My grandmother has about 6 of these plants. She planted them when I was born and at my age (24) they’re almost tree looking. We used to feed them to our Iguanas and turtles, but never knew we could eat them or even make tea out of them. Really good to know!!!
I have never used this type of hibiscus. I have read that not all hibiscus are edible, and some may cause you to get sick. I am currently growing a variety called roselle hibiscus. The whole plant is edible and leaves have a sour/acidic taste to them along with the calyx. It is a very different looking plant, so I wouldn't recommend treating all hibiscus the same.
What you have is also known as sorrel and goes by many names, but is not related plant to the hibiscus plant in the video. They have similar benefits as well. I use the same flower type you have to make a Jamaican drink, Sorrel for the holidays. Cheers
Really? As in the China Hibiscus that is peach? I really wanted to try it but I am scared of the danger. Does it mean I can candy them too? Thank you so much for the info!
This is not the hibiscus one brews for tea. The Hibiscus tea we hear about are the sepals of the Roselle (Sabdariffa flower) ,they're the one with blood pressure regulating, cholesterol lowering and anti-cancer properties.
The only hibiscus I know of to have medicinal value is Hibiscus sabdariffa...I'm not sure that other hibiscus species are edible or not. But traditionally sabdariffa is the species used in Herbalism and you use the calyx or the closed flower. I'm finishing a 700hr herbal program taught by herbalist who own herb stores and have done clinical work for years out of Arizona.
I love rosehip and hibiscus tea personally. We have a hibiscus fplant my dad gave to my mom before he passed, and now to make our own rosehip and hibiscus tea we just need rosehips! This video was definitely helpful and thanks for sharing.
I have the Southern Althea plant form the Hibiscus family: Hibiscus syriacus The article I read indicated it was safe to make a tea. But do you know if it has the same healthy 'restorative' properties? Still doing research, but hoping someone actually knows something first hand. .
Or Hibiscus elatus or H. tiliaceus or H. coccineus as well as many others. As far as I know it is the calyx of the flower which is to be used in tea, although there is no harm in using the petals.
Any ideas on edibility of hibiscus rosa sinensis peach. The pink/red ones are good for tea but are the peach ones too? Please let me know if you have an idea.
My tortoises eat all varieties of hibiscus specially this one is edible but I think for our taste it'll be a little bit bitter. So I prefer Rosella hibiscus. Also her method does not looks good for consuming but excellent for hair treatment, I would add honey.
Hi, I was told that a person died from drinking Hibiscus flower tea. Is this possible? What kind of flower is good, what flower is dangerous? Check out "Hibiscus leaf and flower as per ayurveda" by Hebbar. This person claims that only the white and red are useful. Please research before drinking.
Me I make hibiscus tea and jam from different colors of hibiscus. They are all safe to eat, however not recommended for pregnant women. It may cause abortion. Please see my vlog about making hibiscus tea and hibiscus jam. They have details based on my research Ma'am. Thanks!
Anybody know what is Hybetez Remedy about? I hear many individuals fix their high blood pressure issue naturally with this high blood pressure treatment.
I grew some of the Roselle from seed last year in my garden in Georgia. They made calyces that I could harvest at the end of the season, but it was so much trouble that I just bought the stuff in bulk this year.
This video really should be taken down before they hurt someone from using the wrong hibiscus! In this video there using the wrong one!Can be poisonous☠
Actually there isn’t a “right” hibiscus flower to use. It’s just the most common, not the only kind. The 2 ones used is hibiscus sinesis and sabdariffa. She was using sinensis.
This video is not that helpful, I think everyone knows how to separate leaves from the plant. This is more a recipe, the title gives the impression that this video is about when and how to grow the flowers and harvest them

Don't use this wrong plant
This is not the species used for Roselle, called Flor de Jamaica, or Karkadé. One should use sabdirifa blossoms.
Hibiscus flowers are good to use for many remedies.
Wow thank you so much! I'm drinking hibiscus tea also!
People Both species of hibiscus are edible and healthy Hibiscus Rosa-sinensis and hibiscus sabdariffa!

is it bad if i am trying to get pregnant?
Yes actually. It's not recommended to consume hibiscus if you're pregnant or nursing or trying to get pregnant
Hibiscus tea does not come from hibiscus petals. It comes from the calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa plants ala Roselle.
Thanks for posting this information! You are correct.
I grew some of the Roselle from seed last year in my garden in Georgia. They made calyces that I could harvest at the end of the season, but it was so much trouble that I just bought the stuff in bulk this year.
Thanks for the info.I was debating on if I should grow them.
is there a video which describes the proper process?
Yeah. People are really going to remember that
Use the bulb.
Bitter is actually very healthy for your gut!
I'm no expert but doesn't tea usually involved with oxidation
This is not a tea this is a infused drink
Awesome...hibiscus tea is way high in antioxidants...check out Michael Greger's youtubes on teas.
Careful, you need the right hibiscus! (Hibiscus sabdariffa)
nice
8 flowers for 4 cups of water? Or 8 petals for 4 cups of water?
8 FLOWERS
Thanks ten yrs later
Why is it blue!!?
Thanku
That's different kind of hibiscus for tea 😊
Did you mean eight flowers or eight petals? Eight flowers does not equal 2 tablespoons 1:18
The tablespoon measurement is likely for dried hibiscus. And she said 8 FLOWERS, not petals.
Hmmm
why my hibiscus tea turned violet not red?
fliptopsbattle could be the strain of hibiscus
May be your water is acidic😢
it’s normal if it’s violet if you want it to be red, then add some lemon juice. Six years ago lol
This video really should be taken down before they hurt someone from using the wrong hibiscus! In this video there using the wrong one!Can be poisonous☠
very beautiful eyes.
Hibiscus flowers don't have scent.
I was like "Why the hell did this lady just smell it?"
This isn't the right kind of hibiscus flower lady. You got it all wrong!
What's the "right kind"?
Golan Remmen, rosella flowers also called Jamaica in Spanish.
Actually there isn’t a “right” hibiscus flower to use. It’s just the most common, not the only kind. The 2 ones used is hibiscus sinesis and sabdariffa. She was using sinensis.
