There was also a 4th brother, oldest - Vladimir Stastny. He was a goalie but never left Czechoslovakia. Later he was goalie coach for Slovak National Team and was in team when they got gold, silver and bronze medal. Also great guy and very talented goalie. Unforutnetly he died last year at the age of 77.
That's unbelievable. Thanks for putting that out there.
I don't know if people knew how hard it was for Czech and Soviet players to come to the NHL before the fall of the Iron Curtain.
People know comrade! ;)
Not sure, if that is on purpose, but Marian is 70 today. All the best to him
Reminder that Peter Stastny was the second most productive player of the 80s behind Wayne Gretzky
Shannon, Peter is the middle brother and Anton is the youngest. Marián (1953), Peter (1956), Anton (1959). (they also have a younger sister). Otherwise, a great video Shannon. Always happy to hear something good about Slovakia 🇸🇰 , my home country :)
👍 Yes, and an older brother, Vladimir (1945).
🇸🇪
Two older brothers actually: Vladimir (1945) and Bohumil (1947)
Meeting Peter and Anton Stastny in 1981 at a morning skate/practice at the old Met Center when the Nordiques were in Minnesota for a North Stars game, I instantly became a Nords Fan. They were very cool and down to Earth. Still an Avs Fan to this day💪🏻 My best friend's dad was Carl Wetzel, a Scout for the North Stars at the time and played some Goalie in the NHL. We had an inside advantage to getting autographs and meeting players.
When he scored a goal at 84 Canada cup against Czechoslovakia while wearing Canada jersey, it was huge moment, all canadian bench cleared and came for goal celebration, and there was biggest names in hockey, it's really great moment and nice satisfaction for Peter. Meanwhile in Czechoslovakia, game commentators had tough job, because they had an order, not to mention Stastny's name, but after he scored, they had to. My father still remembers that.
The Stastny's story is truly inspirational and one of the reasons I am a hockey fan. I saw them play. It's true what they say, you never really know what you had until its gone. Stastny, Goulet, Bergie, Dale... those really were the days.
Even if they had only ever played 1 game in the nhl, their story would be an incredible one.
My favorite players (along with Yan and Paul)! thank you, Shannon. Still remember that game of 22 February 1981--Peter got 4 goals and 3 assists, Anton got 3 goals and 5 assists (Marion came over the next year).
Didn't Peter also had 8 point...? 🤔
@@SverigeiSverige Yes. 4 goals and 4 assists. 3 of the assists were on Antons goals.
Thank you for this video. I"m come from Quebec City, when I was young I saw the Stasny at the Colisé and it was magic. Every summer I went to Marian's hockeys school, he was so good and a respectful person. Lot of souvenirs, a time when players were so accessible in NHL.
The entire Stastny family are some of my favorite players, Paul Stastny was my favorite Avs player and then i learned the story of Peter, Anton and Marian. Incredible family.
It was interesting when I realized a couple years ago Joe Sakic played with Peter, Anton and Peter's son during his career
Speaking of the iron curtain, I'd recommend watching "Red Army" from 2014 . It's a good documentary about the Russian five playing in the soviet union. "The Russian Five" from 2018 is also a good documentary about how they changed the Red Wings. If there's a way to stream it I'd recommend them, Shannon.
The NHL should have that on their website for. Between the move of the Nordiques and the Red Wings entire run, you pretty much have the two greatest stories in nhl history.
The Stastny Brothers were fun to watch. If only they could have come over earlier!
Really like these history videos. I had heard of the brothers but didn't know the details at all. Fantastic careers
Great review Shannon. You are so right about young people and the Cold War. Many have no idea what it is. I was with a group of teens awhile back, watching a movie about a family who was attempting to escape from East Gremany. About 5 minutes in, we had to pause the movie so I could give them the background story. They had never heard of the Cold War. The NHL has a lot of Cold War stories including the first players from Russia. I would love to see you do a video on the players who defected from the USSR to play in the NHL. The Hockey History Guy.
Drinking game: take a shot every time Shannon thinks he made a video but didn't.
Fr tho, love you and your wife's work on this great channel
There is a book called "Breakaway" by Tal Pinchevsky of the many defections, including The Stasnys. That was the only way a player from Eastern Europe could play in North America was to defect. Risk your life and abandon everthing.
Being much older than Shannon, and the vast majority of his subscribers, I will always have fond memories of watching my Boston Bruins play the Quebec Nordiques up at Le Colisee. It seemed so far up North, cold, snowy and very French. The Stasny brothers were the most exciting and best players. Back in the 70's the Bruins always played at 7PM every Sunday night. I had good memories of watching the game at my grandfather's house, on a small T.V. w/ rabbit ears, with my uncle who loved the Bruins and especially Terry O'reilly.
17:21 The same for me …but as a Sabres fan! Oh how I loved (and hated) the Nordiques! The Battle of Quebec was epoch! Had the honor of meeting Peter (and the Mrs) at the World Championships in Moscow (2007?) - and Paul at a reception IHO Team USA. It was SO COOL to just talk hockey. A true GREAT (and a really great guy)!
Enjoyed this video. The players who defected were brave souls. Another player who defected not long after was Miroslav Frycer, who played with the Stastnys in Quebec and for several years in Toronto. He described his experiences in his book "My Wild Hockey Life."
Great topic and video, Shannon.
As far as I know Peter Stastny is the only player to represent 3 different national teams: Czechoslovakia, Canada and Slovakia.
Also when being General Manager of the Slovakian national team at the World Championsship in 2005 he would have gone up against his own son, Yan Stastny, who played for Team USA, if the teams had played each other.
One of my favourite players of all time too... Peter Stastny; and he wouldn't get the crappy xenophobic "Euro-trashed" by Don Cherry, as he was A BEAST playing the game, too. Great memories, great Nordiques teams overall in the early 80's, but due to our being in Vancouver, we just never saw enough of them on TV, which is the saddest part. 🥰
I'm not sure if you heard my request, but I'm really great full you did the history of a great line and not just a single player, I really really enjoyed the story of their careers more than just the numbers. How great lines come to be and how great lines have to end is pretty much my favorite part of hockey history.
Absolutely one of your best Shannon, well done.
The best sports story of all time! Thanks Hockey guy
The Greatest trio in hockey history
The Nordiques were my team when I was growing up. I was surrounded by Leaf and Hab fans. Never being one to succumb to the norm, Quebec became my team in the east. Oil in the west, cause Gretzky :D.
This was a great video, on e of my favorite Career videos. I like that there is a lot of context and a kind of narrative here.
In my opinion Peter was the best in the 80's I'm from Brantford Gretzky yes the Goat but Peter and his accomplishments my God amazing
I was one of the people said he never did a video of Peter stastny to me one of the most underrated player ever and think you for this video love your videos the hockey guy
Great video as always and I really love the Quebec Jersey
I hope i see the nordiques one day, they have the arena i know its just time but daym
Love this. Thanks. I’d hope they’d be more Stastny sons playing in the NHL besides Paul. Amazing talent they were.
I kinda wanna see a video where you look at when teams trade a player on a big line like the 3 brothers and the result, if the team does better or if it does worse and/or key factors to that
Great video finally, hoped that once i will see our legends on your channel. Thanks from Slovakia.
Great idea. They're so important to the history of the league. Peter was a fantastic player. Anton was very good as well.
Peter took a young Joe Sakic under his wing, and years later Joe took Peter’s son, Paul, under his.
I liked those Nordiques teams, back to their WHA days. Tardif, Cloutier, Bouchard, and a resurgent Jacques Richard made them fun to watch.
I always loved the Czechs of this era especially goalie Jiri Crha who had a rough time in Toronto and they tried to trade him back behind the iron curtain. Sensibly he moved to (then west) Germany.
YES!!! I love learning about players I wasn't alive or old enough to see!
Kind of puts in perpective, doesn't it when people say "Well Gretzky played in a higher scoring era".
Yes, and Peter was 2nd in the league 80 points behind him.
Would be nice to see more of these type of videos with multiple people.. Maybe do like iconic/dominant lines stats videos? Don't need to have their full careers, just stats during the time they played together
Anton is the youngest, born 1959.
Peter 1956
Marian 1953
+thehockeyguy Shannon not to sound like a tool but Anton stastny was the youngest you’re right on Marian He’s 3 years older than Peter born in 1953, Peter was born in 1956, Anton in 1959.
As someone who was born in late 83 I of course knew about the communist states of eastern Europe. I didn't know at the time their was such an iron curtain. All I remember is the fall of the USSR and there suddenly being new countries competing in sports. Then of course the breakup of Yugoslavia happened a few years later.
Another awesome vid here's a career video idea Tomas Kabrale I can't remember any video about him and thought it might make a cool vid.
Anyone wondering how the heck many goals the Nordiques scored in the '80s should know that there was a 4th great offensive player -- Hall-of-Famer Michel Goulet. He joined the Nordiques one year before Peter Stastny and left at the same time. In his 11 seasons with the Nordiques, Goulet had 456 G, 490 A, and 946 points. He had 4 consecutive 50-goal seasons, and scored 49 and 48 goals in the next 2 seasons.
Nice! Waiting for this. Also, a Sutter bros video would be amazing.
Another EXCELLENT career video Shannon 🏆
Unbelievable to have 3 brothers on one team. I get the sense Marian was playing the best with what he had with Toronto in that last season.
I remember Peter was saying that Marian was the better player of the three brothers, but was too old to perform at his best in the NHL, if you consider that adaptation is easier when younger. The brothers, specially Peter and Anton, were very well integrated in the Quebec City community.
Marian is the one still living in the Quebec city region. He had a golf course and an hotel for many years. He had to sell it couple years ago because he was diagnosed with Parkinson's.
Great careers! Great video!
As a Habs fan, at the time I disliked the Stastny brothers. Its years later that Ive come to appreciate them... a little. LOL
Btw "stastny" means happy in Slovak :)
Paul Stastny will needed to be added soon. The 4 Stastnys, 3 bros, 1 son.
Yeah this video would have needed wayyyyy too many little Nordiques magnets hahaha
😃
1:10 Czechs out 😋
😂
I love this channel!!
I think the consensus was the Soviet Hockey Team was the equivalent of an NHL All Star Team, so Czechoslovakia beating them is a huge deal.
Love the jersey!!! And also bring back the nordiques!!!
Freaking love that jersey. Joe Sakic fan forever
THANKS!!!
Hockey royalty
Hello 👋 Sweden 🇸🇪 here.
I think it's absolutely a travesty that they had to move the Quebeq team.
In my opinion, the more Canadian teams the better 💪💪💪
Legendary
Can we finally get the STEVE DURBANO career video?
Actually, Peter is the middle one (1956). Anton is the elder (1953) and Marian is the youngest (1959)
Yo have Marian and Anton's birth years reversed.
@@jeffpedler6094 I stand corrected
Is that the fanatics Nordiques jersey? If it is, I hate it. Can’t stand mine.
So how about a career video of PJ Axelsson?
Great video
Just for the record, i always thouught that Anton was the youngest….
And the son Paul had a decent career too.
Sadly, their name is still mangled by commentators. There is a hook over the first S so it should be pronounced "sh".
Peter was the first player to represent 3 international teams: Czechoslovakia, canada and Slovakia.
Anton was the youngest one of the three and Peter the mid one actually.
@LikeNobodii He's right, Anton is younger than Peter by three years.
@LikeNobodii Congratulations on telling people to check their sources when you dont even do it yourself. Peter was born in 56 and Anton in 59.
@LikeNobodii hey, if you cant publically humiliate yourself in youtube comments then whats the point of them, eh?
@LikeNobodii What source are you using?
@LikeNobodii wow, still wont admit you were wrong, incredible. Answer these questions. What year was Peter born? What year was Anton born? Yeah, that's right.
46+26+35=107 not 118.
Meh, still a great line.
@@TheHockeyGuy Yes sir.
