Allen is such an underrated player.. on top of being the single kindest person on earth..GIT 92-93 One of the people that really opened my eyes while I was there.. great great teacher.. Thank you sir
Had to post here...I come from a family of professional musicians...I must give respect where respect is due...No matter what he engages in...it has a bit of "seduction", encouragement and confidence in it, it beckons exploration and enthusiastic interest... and....The way Hinds plays, no matter which genre he is embracing at the time, just makes your soul "happy"...such a gifted guitarists!! Thanks for the post...this guy is an asset to any artist he collaborates/performs with..just takes it up a notch or several!! Ha Ha..go Hinds!!They say Preach brotha...preach..to this vid..I say...teach brotha teach... Best to you out there who strive to give us the songs!!
One of the best demos on legato I've heard in some time. Good tone, well explained, guitar isn't pulled up to your neck, and not a lot of chatter. Thanks!
I remember when Allen Hinds replaced Ted Hall of the Fents back in the eighties, after Ted fell and broke his arm. He was producing Hiroshima but came and did the Fents gigs with Adam Holzman and the then current bass and drum players. He didn't fall right in but did another two or three gigs before he bailed to do Hiroshima and his own amazing thing.
@musiciansinstitute What are the requirements to study jazz guitar in GIT? Do you have to be able to play jazz before coming to GIT or you learn when you go there? If you have to know how to play jazz, in what level should i know it? Thanks!
@musiciansinstitute My 13-year-old son, who started playing a year ago and is now transcribing Hendrix tunes (!), DREAMS of going to GIT. Absent financial aid of some kind, there is no way this would ever happen. Could you direct me to some info about the aid programs available? A geologic era ago, when I was an aspiring session player, GIT was my dream, too. I'd love to make it come true for my son.
@MaurofdVzla We understand. This is why we have scholarships and financial aid available for aspiring students. You can always consider that window of opportunity. :)
what delay timing is the best for that thing shown(exercise) and do you set it manually to a metronomes ticking, so it blends and smooths out the legato and will a noise gate help and how dry is the reverb, and type. I've got that very same amp tone out of my line6 helix and the Les paul studio, but alas the guitar'its not set up for Holdsworth-ian legato flurrys..yeah that amp tone is nice it was hidden away only came across it by a lucky chance. as I favour clean-ish rhythmic full tones that's a sound I like. that early 50's tone with those hidden sonic harmonic undertones that bites the hand that feeds it that cuts through even at low volumes.. how I do miss my old 30w bassman head an cab lost for 30 odd yrs. it was a sonic beasty aye just a bit of digging in and wow
i just learned that actually, from a guthrie video, i noticed it helps with endurance and finger strength as well. just checked out your channel as well, great riffing!
I get you need left hand strength and control but how important is having low action on your guitar? do you need super low action or can it be done with just average action?
Low action helps, but too low of action actually makes it difficult to do cleanly...the first finger must mute both strings adjacent to the string being played...if strings are too low you'll end up barring the next higher (thinner string). So low action, but still high enough to avoid this inadvertent barring.
Man, if this guy stopped using pull offs and used only hammer ons, he would be completely like Holdsworth. I love that tone. It sounds like a tube amp.
that doesnt mean he doesnt sound like him or vice versa. The eric johnson/bonamassa mannerisms. EJ and bonamassa sound similar. Both in tone and left hand. bends as well
Yes, kind of. But find some basic videos here on youtube. Fx Justin Sandercoe - he has really good lessons. He calls it flick offs, though, but it is the same technique. Search for legato Justin Sandercoe.
you want to pluck the string with your left hand while pulling off, instead of just taking your finger off the string, pluck it decently hard in a downwards motion. good pull off's are key in making your legato sound bubbly like a saxophone.
@Hydrefyricon (Decent amount of Dist + Bridge pickup selector + Zero treble on the Amp)... tweak along this setting, and you might like what you hear : )
@musiciansinstitute I have the same problem, if I could get a student loan, it;d be a different story, but the fee cost is prohibitive. I also live in the UK so if I earn money here, it would mean doing about 3-4 years work because of the lousy exchange rate, if I earned the money in america, I wouldnt get anywhere because of the awful minimum wage. Because they raised cost of degrees in UK, I'm prob gonna study in australia instead.
Distortion can be a deathtrap. You can manage it if your goal is to get a sustained and sweet- smooth tone. If you over do it, it won't sound as pretty as this guy's.
Thank you, but as you said, its hard to explain, cuz i didn't understand a word you said lol. Thank you very much for replying and trying to explain it. sounds to me like you could make a better explanation video.
I have to ask, since i really didn't understand Marshall in his video, what really is the legato he is trying to explain? i don't understand how you can have legato with no pull off's, as he stated in his video. he went way too fast in my opinion in his explanation.
Allen Hinds sounds like Holdsworth with a blues/rock harmonic sense. Killer player...such an amazing touch.
Allen is such an underrated player.. on top of being the single kindest person on earth..GIT 92-93 One of the people that really opened my eyes while I was there.. great great teacher..

The actual exercise is from 2:10-3:12
It sounds like Chris Poland! Allen is a great guitar player same as Poland.
Great teacher & very humble person!. Really Miss MI!!.
beautiful beautiful subtle style of playing and LOVING the phrasing style...I Would An Album From This Guy Anyday
Allen should be wearing a cape. He's a super-hero guitar god!
Smooth playing and perfect Tone.. LUv this guys work!
He's got some smooth legato with a tone reminiscent of Eric Johnson.
yes he do
Sounded more Brett Garsed-ish imo
One of my fave teachers from M.I. .....great musician!!!
love how he phrases with that extensive use of legato
Very nice. Allan Holdsworth does it better than everyone, but it's always cool to hear that tone and those particular licks.
One of the best demos on legato I've heard in some time. Good tone, well explained, guitar isn't pulled up to your neck, and not a lot of chatter. Thanks!
I thought the name of the video was alien hands lmao. love this technique, eager to sit down and start playing with it once I know some patterns.
Yeah, me too haha
legato is just playing without picking/ or with limited picking. The notes are not that important to the style, but knowing your scales is.
I always dreamed to graduate the Musician Institute since 1993 ...
Adam went on to work with Chaka Khan, Wayne Shorter, and Miles Davis. Now he is with Steven Wilson and they sound as good as any band can.
HOLY SHIT, THE TONE!, THE NOTES, JIZZ!
Very tasty playing. Nice to use the legato stuff for more than just flamethrower shred.
He used to use Xotic AC and EP boosts to get that tone, some compression too. SMooth!!!!
He's one of my top guitar players.
@musiciansinstitute What are the requirements to study jazz guitar in GIT? Do you have to be able to play jazz before coming to GIT or you learn when you go there? If you have to know how to play jazz, in what level should i know it? Thanks!
You're an excellent teacher!
Great Learning Session!
Is Allan Holdsworth but more diatonic
And with bends
And pull-offs
postlove that was a myth, Allan does pull offs
Blaine Mendez no, pull offs are bad.
Kirk Wahmmet why? What’s the difference between pull offs and “lift offs”
Thanks for this great clip MI !! This is the first time I've heard/seen
Allen Hinds...OMG!!!
Using the 4 notes per string approach is golden if you want to use legato to the fullest!
WOW....MAN....THAt's quite a mix...!!!!!!!!
Sweet relaxed vibrato.
hey briliant video! what type is this les paul? like a 58 / just a standerd?cheerz
You're tone kind of reminds me of Chris Polands tone. And that's a monster tone!
Such a cool style - great player!
Great playing and tone... lovely

Are your strings set very close to the neck for this style... like MUCH lower than normal? Thanks. Great lesson. Thanks.
@MaurofdVzla We understand. This is why we have scholarships and financial aid available for aspiring students. You can always consider that window of opportunity. :)
His Tone🙆♂️🤘!
Killer tone and phrasing.

Awesome!

Dorian sounds so good
A MH fan boy perhaps? Hinds is one of a few that play with a true legato feel and technique.
oh god, this guy ahs angel tone.
that doesnt mean he doesnt sound like him or vice versa. The eric johnson/bonamassa mannerisms. EJ and bonamassa sound similar. Both in tone and left hand. bends as well
He's using the notes of E Dorian, the same scale he uses during the backing track in the whole video.
Monster player...thanks for sharing!
Damn that's some good ass tone.
Check out Allen's playing with Gino Vanelli - what a beast...
Аlen only use pick here, no finger picking? Nice playing, great sound, back track?
@musiciansinstitute How much can the scholarship pay for, and how many people win it?
Yes man, youre awesome.
Yes, kind of. But find some basic videos here on youtube. Fx Justin Sandercoe - he has really good lessons. He calls it flick offs, though, but it is the same technique. Search for legato Justin Sandercoe.

you´re right!
sounds like allan holdsworth mixed with eric johnson and joe bonomassa
martin taylor makes these guys look like beginners!! simple as that!!
A Great player and cool guy
My legato technique is just as good as his-In my dreams! :-)
Awesome!!!!
are you meant to pull the string with the given finger when pulling off
that tone!!!!
@Hydrefyricon (Decent amount of Dist + Bridge pickup selector + Zero treble on the Amp)... tweak along this setting, and you might like what you hear : )
For me the key is your sound. What are u using exactly to get that saturated sound? I can hear a delay and some treble rolled off somewhere. Thanks
Nice video, great playing. Reminds me of Robben Ford's playing a bit.
Really splitting the atom here!! ooo ooo wee!
...and sounds like Brett Garsed too...right?
Awesome taste!
His tone is amazing...and from a les paul, who'd have guessed?
Wish i had Paul Gilberts pinky..
Loved the vid. ✌️

The meat is from 2:10 until 4:00. The rest is demonstration/playing.
does someone know how to get a hold of backingtracks in this genre? would be awsome if could help me:) fred ut
what setting should your amp be Im asking because whenever I try legato it just doesn't hold (and its not my finger strength) Please help :)
this technic cannot work without good pups, compressor, big frets etc can it?
Thats some nice legato'in!
Thank you, but as you said, its hard to explain, cuz i didn't understand a word you said lol. Thank you very much for replying and trying to explain it. sounds to me like you could make a better explanation video.
Using a compressor?

4:27 what scale did he use? i mean the ascending lick that he plays
Good lesson, thnx.
does c# minor triads form progression cord from c# diminished?
What about Holdsworths “reverse hammer ons”?
It seems like he's doing that, doesn't it? i don't know but it looks like his first finger is coming off the fretboard it the first exercise
Hi. Does anyone know which stringgauge, Allen uses?
does someone know where i can find backingtracks in this style for free? thanks for your help:) fred ut
Heyyy that's a Ritchie Kotzen lick :O !!
I read your name as "Alien Hands"
Accurate lol
pretty good
Nothing like Joe Bonamassa. Allen Hinds has been playing and recording for way, way longer than Bonamassa has.
think about Brett Garsed....
If you do it right they are. And they're certainly more legato than picking, which is percussive.
Reminds me of Brett Garsed
This guy is incredibly tasty like vintage Larry Carlton with actual chops!
is it just me that find it hard to play the stretched low notes while standing?...
He even looks like Alan!
so a legato is basically a hammer on?
To play legato is to play with fluidity. As opposed to staccato.
@MaurofdVzla Hey, why not?!
@BeatBay NOOOO Its never to late my fellow guitarist. Like my Dad says, "It aint too late until its too late".
