Completely disagree this shouldn't be used by most people. For several years I was following all the "traditional" weight loss advice in addition to Intermittent Fasting for 15+ hours and regular exercise. My weight didn't budge. Enter Lumen. It doesn't just "guess" what my BMR is (like Weight Watchers or Noom or MyFitnessPal) but after the first few days increased my daily calorie allowance by 400. It also showed me my fasting window was stressing my system. Once I started following Lumen's recommendations, I immediately began losing weight and seeing my body composition change. Too many of us, especially postmenopausal women, are getting bad advice from dieticians and other gurus without any actual scientific fact to support their recommendations. It's a a guess. I've been an RN for over 40 years and I would recommend this as a first step for people wanting to improve their health. You can do all the traditional recommendations, but unless you know exactly how they're impacting YOUR system, it's a waste of time.
I think you may have missed the point. The point I was trying to make is that Lumen can be a wonderful tool and helps people reach health goals in a natural and healthy way. Something I prefer heavily over pills, fad diets, or other drastic measures. The reason I said it might not be for most people is because I was making the point that so many people want the quick fix. The easy pill to take, the extreme diet they do for 2 weeks, or other short-term fixes that that are probably not healthy. Options like Lumen or Levels are for people that want to actually learn what is happening to their bodies, be able to make better decisions, and improve their health through positive, healthy, natural changes. I love Lumen but it is not going to be a match for people that only want a quick no work fix and unfortunately, that is a large percentage of people Googling weight loss options.
A very important thing I learned about using the device is to tilt my head back when using the device. Otherwise any saliva I have in my mouth will end up in the device and damage it. It is accurate and does give you good direction and motivation to reduce your carb intake.
I just came across Lumen, and I am very interested this concept. I heard your video and then started to research it and found this about how it works: “If you are breathing out a high level of CO2, it means you're burning carbs but if it's a low level then that means you're burning fat instead.” I am very well versed in blood sugar/ metabolizing glucose bc my child is a type 1 diabetic who wears a continuous glucose monitor, combined with a strong background in science education. When I read that, it reminded me of ketones. Ketones go up when the body doesn’t have as many carbs to use as fuel. I also read that CO2 in breath is highly positively correlated with high glucose molarity. Therefore, the lower your blood sugar stays, the lower your number on Lumen? So why don’t we just aim for great glucose control? I can tell you my blood sugar is absolutely ideal, and I metabolize quickly. Yet at 40 now, I have gained weight even though my diet is still great, and I exercise. I’m tempted to try this just because I think it WONT help, lol. Just curious if I am missing something on how this works.
You would have to ask them to get specific on how they do things and the algorithm they use for results... but based on what you are saying, Levels might be an option you appreciate more. Check out this video in the event it works better for you: ruclips.net/video/Uz-6DzEdhqI/видео.html
Why don't we just aim for better glucose control??? Cause non-diabetics already have perfect control! We can kick out carbs when we are low and increase fast-acting insulin precisely. I have a t1d sister and two t1d kids, but my husband and I are non-diabetics. This device is not a good idea for people with metabolic issues for a reason. The CO2 science is solid, but the device accuracy is a risk, as is the interpretation of the results.
Why does everything have to access to other devices? Everything has to talk to everything else. Thanks for the review. Less than two minutes watching/reading comments & I figured out whether or not I need this.
Great review ❤ and very accurate. So many times we just buy the next thing but then are not ready or just dont use it properly or at all. Very honest and appreciated. I will wait a bit before making the purchase now
Thank you! Glad to hear you appreciated the review! It is a great product, but you need to be ready to take advantage of it and follow through with what it teaches you!
Hey Travis! I’m curious if you got the lumen before they switched to a software subscription model. I have friends who have it (and like it) and bought it back when you were “buying the device” and they can use it indefinitely without paying more $$$. Now, if you want to buy a new Lumen, you have to sign up for a “plan” which auto renews at either $249/6 months, $299/year, or one more higher priced tier. They say the device is just “included for free” with the subscription plan, but if you stop paying, you no longer get the ability to use it. I was interested in the Lumen before they went this route, but now using it is so expensive that it doesn’t really seem worth it (to me…).
Ahhhh, I overlooked that change because I did buy before they went to a subscription model and it just works. That does change things as you are tied to a hunk of money every year. Still could be worth it but you need to know you are going to stay with it and fully take advantage of it.
Ouch! That's highway robbery! I would never consider buying this with a subscription. That's one of the most annoying things companies are doing lately 🙄
@@mikeweber1302 I kind of have to agree....if they marketed the program as something you only need to do for 6 months and then you have "learned your body's habits" and don't need the device anymore then maybe I could get behind the price, but if it's something you're supposed to want to use for years (or forever)....the idea of paying up to $500 /year for it feels way to steep to be valuable
Great review! I think you forgot to add that a subscription is required to even use their service… which honestly is ridiculous. $300 for 12 months. Geeeeez
Thanks Gregg and I hear you. I think it is worth it, but I wish they offered a monthly package or maybe 3 month starter then convert to monthly. Make it real easy to turn on and off as you are using it.
I mean, for those interested in losing weight, this is a pretty standard price for subscription prices comparable or better than other weight loss subscription programs like WW or Noom... for what it's worth. I suppose the value depends on what you're trying to get out of it.
Thank you for this video. I've been reading some articles (Mashable) and checked out some other videos. Your presentation sold me on giving Lumen a try.
My pleasure! A lot of people that comment have seemed to really like the Lumen which helps believe it really a good product (not just my opinion). I hope it really works out well for you!
Big difference between sponsored and having an affiliate link. Sponsored means they pay me to make content and likely have control over what I say. This is not sponsored. I create whatever video I want and share my real thoughts. The only way I make anything is if someone uses my code or link and I very much appreciate anyone kind enough to do that.
I canceled my membership with them because they collect data from me but do not let me access my own data, this is not cool. You need to be able to access your own data, it's your right
I cyclenbetween carnivore/ketovore, so I'm not sure this will tell me much. I use the keto urine strips and I stay betweeen moderate and small ketones most of the time. Is it worth getting this device for those of us who are carnivores?
I would have to do some more in-depth research, but my gut says no. I want to say I remember something about being in true ketosis and how that affects Lumen readouts. I could be wrong, but if you on that strict of a diet, I don't think you would get as much value out of the readings.
If only greedy tech bros didn't invent the "cloud software as a service" model where everything with a computer in it is actually a leech attached to your bank account.
I am tired of all the mixed advice - this keeps you on track & eliminates the guesswork & the self sabotaging self talk that often comes after a few weeks on a new program. And often comes with expensive supplements that do very little. I’ve been using it for less than a week. I’ve dropped 6 pounds and I find it enlightening to learn how my body is processing the food in regards to fat and carbs. I’ve done keto strips years ago. you’re always worrying especially if you cheat what will happen. I think I slip up one day because I’m at a birthday party or something. I can easily get back on track and not be discouraged.
In terms of how closely a Lumen reading reflects actual CO2 excretion and fat vs. carbohydrate catabolism, it’s helpful to break this down into two parts: 1. Accuracy of Reflecting Actual CO2 Excretion: Since Lumen measures only the CO2 exhaled in your breath (without accounting for oxygen consumption), its readings likely reflect real CO2 excretion with moderate accuracy. While there aren’t many independent studies quantifying this, it’s reasonable to estimate that the device’s ability to capture changes in CO2 production is around 80-90% accurate for this limited measure. This is because exhaled CO2 is relatively easy to measure through breath analysis, though fluctuations from hydration, breathing patterns, or recent meals may affect precision. 2. Accuracy of Reflecting Fat vs. Carbohydrate Catabolism: Since Lumen doesn’t measure oxygen consumption (which is necessary for full RER calculations), its ability to determine whether you’re burning fats or carbohydrates is more of an estimate. Based on available data and company claims, the accuracy of determining fat vs. carb metabolism trends would likely be around 60-70% when compared to the more accurate methods like indirect calorimetry. Factors such as diet, hydration, and individual metabolic variation can affect this accuracy. Summary: • CO2 Excretion Accuracy: Likely 80-90% accurate in reflecting actual CO2 levels in exhaled breath. • Fat vs. Carb Metabolism Accuracy: Likely 60-70% accurate in reflecting whether you’re burning primarily fats or carbohydrates. These percentages represent reasonable estimates based on the limitations of breath-only analysis without the full respiratory exchange data.
I really like that Lumen gives people an option that tracks and teaches health so you can learn how to to be better without breaking the bank. That being said, it you are okay with spending more money, I love the CGM options. The data is much more my style and how it pairs against your activities to let you see a direct result is very beneficial. Right now, Levels is my go to, but there are multiple quality options out there. ruclips.net/video/Uz-6DzEdhqI/видео.html
Have been using this product for almost one year and have lost 5 lbs. Originally, I lost about 10 but gained back 5. I have also used intermittent fasting. I don't drink soda and rarely fast food. Tracking food was tedious, and there is no suggestion as to how much you should eat. Some of their suggested foods list were weird and most of the snacks I wouldn't eat. I wish they had a PC app. Most of the time I have been had 2s but still no additional weight loss. Yesterday went to Outback, had the bread, salad, Alice Springs Chicken, sweet potato and iced tea. This morning had a 2. But I can eat a salad with chicken for dinner and end up with a 3 or 4. Flexibility score was up and yet I had one bad meal and for a week my score dropped even though I returned to what I was eating previously. Makes no sense. I did lose some fat but it is not reflected on the scale. I don't understand it. My year is up, and they want $35/month to continue, which is way too much, so I canceled.
The score part is odd and makes me wonder how accurate it can be sometimes. Generally it seemed to match what I "expected" but not always. Also, keep in mind that "burning fat" does not necessarily mean fat from your body. It means fat as a fuel source. If you are doing a proper low-carb diet and your body is efficient at burning fat for fuel, but you are still ingesting enough calories where the body does not have to use "reserves" it is going to be hard to lose weight. It sounds like you are very much on the right track but may need to reduce overall calories a bit. Also, make sure you are getting exercise, hydration, and nutrition. Good luck! I know it can be frustrating.
I believe I bought mine far enough back that it came with a permanent subscription. I am not sure exactly what happens without subscription, but I believe it stops letting you take measurements altogether. If you do decide to get this, I would factor in the subscription as I don't think it is much without it.
First of all, you explained it best. I watched a few others and they didn’t. Question: Does it also tell you when best to workout? Might sound like a silly question. Like if your body burns fat more in the morning, so you should workout then versus any other time if the day?
Thank you so much (and sorry for taking a little while to reply)! I don't believe it is directly tied in as far as telling you recommend exercise types or times relative to what it has learned. It does have resources and videos that help you learn and get a better idea of what may be best for you. So, you can learn and get more knowledge but no, not a direct tie that I remember. Hope that helps!
So is the point of the lumen to get to a fat burn for energy state? You mentioned a few times that good scores were 2s and 1s which are the fat for energy numbers. Why is a 4 or 5 bad?
Sorry, I guess I was applying my objective to the score. The point is to better understand where you are at and if the results match your expectations. If you want to lose weight and "think" you are burning fat, but really don't know. You might get the Lumen and it tells you a score of 3, 4, or 5 and you realize you have more work to do. You can then continue to make changes, measure and work towards what you really want. If your goal is to be balanced or more carb dependent, you could use it that way as well. Hope that makes sense.
If you want to deal with horrific slow to respond or non-responsive customer service with a defective device right out of the box, then purchase Lumen! After doing all the troubleshooting in the manual, and the recommended repeated suggestions from their email support (yes, they only respond when they feel like it during EST timezone via email only) the device still will not turn on. Even after allowing it to charge overnight 24 hours, and switching USB ports, adn ensuring they are plugged into a 5v port.. nothing! This was a royal waste of time and money. Please make sure you have customer service that is adequate prior to releasing a device that is obviously not effective and cheap!
Gives misleading lumen levels when in keto. “Ketosis makes it difficult to take useful measurements. When your metabolism runs on ketones it produces more CO2 than burning fat, giving you misleading Lumen Levels.” From the Lumen app. Would have been useful information for me since I’m in keto often.
It sort of ties into that, so if you are getting 1 scores constantly, there is a good chance you are in keto. But to he honest, it is not directly testing that and there are probably a better methods.
There are urine strips which are cost effective but I have heard accuracy is questionable for testing this. I believe the best is blood tests but I am not familiar with what options are out there. I will try to do a little research.
U can get a blood glucose reader that will test your blood ketones for ketosis. If you are looking to find the most acurate way. There are a ton of those videos on youtube if u want to find the best one.
Is there a way to take random measurements throughout the day. That would be real hacking. To track, independently from app, pattern of what I eat vs CO2. I just purchased one but I cant get an answer.
You can take as many measurements as you want! You can choose from categories after wake, before meal, after exercise, etc. but they also have custom check in for anytime you feel like taking a measurement.
Lumen can help you learn more about overall health and what your body is burning in terms of fat vs carbs. This is more gears towards overall wellness and weight loss though. I don't know if it would be the best match for you.
link.learnwithtravis.com/Lumen - 349 for the year. This includes the membership and device. Code "LEARNWITHT" adds a couple months free to improve the deal. It is a hunk of money, but you can also learn so so much in a year.
This morning my dog (Elvis) told me that if I want to continuue to pet him, I will now have to pay monthly. $9.95, but only $99.00 annually. The greed of these companies with their subscriptions is not to be believed. Will they also want a tip, when I set up my Lumen subscription?
Subscription based. Imagine if our Washing machine, treadmill or lawn mower requires a subscription to simply work. At the least, display read outs. Maybe the data tracking Or data insight is at a cost.
I kind of disagree. I’ve done healthy vegetarian with very little fats for six months and lost hardly any thing. The initial read out showed me my metabolism is not performing well on a vegetarian diet. Too much grains and fruit sugars. I would not know this without Lumen. My first day I dropped scores. Have a ways to go to get to a 1 or 2.
Not sure what part you disagree with, but I completely agree that Lumen can be a great way to learn what is and is not working for you. That is the whole idea, learn what works for you. Listen to Lumen, but honestly, I would try to get more health fats in. Olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, and things like that. You probably get plenty of fiber but that is a good thing. Managing portion sizes of the higher carb fruits and maybe intermittent fasting. Plenty of things to try and see how your body responds!
You need fat and protein so you cannot go complete carbs. Being carb dependent can be really tough, but maybe if you do it right. You would need a lot of complex carbs that digest slowly. You don't want to be constantly spiking your blood glucose or becoming insulin resistant. Having a lot of carbs constantly can have other negative effects on the body so you need to be careful.
Finally a real unbias review about a device or whatever and not a marketing gimick! Thanks Travis, nice video review. Wait a minute what am I doing here? 🤣😔😔😔😔
@@Learnwithtravis he is right, money rules the world and we are full of useless garbage just to make someone rich, and at the meantime we just kill the planet with plastic
@@Learnwithtravis by the way, he didn't say you were a liar, just so we wouldn't trust such a review but your reaction shows what your mentality is like
I would like to have this, and the money is not the problem per se, but the fact you have to have it, the subscription, is. But here's my thought. If you know about BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL, meaning what you should eat and not eat (Frosted cake versus broccoli), then wouldn't you know if your body is burning fat versus carbs? And honestly, if you use a 20-dollar glucometer, which is a bit inconvenient, but you know if you have a lot of sugar in the blood, and if you do, go work out, take a walk, etc... Do something physical to burn it off. What I am saying is, do I need a 300-dollar device to tell me what I already know I should or should not be doing? I can eat something to spike my sugar, say 130. If I go for a 2-mile hike and then take it, my sugar is DRAMATICALLY lower. So if you have high blood sugar, you are probably burning carbs, and if you don't, you are probably burning fat?
All good points. If you go full health... meaning only healthy ingredients, super low carbs, get your exercise, then I agree and you can probably make safe assumptions or get what you need out of less expensive options. I think the problem is that most people struggle to have their diet and exercise that on-point. There are also other factors that come in to play. For example, you eat really healthy and get your exercise... you can assume you are burning fat as no carbs are available. But what if you had a really high carb day prior. Your body stores the glucose and releases it later. Meaning, you may have a great health day and still have a surplus of glucose available that takes days to burn before you are in a fat burning state. Options like this help you learn about that balance and what it takes to get your body in condition you want as everyone is different and this gives you real results. Not shooting down either option because what you described is a great option as well. You sound like you might like data more like I do, which for me, creates more of an appreciation for options like Levels. You may want to check it out. ruclips.net/video/WKzmXeIal6M/видео.html
No. Lumen is a representation of all your decisions and how you body functions. This means items like sleep quality, hydration, food choices, portion sizes, timing of meals, exercise, and more. It sort of depends on how deep you want to go but I would not say you have to weigh your food. It is an option if you want to get very specific.
Complete scam that you pay $300 for the device and then have to pay for a subscription. I bought mine less than a month prior to July 30, 2023 and hence can no longer even take basic metabolic measurements unless I pay a $90 fee and a monthly subscription! This is definitely a terrible customer experience. I would NEVER recommend this device and plan!
Lumen is a great idea but it was not executed well regarding the design of the app, primarily. The app is necessary and it does req a pay subscription. The app is too time consuming and lacks user friendly features! You have to log foods and activities manually and even saving a recipe seems impossible. Using the macros has a steep learning curve. It is this poor design that results in eating more processed foods because they are easiest to log. Overall, the app is too complicated and time consuming to use consistently.
Honestly, I’m disappointed. I was hoping it would tell me my metabolic rate. What am I supposed to take from this 1-5 scale? “Yea you dieted” is about all I get. But I already know that because it’s all the time. I was hoping to have some reference for my caloric expenditure, like real metabolism trackers. I would return it if I could.
Yeah, that was my big negative as well. I wish the feedback was much granular and trended or tied in your activities better. It is from a different angle but Levels provides a much more detailed view if that might be of interest.
I always instinctively walk away from subscription models. It's served me thus far and will continue to do so. Screw these greedy entrepreneurs. What's the matter? My two hundred bucks are not good enough for you??
Well I was going to buy one but now thar I have learned you need a subscrition...NO THANKS. Too bad cause I wazzz onboard. Don't need another subscription.
This device should be standard when visiting a doctor . It’s all guess work and prescription drugs. Blood tests for allergens and devices like this is what every person struggling with health should have free or at a low cost. Prices are too high for the average person.
That is another route you can go. I have heard those are not the most accurate but have not done a ton of research. Also, Lumen is not about only ketosis or not. It is about what you are burning and getting where you want. This can mean burning fat without full blown ketosis. Also, the Lumen app has a lot of other helpful tool to help you. So, a test strip tests for one thing while Lumen is helping in many ways.
I get where you are going but I would argue people can still great an honest opinion piece with a affiliate link. Is that always the case? Nope. But the statement that discount link make it a certainty that the review is unbiased... I don't believe that either.
That could be part of it, but the subscription provides a lot of features over just a device that takes a measurement. And those features cost many to make available.
What's missing: Science explanations and recitation of those resources showing the science. Explanation of all fees to have and use the service and device. Can asthmatics and other health conditions detour results from being accurate? Privacy concerns of using device and service? I see too many questions and not enough in-depth investigation and explanations. If one does not know answers to these questions, how can one ACTUALLY review it with legitimacy? So far, it's a pass until I'm told more.
I hear where you are coming from, but an alternative view... If you look at all the stuff I have reviewed with the goal of helping people decide if that is a good option for them or not, all those products would have cost 10s of thousands of dollars. There is no way I can afford that on my own. But if a company reaches out and says, "we will send this to you and you can say whatever you want. Make an honest review." This allows me to make more reviews. Review more products. Maybe make a few bucks so I can purchase some products on my own to review. Obviously, you cannot trust every creator because some will say anything for free stuff. But some, are just trying to make sure this works and help people out with honest reviews.
I hate that it’s like… $500 CAD with the current holiday discount offered AND an additional 15% off coupon code… THEN to get extra advice you need to pay an additional $43 CAD / month. A whopping $516 annually. I mean it’s not as expensive as ozempic but damn Y’all.
So, this is just from some quick googling, but another way to look at it. Average monthly cost of personal trainer: 250 - 400 USD Nutritionist - 70 to 100 USD per Hour Think about how much those costs can add up. Then add on the features you get from the technology and how you can use that knowledge. The food and calorie tracking. The historical information and advice. This is your health and I don't know if Lumen is or is not the way for you, but thinking long-term.... Spread out over the course of the year, if you feel better, extend your life, get more enjoyment out of each day, have more energy and so on, is that really that big of a cost? I am not trying to sell Lumen, but get away from mindset that investing in our health is a waste of money.
These criticisms are "petty" to put it mildly. Most people will absolutely benefit from this device because it makes caloric intake and tracking "easy". It uses your body’s physiology to track the changes, rather than requiring someone to manually write everything down. Your logic is backwards. People who are uneducated about health and fitness will benefit “the most” from an educational and automatic tracking device such as this one. Another review by man on "Fitness and Finance" stated the opposite, since he was already extremely educated on health and fitness, he didn’t see the device as necessary and therefore not useful to “most people”. I've been researching this product extensively and it's very disappointing but also revealing to note how critical men on these reviews are of a female created product versus the reviews given by women. This is regardless of how educated in health and fitness these women are. Is there a correlation? Maybe not - but I'd bet money that unconscious and conscious bias plays a major factor here.
If I only say positive things people say I am not objective and paid to say what I say. If I point out areas of improvement on a product I like, people think I am attacking it and call me petty. Truth is, I agree with most things you say. It is a great tool to educate people on how to live healthy. Something many people don’t have a lot of knowledge in. It is more more than the product itself but everything you can learn through the app. I really like Lumen for a lot of people. Just not everyone.
@@Learnwithtravis This comment wasn’t made because you made a negative or average review of a product. This comment was made because your critiques are petty and your logic is not sound. For instance, breaking a scale down between one and two or four and five would be tedious and unnecessary.
My logic for that was if you get a score of a 2.... is that close to a 3 and you are burning both or really close to a 1 and burning mostly fat? Who knows. I would love a little more granularity to help me understand better where I am at. Just my opinion, and something I hope they consider as an area of improvement. Surprised me a bit that you would think of that as petty, tedious, or unnecessary but I respect your opinion.
When the guy making a review leaves a referral link then messes with the natural ranking of comments by replying to select ones, it's safe to say this is just an ad and the product is probably shit
LOL - I get why you think that but not sus. People that create videos and post to RUclips have no control over what advertisements are placed on their videos. We just create content.
What is it with these constant Have a great day’ messages?? I found it so distracting in this review, as it’s the typical phrase that we, as the people outside the American ‘world’ hear the stereotype American say, without an ounce of sincerity! Saying that, I did get that the Lumen isn’t for everyone, thanks!
I was playing with different transitions from topic to topic so it does not get visually boring. I think this is one of the few videos I did this with but I get your point. You are not right about it being without sincerity but I can see where it was overused.
This is kinda silly. This is like having an alcohol breathalyzer. After a while you damn well know how much booze you had. Basically this is a device to tell you when you're low on glycogen stores and burning stored fat. Well you might aswell just do keto than
DON’T BUT THIS PRODUCT - Warning their return policy is not existent if you have even opened the box. If you’re not happy with the readings, too bad. If you have a medical condition (like myself) and cannot get enough breath to complete a reading, too bad. They wont take it back. Again, If you have even opened the box but never used it they wont take it back, No refunds. My readings (when I could even complete a full breath 1 time out of every 6th try) were all over the place. Not accurate and their “studies” are done in house with plenty of bias.
If you could buy a $75 device that hooked to your toilet bowl and synced with a smartphone app that would do this very thing, would you be interested? I probably would.
Do you pay for the device itself or once your subscription ends, you have to send the device back ?
I don’t think so. The initial payment includes so many months and the device. After that there is a monthly fee to use the services.
Do you work for the company? Their support is awful!
No, and I have not had to reach out to support so I didn’t have any data on that.
Awesome review. I almost purchased this and then found your review, but then noticed the comments on the subscription model.
Thank you so much Craig! Glad to hear you were able to make the right decision for you!
Yup. They jumped the shark with the subscription model.
These companies always get greedy.
A very important thing I learned about using the device is to tilt my head back when using the device. Otherwise any saliva I have in my mouth will end up in the device and damage it. It is accurate and does give you good direction and motivation to reduce your carb intake.
Good point. I must have been doing g this without thinking about it because I never had issues.
supposed to blow into it, not eat it

I am glad you figured out what is best for you!
I’d get this if they didnt have a scammy subscription model.
Same here, not signing up for a subscription.
Recommended by Dr. Fung. Bought immediately for $200 subscription. After you learn what you need to do for health, 6 month is long enough.
That is what I love about these products so much. You can learn so much and use that for the rest of your life.
Great review ❤ and very accurate. So many times we just buy the next thing but then are not ready or just dont use it properly or at all. Very honest and appreciated. I will wait a bit before making the purchase now

Great video. Very helpful
Thanks you!
As soon as I saw they were using a subscription model I immediately pressed the back button.
Wouldn't even consider paying those ridiculous prices.
@@Learnwithtravis I have been trying to find when these has moved to a subscription service, but no info online. Is yours a V2 or later?
Brilliant review 😎. Thank you
My pleasure and thank you so much!!!
I pay my traditional nutritionist 80$/month. 300$/year sounds like a deal.
Thanks for that .. TOO MUCH MONEY
Not for everyone but considering the impact it can have on your health and how you feel everyday… it can be very worth it for some.
@LearnWithTravis, I'll give you an update in a few months!
Excellent point. I completely agree with the points you made. Who should be using it, changing the scale to give more precise feedback, etc.
Thank you! I am still hoping they do it!
Well said Travis. Very good advise, and I'm practicing all these things already, so the Lumen would not add anything to my health and fitness plan.
Thank you and glad to hear you are on top of your health and wellness!
Always wanted to try this! Thanks for taking one for the team! Great review as always my man!
My pleasure Mike! Thank you so much and if you do get one, I hope you really enjoy it!
Pretty sure he's sponsored by them. He has a discount code in the description. That means kickbacks
You need to be able to access your own data, it's your right
What data are you hoping to get that is not available in the app?
That's all I needed to hear/read.
Hi! I love my lumen! How do you clean this thing? Can i submerge it? Pull it apart? Wipe it? Please help!
I would ask them but don't pull it apart or submerge it. I think you use a gentle wipe on the outside and that is all you need.
Decimalisation would be better for sure.
I have ordered this and will be interesting to see what it says.
Hope you enjoy it!
Just got a Lumen. Very good review and suggestions for improvement.
Thank you! They actually implemented that improvement so it is very solid product now! Hope it works out great for you!
Great review, funny how all the ads were for the Lumen Breath Analyzer. 😉
Haha, thank you! I promise I have no control over which ads are placed over my video.
Do you need a smart pone to use it?
Yeah, because the app collects the data and presents it to you.
Great info! Thanks!
Great to hear! Thank you so much!
Loved your honesty and info you shared! thank you

How do I know if the Lumen pairs with my Coros smart watch?
Probably reach out to their support. I have no way to test that one...

Yeah 479 for having the device for 12 months then having to renew the subscription, sounds pretty scammy to me
The subscription is absolute theft…. There no way in hell I’m paying for a sub after I buy the damn device.
Bingo
We didn’t get the service other.
If only greedy tech bros didn't invent the "cloud software as a service" model where everything with a computer in it is actually a leech attached to your bank account.
You wouldn't pay for a sub, but would pay for a personal nutritionist, which the plan effectively functions as.
@@digiwatt that's not how that works lol You can't buy a person
I am tired of all the mixed advice - this keeps you on track & eliminates the guesswork & the self sabotaging self talk that often comes after a few weeks on a new program. And often comes with expensive supplements that do very little. I’ve been using it for less than a week. I’ve dropped 6 pounds and I find it enlightening to learn how my body is processing the food in regards to fat and carbs. I’ve done keto strips years ago. you’re always worrying especially if you cheat what will happen. I think I slip up one day because I’m at a birthday party or something. I can easily get back on track and not be discouraged.
Great feedback and so glad it is working so well for you!
Thanks for the review very helpful
Great to hear! Thank you so much!
Good advice! Thank you.

In terms of how closely a Lumen reading reflects actual CO2 excretion and fat vs. carbohydrate catabolism, it’s helpful to break this down into two parts:
1. Accuracy of Reflecting Actual CO2 Excretion:
Since Lumen measures only the CO2 exhaled in your breath (without accounting for oxygen consumption), its readings likely reflect real CO2 excretion with moderate accuracy.
Carbohydrate Catabolism:
Since Lumen doesn’t measure oxygen consumption (which is necessary for full RER calculations), its ability to determine whether you’re burning fats or carbohydrates is more of an estimate. Based on available data and company claims, the accuracy of determining fat vs. carb metabolism trends would likely be around 60-70% when compared to the more accurate methods like indirect calorimetry. Factors such as diet, hydration, and individual metabolic variation can affect this accuracy.
Summary:
• CO2 Excretion Accuracy: Likely 80-90% accurate in reflecting actual CO2 levels in exhaled breath.
• Fat vs. Carb Metabolism Accuracy: Likely 60-70% accurate in reflecting whether you’re burning primarily fats or carbohydrates.
These percentages represent reasonable estimates based on the limitations of breath-only analysis without the full respiratory exchange data.
Thanks for this review. I appreciate it.
My pleasure! Thank you!

I wonder if a CGM is a better option
I really like that Lumen gives people an option that tracks and teaches health so you can learn how to to be better without breaking the bank. That being said, it you are okay with spending more money, I love the CGM options. The data is much more my style and how it pairs against your activities to let you see a direct result is very beneficial. Right now, Levels is my go to, but there are multiple quality options out there. ruclips.net/video/Uz-6DzEdhqI/видео.html
Travis I agree with you on this. Thanks for making this video.
My pleasure! I love solutions that teach people how to be healthier. There is a lot to it and always nice to learn some tips and tricks.
Great review! Thank you. I thought you made all great points.
Thank you Maria! Very much appreciate it!
One more question, if you stop the subscription is the reading less accurate?
I believe I bought mine far enough back that it came with a permanent subscription. I am not sure exactly what happens without subscription, but I believe it stops letting you take measurements altogether. If you do decide to get this, I would factor in the subscription as I don't think it is much without it.
@@Learnwithtravis Thank you
First of all, you explained it best.
Hope that makes sense.
perfect review for me. I don't need to lose weight, want it for tweaking diet for athletic performance. Sound good! thanks
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much Cyndy and best of luck in reaching your wellness goals!
Thanks for sharing. I have not done keto while testing Lumen so did not cover that or my experience, but good point.
@@idontwantahandle567 good to know so just take blood tests to confirm
Ketosis is fat burning though
QUESTION: since it tells you what kind of fuel youre using, does it mean it tells you when youre in keto using ketones as fuel?
It sort of ties into that, so if you are getting 1 scores constantly, there is a good chance you are in keto. But to he honest, it is not directly testing that and there are probably a better methods.
@@Learnwithtravis what are better methods to be sure you're in ketosis?
There are urine strips which are cost effective but I have heard accuracy is questionable for testing this. I believe the best is blood tests but I am not familiar with what options are out there. I will try to do a little research.
U can get a blood glucose reader that will test your blood ketones for ketosis. If you are looking to find the most acurate way. There are a ton of those videos on youtube if u want to find the best one.

@@Learnwithtravis I never know for sure when I'm in ketosis, so I'm guessing this would take the guesswork out!
Better to get a Keto Mojo meter. Less expensive and no high subscription fees to use the product.
Trying to gain weight but want to find out what foods work well for my body. Can lumen assess this?
Lumen can help you learn more about overall health and what your body is burning in terms of fat vs carbs. This is more gears towards overall wellness and weight loss though. I don't know if it would be the best match for you.
So this helps you stay away from carbs? I want the exact opposite. Still, pretty neat device.
Sort of, and that is how a lot of people use but so you know what your body is using for fuel in the event you want to change that.

Stay tuned. Lol
Cost! I wanted to hear your thoughts on the value for the high price! Otherwise it was an informative video.
I am close to completing a video of a like product. Maybe after that I can create a comparison video where I talk about costs!
Good review
Thanks Tory!
Why not be carb dependent? As long as you don't eat too many calories.

@@Learnwithtravis by the way, he didn't say you were a liar, just so we wouldn't trust such a review
but your reaction shows what your mentality is like
I would like to have this, and the money is not the problem per se, but the fact you have to have it, the subscription, is.
For Lumen to really work do you have to weigh your food
Thank you!
Glad to help!
Good feedback and hopefully they see this. Always room for improvement and ideally, the product only continues to improve.
@@insomniacdesigns don’t log food, just be aware that what you ate the night before had you burning carbs or fat in the morning. The rest is easy.
I think it's a scam. How can co2 percentage tells you what's the source of that co2. And their website doesn't explains how it supposed to work.
Have a great day!
You too!
Well I was going to buy one but now thar I have learned you need a subscrition...NO THANKS. Too bad cause I wazzz onboard. Don't need another subscription.
Yeah, the subscription model does seem to be turning a lot of people away.
This device should be standard when visiting a doctor . It’s all guess work and prescription drugs. Blood tests for allergens and devices like this is what every person struggling with health should have free or at a low cost. Prices are too high for the average person.
Agree. I would love to see doctors suggest products like this to improve core health practices over going directly to a drug.
I am on my 2nd day of lumen. It doesn’t seem to be very user friendly.
why not just use keto test strips to measure ketones?
That is another route you can go. I have heard those are not the most accurate but have not done a ton of research. Also, Lumen is not about only ketosis or not. It is about what you are burning and getting where you want. This can mean burning fat without full blown ketosis. Also, the Lumen app has a lot of other helpful tool to help you. So, a test strip tests for one thing while Lumen is helping in many ways.
You have a discount link… meaning your review is not unbiased
I get where you are going but I would argue people can still great an honest opinion piece with a affiliate link. Is that always the case? Nope. But the statement that discount link make it a certainty that the review is unbiased... I don't believe that either.
@@Learnwithtravis I can't find a RUclips "reivew" of this product without an affiliate link in the notes. Makes the product smell a bit fishy.

They made it subscription based because they don’t want people sharing the device once they no longer need it, which seems inevitable.
That could be part of it, but the subscription provides a lot of features over just a device that takes a measurement. And those features cost many to make available.
Any “review” with a product link 🔗 is totally suspect.
Agree. You need to be very careful out there, take multiple opinions in, and really think about if you trust the content creator.

Before I watch any videos on RUclips now I think it's an advertisement....
"This was sent to me for free by x company ... But .." 🙄
I hear where you are coming from, but an alternative view...
The return policy is horrible also.
Average monthly cost of personal trainer: 250 - 400 USD
Nutritionist - 70 to 100 USD per Hour
Think about how much those costs can add up.
Do you need anything that you need to rebuy?
Not sure I understand the question, but lumen on the subscription is all your should need.
@Learnwithtravis like filter or some thing that needs to be replaced every now and then
@kersyitalian oh, nope. I am still using the same unit I got a long time ago!
@Learnwithtravis ok ty for your answer
I returned lumen. It is BS. Several women I know followed the advice and gained a lot of weight.
When the guy making a review leaves a referral link then messes with the natural ranking of comments by replying to select ones, it's safe to say this is just an ad and the product is probably shit
LOL - I reply to almost all comments!
Wow, an advert came up for Lumen whilst watching this review. Pretty sus.
LOL - I get why you think that but not sus. People that create videos and post to RUclips have no control over what advertisements are placed on their videos. We just create content.
Have a great day 🤔😑
What is it with these constant Have a great day’ messages?? I found it so distracting in this review, as it’s the typical phrase that we, as the people outside the American ‘world’ hear the stereotype American say, without an ounce of sincerity! Saying that, I did get that the Lumen isn’t for everyone, thanks!
I was playing with different transitions from topic to topic so it does not get visually boring. I think this is one of the few videos I did this with but I get your point. You are not right about it being without sincerity but I can see where it was overused.
This definitely isn't for me, I'm not willing to give up my carbs. Lol
Haha, yeah... might not be a match.
Sounds like a scam to me.
Why do the comments look like a college discussion board lmaoo
This is kinda silly. This is like having an alcohol breathalyzer. After a while you damn well know how much booze you had. Basically this is a device to tell you when you're low on glycogen stores and burning stored fat. Well you might aswell just do keto than
“Traditional recommendations are a waste of time.” This from an RN. Hope you’re never my nurse.
Was that directed at me because I don’t remember calling anything a waste of time.
No, a response to another commenter. I thought your review was balanced and helpful.
@@TrossOfTheAlba Okay, Thanks!
Not accurate and their “studies” are done in house with plenty of bias.
next up is pee and poop analyser
So true. LOL
I think next up is implantable data collectors…body 2.0 -
It sounds silly but I imagine it is just a matter of time.
@@Learnwithtravis some diseases I'm sure one can see in the pee. Some say cancer forexample
If you could buy a $75 device that hooked to your toilet bowl and synced with a smartphone app that would do this very thing, would you be interested? I probably would.
