As a black person from the hood, I've never known ANYONE that WANTED kids as a teenager. You'd actually get shamed for that by your peers, classmates and family if it did happen. And those teenagers would end up dropping out of school because they wouldn't be able to take care of their school duties AND take care of a kid at the same time. It was very rare that people wanted to be on welfare also. And as a kid who was sent to the corner store with food stamps by my retired nurse grandmother who obviously didn't have enough money to make ends meet, it was embarrassing to use them and uphold that stigma about black folks. That's why most single moms in my neighborhood were working more than one job or extra hours, and letting the grandma or even the child's siblings babysit their children. But I don't know. Maybe where I grew up is just the exception.
I do think it's unrealistic that most teens WANT to get pregnant and have a kid. I would actually challenge everyone to ask their parents if they were planned and I bet most would say they were not. But abortions are expensive (and not covered by medical insurance), and not an option for most people because they would feel guilty, or it goes against their faith so, they see it through....or you do have a percentage of women who think keeping the child would make the father stick around which would suggest they do not want to be single. But I'm 38 yrs old. Maybe my generation is different from whoever Aly is talking about.

It might be different in the U.K but there are 100 % young women (Particularly in poorer communities) who will get pregnant and be a single mum by choice, for the benefits/wellfare it has to offer. It's extremely expensive and difficult to get housing in the U.K, yet if you get pregnant as a single mum it's a lot lot easier, (It's got more difficult recently for single mums) and you will get your own house or 2 bedroom flat/apartment, and have all your bills paid for. A lot of the time, the woman will have a parent who is addicted to drugs or an alcoholic etc etc, so they just see it as a way to escape. Young men will join the army and young women will get pregnant.
If you grow up middle class, yes a life on benefits/welfare doesn't seem appealing, but if you are living with a bad parent, with no real hope of ever being able to afford your own accommodation, it's a lot more appealing. And to note, private housing is very unreliable, they can kick you out on a whim. And young people want their independence, they don't want to be living with their parent, or parents until they are 30 +.

somewhere destiny completely misses is that he acts like it's ridiculous that single mothers could live pretty breezy off of welfare. it's really easy in my state. Sure there’s women who love being a mother and motherhood despite being a single mom but I don’t think a lot of women necessarily love and go out of their way to be single mothers unless it’s a cope. Some end up loving it because they had no choice but to accept and learn to love it and that’s fair.

What's funny is that a lot of those same conservatives support the idea of the government giving people money for having kids because they think people nowadays aren't reproducing enough. To be fair, some insist we should only give this money to _married_ people who have kids. But then if even a married couple is just having kids for the money, that just contributes to the "breakdown of family values" that they complain about. I can't imagine that married people who have kids solely to get money from the government are likely to be great parents with strong morals or values- or that the marriage will last. Do those conservatives _really_ want to encourage such people to have children?
Also, I used to live in inner-city St. Louis. I can't tell you how many times I've overheard conversations in public where some lady said things like, "My youngest is about to turn 18. I've gotta have another baby or they'll cut off my benefits."

@@rapidashrorschachtest430 You seem to lack a basic understanding of statistics and/or reading comprehension. "28% more likely" is not anywhere near "41% of the group". 28% _more_ than 1% would be 1.28% of the group. 41% of a group is 41% of the group.
Also, the study you cite is based on adolescents "in a low resource and rural setting". So one, it's narrow in scope, not to be extrapolated to all teen girls, as you've done. Two, all of the increased deletion risks it notes have nothing intrinsically to do with the pregnancy, itself. By far the biggest one being partner violence committed against them during pregnancy. I wonder if victims of IPV might have an increased risk of self-deletion, regardless of pregnancy. Hmm.🤔
Beyond that, your assertion that a trans kid is less likely to delete themselves than a pregnant 16 year old is utterly absurd, on the face of it. For one thing, teen pregnancy has been extremely common for most of human history. And even when "preventing teen pregnancy" was a hot topic (ie. in the 90's), it was to reduce the number of black & latina single mothers on welfare. No one was concerned about it _because_ the mothers were deleting themselves, or there was some epidemic of children being left motherless due to their mothers deleting themselves. On the other hand, pretty much the entire concern around trans people (and the movement to coddle them as much as possible) _is_ their rate of self-deletion. To the point that it's weaponized as emotional blackmail against anyone who questions a trans person on anything, as though those words are going to drive them to delete themselves, right then and there, unless you bow down and parrot whatever words they demand of you. There is no significant comparison between them.

There’s something uniquely annoying about her. You ever meet one of those people that seem pretty intelligent but have the most bizarre takes that you couldnt even make up if you wanted? Like they’ve lived a pretty abnormal life which has molded them into having weird views on the world but they’re smart enough to build some backwards-ass logic for their claims. That’s kinda the vibe I get from her. Like, in that last panel she kept saying “Ive had more experience with X than anybody else here” as if she has an authority on certain topics because of the life she’s led. It comes off as really smug and makes me feel like her only real motivation for being online is to sell her lifestyle to people. But, who knows.

@@rightjablol Tbc, I think most people’s opinions are downstream from their personal experiences, to an extent. But her opinions and thought processes are so weird they dont even really map onto anybody else even within her part of the internet. Just listening to her contradictions is truly bizarre. Like how she can say that she was a strong female leader in the army but then say that was because men failed at being men. Or how she can say that she was abused by her young single mother but still advocates for teenage pregnancy. I dont think its a stretch to say that most people would have the opposite views if they had those experiences. And I really dont feel like her beliefs comes from strong partisanship or something like that. Its hard to explain exactly but its what I mean when I gave the example of person you might know who’s strange life experiences leads to their strange worldview.
Dont get me wrong, I think Destiny’s views are influenced by his abnormal life but I never get the sense that he hasnt considered all of that. Destiny has challenged his beliefs and changed them over time and his logic is pretty easy to follow. But from what I gather from these appearances and her social media is that her main goal is to sell her tradcon wife lifestyle. And her constant positioning of herself as an authority on certain topics because of her life expertise makes me think that she’s probably not ever going to change her positions. Not to say that’s uncommon among content creators but thats why most of them suck and what sets Destiny apart from a lot of them.

A soldier will receive honor and praise though he could literally lose his life. And a single mother will be praised for taking on a role of a single parent. When someone's argument against contraception is that it enables women to avoid the "consequences" of sex, they're only ever talking about female contraception, hormonal or otherwise. They weirdly have nothing to say about condoms, even though those have the same effect.

They live in equal opportunity housing (aka the projects) work part time at the liquor store and have at least 3 kids with 2-3 different dads. Do I think they wanted to end up that way? No, but they were definitely more focused on being desirable to men then focusing on better themselves. These girls thought they peaked in HS because their boyfriend was a football player. I’m from a rural community of 6k and I feel as though women are seen more as a commodity here than equals, and so when they fall pregnant are encouraged to become mothers due to the only perceived value of women in this community is to have children.
When you’re told from day 1 that your only purpose it to become a parent, and you see many teen mothers around you, I could see why the issue is self perpetuating around here. Not to mention our “sex talk” was a one day course in 4th grade about periods and nothing else, I’m from an area setting people up to become teen parents.
As much as it hurts to see a peer of mine get pregnant too soon, I can’t really blame them when everyone immediately around them is telling them it’s a good thing.
EVEN THOUGH all of the parties encouraging the pregnancy had fallen victim to that exact scenario in the past.
