stephen King and Peter Straub’s book, The Talisman. I hope to god you are proven wrong. Again you always seem to ignore books written by indigenous authors. It is like you want to shut your eyes and make us not exist. Where really is your POC? Troll me for my opinion but I have been trying to get Jack to pick up any native author for a few years now.
First of all i want to thank Jack for inspiring me to read so much great literary Fiction, and also Olive from @abookolive for recommending excellent nonfiction reads.
