Wow, a lesson by not only a guy who can play but a guy who knows how to break it down and teach it. Much props to Martin Goulding. This is one of the best tutorials I've seen in years!
I like this chap. his teaching is easy to follow and the licks are helpful. and the slight grin and stony eyes that seem to be permanent on his face help keep me positive.
Man, where have I been?! This dude has his shit together with his examples and explanations. Detailing muting and picking patterns to boot! Other RUclipsrs take heed. This is how it’s done. Nice work.
I feel like an idiot because ive never even heard of Martin Gouling, but this guy is a great guitar player. great technique, awesome teacher. I just checked out his website as well. pretty good lessons there as well. awesome lesson, great examples. im hooked.
Martin, if you are still out there, Thank You for this well explained lesson. I've been trying to understand legato for a while now, and this collection of legato riffs, carefully demonstrated and explained by you is Really helping me to learn and execute the legato style. And also to make up my own legato riffs, too ! THANK YOU VERY MUCH ! I don't care what the peanut gallery posers say, you are an excellent teacher. (^_^)
TheBfutgreg I prefer my rg, less gold, maple neck and the prestige rgs from this period are J.Custom quality anyway :D img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/JTM45/rg3270body.jpg
sacredgeometry Nice guitar. But when you're as good as this guy on the video, you can pull off the flashier gold. I prefer the gold since it compliments blue
sacredgeometry Haha well in that case, just a matter of preference! I generally agree w/ you about gold hardware but sometimes, usually an RG or Soloist, it can be pulled off. I actually really like it here especially w/ the clear/flame maple "binding" and Ebony fretboard. But who knows, maybe I'll get sick of it in months or years, or maybe one day, you'll find to appreciate it haha aesthetics is funny like that.
sacredgeometry I prefer this style. To each his own lol vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/ibanez/images/c/c4/RG3EXFM1_TGB.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20081209182317
You make it look so dammm easy 😓😓. When I do it it doesn’t sound anything like you. It’s like a slap in the face reminding me how much I still have to learn.
My god what is wrong with everyone music is for everybody not just jumped up noboddies that think they know better than everyone. stop trolling and put your money where your mouth is if you all know so bloody much as to question the skill of others why the hell arent you out there making a name for yourselves? because like everyone else your still improving musicians are supposed to share their knowledge not belittle those who know less we are all in some way still learning there are musicians out there deemed by the WORLD as masters of their instrument and they still admit to still be learning, so just give it a rest!! that said very helpful lesson on legato which despite what every Idiot thinks is a helpful tool in developing technique!
The Randy Rhoads lick sounds like the ending phrase of his 1st solo in Bark At the Moon. It's so fluent and dynamically fast like that, but I'm not entirely sure if that is what he did or not. Brilliant by the way, Mr. Goulding: you're a good teacher :)
The G is the flat 7; he even said so when he slowed it down. Just because he's using a root position box pattern doesn't make it Ionian. Tonality and the position your hand is in are mutually exclusive. It ends on a B. You called it the 2nd - it is indeed the second degree of A Dorian. I'll grant you that he's not playing to any backing, so without context, I can see starting on the b7 and ending on the 2 to make more sense to you as 1 and 3, respectively.
The real tone is in the fingers and mind of a guitarist.. with that being said, Paul is actually a great great guitarist! You should check out videos of his band(s) performing live!
Nobody claimed it to be G Dorian which would have an F Natural. It has been said, repeatedly, that it is A dorian, which contains an F#, the major 7 of G, which is the one. If you're referring to the Dorian mode, the intervals are relative to the ii, and no longer the I. You dig?
So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night...
I agree with you man. Paul is really a great guitarist who can play any type of music awesomely. But here I'm talking about the tone, and not the skills :)
It's already been stated, but you do understand that G Ionian and A Dorian are the same set of notes, right? It's his intention to play this set of notes over something in A Minor that makes is Dorian.
that's an Ibanez J Custom that was probably made to order to his specs. you can't buy that, sadly... i made something similar myself though, haha. he's got a gold Edge Pro tremolo, and EMGs in all 3 positions... sexy. i've got an RG370DX that i did something similar to though. but the neck will never be as nice.
Incidentally as it has been pointed out, some of us have been playing longer than you have been alive. It's good to have an opinion. It's better to have some experience to base it on.
I don't get how the first lick is in the mode of A Dorian, when he starts on the G and ends on the B. To me, that'd be in the G Ionian mode, both because it starts on the G, and ends on the 3rd (B) which is a chord tone.
It all depends on the chord being played underneath. If you play an A minor chord, you can play the G Major scale over the top and it will sound like Dorian.
TheMasterfulcreator true, its not really in any mode since he isnt saying what key he is playing in. One has to assume he is saying that Eddie played this style lick in the key of A. If u r playing in the key of A, using the typical 5th position pentatonic blues box, you can use the pattern he is showing and end up back in the comfortable blues box.
The fact that this is even a topic reminds me modes are overrated. It's the same thing; A dorian, G ionian, B phrygian, C lydian, D mixolydian, E aeolian and F# locrian are all G major. All you really need to know is the notes in the scale and the chords it produces. In this case I would say "it's in G major", period.
Dennis Struijcken Well depending on which chord you choose to be 'home' they sound extremely different. But he's not playing over any chords so in this case I'd say you're right about there really being no difference.
On their own, yes, they might be 'meaningless' but this is a means to an end, demonstrating techniques that can be used within a solo, for example, using fast legato technique to build up to a high bend. Good legato technique is lacking in many players and it is worthy of practice.
I'm more of a middle man. I can't stand thick necks (ala gibson) but i don't want them to be papper thin (Ibanez). I'm more of a schecter/jackson kind of guy. And i'm not a bluesy kind of player, enjoying a real fat tone though! :)
G major (Ionian) is the same notes as A Dorian. Rather than starting on G you start on A which means you're on the second mode. Third mode of G major is B Phrygian. Again same notes except starting on B instead of G
+Matt Matti first off, thanks for your reply. Secondly, I fully grasp the concept you just explained, I am pretty comfortable with the modes and understand what you said but he's not starting on A. Most examples he's starting on G (at least on the 6th string)
Haha, well thanks for replying. Helps keep my music theory knowledge in check. I earned my degree in Music Theory from Wikipedia University Victor Winter
If not a begginer, just go to 2:20 legato 1
5:00 legato 2
7:10 legato 3
9:47 legato 4
12:38 legato 5
This tutor knows his stuff. Breaks it down so anyone can understand.
dick
Man this is a real lesson. Thank you.

I am a beginner and I want to thank you for just making it simple, you can bet on me looking for all your post from now on,
This is how you make a guitar lesson. Pure class, thank you sir.
Great video Martin thanks for making some pretty tricky stuff accessible. Really appreciate what you teach us.

Thank you for the great lesson Martin... you're the best!
i've been taught by this guy a few times in summer. he is an INCREDIBLE guitarist, his playing is way up there with Guthrie Govan
That has to be the nicest Ibanez I have ever seen! The binding against the trans blue and flame top are just gorgeous!
Best looking guitar I've ever seen
TheBfutgreg I prefer my rg, less gold, maple neck and the prestige rgs from this period are J.Custom quality anyway :D

Thanks for the lesson. We learn a lot but most of all we love your accent.GOd Bless You Always. Thanks again Martin.
this dude is gonna be one of my teacher's when I start at ICMP in London in September and he taught my guitar teacher, dude's an amazing teacher
It is nice that he gives fretting hand (& thumb) position instructions. A lot of youtube teachers don't.
Love the guitar, love the tone, love his accurate playing, perfect!
Fuckin hammer ons from NOWHERE!
I was gonna post the same thing you beat me to it lol
That's legato for you
Will make for a sick album name
You make it look so dammm easy 😓😓. When I do it it doesn’t sound anything like you. It’s like a slap in the face reminding me how much I still have to learn.
monster lol, love it more more more please. Best legato lesson on RUclips.
yeah it is. and those EMGs just look gorgeous in it.
wow fucking best guitar lesson i've seen in years....
Beautiful guitar and awesome licks
dude. you guys are amazing
Martin is a good player and teacher.
Martin can play any guitar and make it sound amazing.
My god what is wrong with everyone music is for everybody not just jumped up noboddies that think they know better than everyone. stop trolling and put your money where your mouth is if you all know so bloody much as to question the skill of others why the hell arent you out there making a name for yourselves? because like everyone else your still improving musicians are supposed to share their knowledge not belittle those who know less we are all in some way still learning there are musicians out there deemed by the WORLD as masters of their instrument and they still admit to still be learning, so just give it a rest!! that said very helpful lesson on legato which despite what every Idiot thinks is a helpful tool in developing technique!
love his tone
"Let's check out the example played up to speed"
that guitar is gorgeous.
Great lesson
Very good lesson!
No, the first lick in NOT "A Dorian", but clearly G Ionian (that is G Major scale that starts on the root note G - exactly as in the first lick).
Great teacher!
awesome guitar, awesome tone
awesome teacher very detailed thankyou man
Thank you..👍

exept Rhoads is not on the album, Bark At The Moon is Jake E Lee as guitarist.
Agreed a dorian is a mode of g major, but there occur a difference in sequence of notes.
I love my prestige 652rgr...but DAMN that jcustom is gorgeous!
I didn't know Alan Partridge gave guitar lessons. Good job!
great lesson!
That's a sweet guitar
It's Ibanez J.Custom so it's from the Japan market and probably never was or will be available anywhere else in the world.
Thanks for the exercices...guitar world rules. Cheers from rio de janeiro.
what a beautiful guitar jesus christ.
really good lesson, thanks!

epic lesson! cheers dude

!Great tone martin very clean guitar playing , any one knows the correct bpm for example 4
Dude looks like Vito Bratta’s lil brother. Nice vid 🤘🏻
Martin films these all in his home studio using an AxeFX II
Nobody claimed it to be G Dorian which would have an F Natural. It has been said, repeatedly, that it is A dorian, which contains an F#, the major 7 of G, which is the one. If you're referring to the Dorian mode, the intervals are relative to the ii, and no longer the I. You dig?
thank you so much!
great lick and beautifull ibanez :)
thank you so much ! nice
Nice. Was hoping for some Steve Vai style. He has some great legato licks.
very nice great
If you put on subtitles and go to 12:02 mark read what it says XD
solid gold
And good guitars they are to love ;-)
'Cause they're the best!
Awesome...
The vibrato made me cry
So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night...
Smaaashing baby!
Does anyone know why this isn't on the Guitar World site and why it isn't the lesson from the September 2012 issue of the magazine?
I agree with you man. Paul is really a great guitarist who can play any type of music awesomely. But here I'm talking about the tone, and not the skills :)
It's already been stated, but you do understand that G Ionian and A Dorian are the same set of notes, right? It's his intention to play this set of notes over something in A Minor that makes is Dorian.
Because they are the best to play fast stuff on.
that's an Ibanez J Custom that was probably made to order to his specs. you can't buy that, sadly... i made something similar myself though, haha. he's got a gold Edge Pro tremolo, and EMGs in all 3 positions... sexy. i've got an RG370DX that i did something similar to though. but the neck will never be as nice.
Great lessons, love the tone. Is that an Ibanez Prestige?
Because Ibanez guitars are universally good at every genre of music!
John Davison
This is what I thought. So in what sense is it in any mode at all without any chords as reference?
TheMasterfulcreator
true, its not really in any mode since he isnt saying what key he is playing in. One has to assume he is saying that Eddie played this style lick in the key of A. Well depending on which chord you choose to be 'home' they sound extremely different. But he's not playing over any chords so in this case I'd say you're right about there really being no difference.
Love the lesson. What gear you using? I know a lot of other viewers have the same question.
He beat them to death with their own shoes. But... That is a story for another time!
Haha, my thoughts exactly!!!
Sick vibrato
They proabably have a sponsorship deal. But that said they are fantastic guitars so you wont see any complaints from me :D
On their own, yes, they might be 'meaningless' but this is a means to an end, demonstrating techniques that can be used within a solo, for example, using fast legato technique to build up to a high bend. Good legato technique is lacking in many players and it is worthy of practice.
i play blues but i love to do stuff like this and go right into a penatonic riff, just my thing, and thanks for the lesson is what i meant to say lol
G major and A Dorian are the exact same scale. The tonality just comes from whichever chord is being played behind it
really joss !
Is that a LACS? Cuz wow.
I'm more of a middle man. I can't stand thick necks (ala gibson) but i don't want them to be papper thin (Ibanez). I'm more of a schecter/jackson kind of guy.
And i'm not a bluesy kind of player, enjoying a real fat tone though! :)
Great lesson but can someone tell me why he says these are in A Dorian? I would think they are all in G Ionian
G major (Ionian) is the same notes as A Dorian. Rather than starting on G you start on A which means you're on the second mode. Third mode of G major is B Phrygian. Again same notes except starting on B instead of G

I noticed the same thing. the first one is CLEARLY JUST G major... Ionian. nothing more nothing less. maybe he has a boner for A Dorian
Haha, well thanks for replying. Helps keep my music theory knowledge in check. I earned my degree in Music Theory from Wikipedia University Victor Winter
J Custom...I have a Steve Vai Sig from J custom..best guitar i have ever played
When I play the guitar licks with this guy on the video. It sounds like a drone effect :s or a really heavy Chorus.
I know A dorian is the second mode in G major but it does not have a flat 7 it has a natural 7th
Amazing ibanez guitar.
nice ibanez! dude what is your setup ? i love that tone and chunk!
yes, yes that is normal, keep practicing. It takes a long time.
How is that first example in a Dorian mode??? Looks like major (Iolian) to me
Guitar World has the most killer tone
Anyone know wat gear they use???
trimakasih guru
its a J.custom, Japanese custom line. Great guitars!
Nice
