  • On the Last day of our annual team granite MTB summit weekend our legs were tired from hike a bike adventures. With about 12k of climbing on the legs in the past few days we were looking for some lift served during peak foliage to end the weekend and ended up over at loon mtb park. It was closing day, and also oktoberfest at the mountain so things were hopping. We bought and paid for our passes, hit the slops in the drizzling rain and checked just about every trail off the list. While I don't think it's quite there yet as a big destination for expert riders I think it will be soon. Why do I say that? Well I'm not the best rider in the world, but there wasn't a single feature at this bike park that I would think twice about hitting... meaning there isn't alot of expert terrain... yet. Once there is This bike park will be SO much fun. Well anyway... watch the video and let me know what you think in the comments! It's a great park to bring kids as well. My 12 year old daughter will ride there all day long and I don't have to be overly concerned with the terrain on most of the trails. The lift is a huge plus as well.

I was trying to get out there this summer. Most of the trails look pretty wide, which is nice for those that are new to downhill MTB, like the boy, and I.

I went a few times over the summer. They certainly have room for improvement, but I'm sure it'll get better as they add more features and trails. More tech trails would be nice too. Right now they all seem to be flow with some small tech features thrown in. It's definitely still under development. It was a nice change from busy Highland though.

Yeah like I said in the vid I basically found 1 run that I would go back for... hopefully they add in alot more expert terrain otherwise I can't see myself going back except for maybe with the kids. But that might be the target audience too...

The Loon park as it is right now makes more sense if you think beginner to intermediate progressing riders. It's not Highland, and I don't think they plan to make it another Highland. It's being built by the same folks potentially with a different demographic in mind. Also, it's only maybe 4 years old. I suspect a lot more is coming and things will change in the next five years at Loon.
I'd be curious what you think of the park at Stratton so far. It's about the same age (2019 start) and I'm still kinda underwhelmed but they are planning an expansion to the summit.

Sugarloaf doesn’t have any downhill trails that are regularly lift-served. Despite the rumors, it doesn’t look like they will have any in the next year or two at least. Mount Abram is definitely the up and coming downhill MTB spot in Maine.

Highland has been a large part of these trails but Loon also has a very dedicated crew working hard on this bike park 6 days a week. As for the comment on maintenance, lots of things need to be considered when building this stuff in the national forest. Lots of limitations and protocols to follow so it’s not like Highland could just come in and design an older brother of itself. Highland is a private hill, they can basically do and build whatever they want.

@@Projectnortheast their plan is on their website and they're planning to build through 2030. This year there will be a new black and another blue trail. They have big plans, but their goal is to make a park where families can ride. Has potential, but looked kinda slow. For now I'll stick with Killington, Highland and Thunder.
