It was refreshing to finally see a conversation. Not a debate, not a battle, but a genuine conversation.
I'm picking up what you're putting down. Even if scientific does not, and I agree with you.
Written and spoken language is different. But I digress, this is the RUclips comments section! Don't waste your time explaining yourself lol. Have a face to face dialogue like these two gentlemen are. Otherwise you're just going to frustrate yourself. And neither of us wants that.

Why is Russell Brand the only interviewer capable of having a civil conversation with Jordan Paterson?
And Joe Rogan. Better yet, all those classified as belonging to the intellectual dark web.
I offer this as a possible answer. Russell has had some extreme highs and lows in his life, but being the intelligent and self-aware person that he is he has taken responsibilty for his own journey. I think anyone who has ever been through a process of honest self-reflection would understand Jordan's perspective.
From a 'willingness' to understand comes a constructive conversation.

Bill Maher, another comedian, is usually still good for actual debate. While I probably disagree with Maher on the vast majority of issues, I don't mind watching a person I disagree with who actually discusses the issues with reason and facts without just accusing anyone who disagrees of only doing so because they're an evil, uncaring monster. I think comedians are accustomed to not taking themselves so deadly serious all of the time like a lot of political pundits, especially the left leaning pundits.
Seth Mcfarlane waa talking about having Rush Limbaugh on an episode of Family Guy and said that it's usually much easier to have conservatives on the show because they're willing to go along with self deprecating humor where liberals are much more reluctant to laugh at themselves. Producers on Saturday Night Live also made the same observation about having presidential candidates on the show. They said Obama was clear that he would only be in scenes that cast him as the coolest, greatest leader ever. Hillary was the same way. They said it was their experience that Republican candidates were usually far more willing to go along with whatever scenes the writers pitched to them as long as it was funny.

You can’t tar one section of society with the same brush - we’re all individuals with individual experiences and insights.

Seeing Peterson just talk and actually laugh is so refreshing and wholesome.

Great commment! Launching character attacks on others because they disagree with you is unacceptable under any circumstances and mainly only used by very disordered people. It takes emotional maturity to remain emotionally connected to another without judgement in the face of disagreement & Jordon Peterson has it in spades. Exactly. It was actually one of the best scene of this video where each and every one of us and i mean each. Right wing or left wing , could learn that even though both are completely different in their upbringing their whole life. One kinda lived a playboyish life with being in Hollywood lifestyle etc etc but other one being interested in higher studies his whole life being teacher psychologist etc. Both being so different due to their culture but due to their pursuit of Truth i think they can do these conversation even 'tolerating' the difference they do have and might even dont like . They both value TRUTH more then themselves. People who have hidden agendas can never have conversation like this. Hope one gets the point. They know labeling each other other with "name tags" just wouldn't give out any truth. I know JP but didn't know Russell was interested in such pursuit of ideas so deeply.

Christian Jardin generally, not always the rule. I’m far from being exceptionally intelligent and I still enjoy to listen to many people, even people who disagree with me, though I believe being too open minded is toxic.
@@christianjardin3110 I actually think Jordan Peterson is a little more set in his ways and unwilling to budge. I think a big part of that is because he's smart and usually correct, but I think that's a trap very intelligent people fall into. I think Russell Brand was a lot more willing to learn here, and maybe rightfully so. Either way, it's clear that Peterson did more of the talking here, and I think that very occasionally comes back to bite him.

A great observation LP.
Comedians tend to be a lot more open-minded than most and have a more realistic view of the world. It's not all that strange when you consider it that way.

Many people don't get how well educated and how well up to date comedians have to be, to be able to continue being relevant and successful. George Carlin is the best example of this.
I gained a huge amount of respect for Brand just due to this video.

@@RUclipsr-km1qo how is swearing something that needs to be "helped"? I'm not much of a swearer myself, but I've never really gotten this idea that it's necessarily bad. It can be a steam valve, which is good. Peterson's crying is another, which points to a much deeper problem. So that is bad. But the fact that some words are labeled "bad" or "forbidden" arbitrarily shouldn't signify much about a person's enlightenment. Always be wary of prescriptionists.

The best line of this segment was the last one by JP.

Well he essentially paraphrased Russells last statement about making the individual more selfless. Strong willed enough to sacrifice superfluous gains for the good of others.
To have enough mental fortitude to suffer a little so that others doing it harder may catch a break.
The problem conventional solutions such as legislation, created based on statistical analysis of the issue and such, appears to be in corruption. Presuming it is willing or able to find the impetus of the issue at all, which it appears unable to do.
On the flip side, the kind of exerstencial methods they seem to agree upon at the end though potentially effective, I fear are unlikely to work. Essentially due to a mix of corruption at the corporate/govenment level and to the nature of human greed, inability to work effectively as one in such large masses and differences of opinions on the civilian level.
They say 2 things are guaranteed in life, death and taxes. I'd add a 3rd to that list, inequality.

So in your analogy of Russell saying we should have a system the gives people fish and Jordan saying we should have a system that teaches people to fish. Russell is actually saying we should have a culture where people WANT to give away their fish in that instead of the poor being helped by a enforced tax you have a more spiritual idea of fulfillment through charity rather than material success.
That's my interpretation of it anyway.

I never gave Russell a 2nd thought when I first saw him, but I will gladly admit the more I see and learn of him the more I respect him. He absolutely seems like a super decent guy.

Some of them are challenges, but he's clearly not trying to disprove what Jordan says so much as require him to clarify his position where it might sound unreasonable to some. The line of questioning was pretty typical of friendly a interview from a at least partially opposing party.
I love how Russel uses the "So you're saying..." starter to actually attempt to understand Jordan, rather than using it as a soundbyte for an attack piece.

Russell Brand is a genuine human being. I’ve been making my peace with God so to speak today... pretty much at the end of my race. And in that moment, I still feel a genuine love that comes from him.

I’m a person of predominantly left views and I’ve only just gotten into Jordan Peterson; I think he speaks a lot of sense. I’ve watched a few of his videos now and I’ve seen no evidence of his views being negative or destructive. It’s purely intellectual, dissection of society to establish what is true. I’m glad I watched this. It looks like they had a meaningful discussion with very little disagreement

Jordan has helped me shift from being far left wing to more centre in the last 2 years. I'm tired of this left v right bickering, we need balance and grounding, yin yang.
afx777 I agree but its the voter that is to blame for this. We have created two camps that dominate our governments and our loyalty to these parties is just way over the top. Their dominance in politics needs to be challenged and only the voter can change this.

He's not a damn sheep, and neither is Russell. That's what you are watching. They can both admit that there's things that need addressed without division. Every damn political issue and narrative for how long now, is meant to keep us divided and fighting. The guys are ahead of their time but are speaking for those who are seeking the truth and real solutions. I would LOVE to see them run for president and vice president as independents I would vote for them without hesitation. They could expertly hand pick all the right people by collaborating to solve for who can address what issue. I see two guys who the sheep are wanting to be in total disagreement for entertainment.. who defy the odds because they know better. Look how easily they hear each other out with the goal being "getting to the root of the issue". Seeing the problem and putting bias aside to find the middle ground to solve the issue. I love this conversation. This is not a debate, it's problem solvers making sure to not leave anyone out.

This was a more a discussion than an interview. Loved every minute of it.

"The solution to the problem of inequality is not sociological, its psychological". We must therefore "strengthen the individual". This could be a discussion upon which both political parties might agree to explore.
Unfortunately, there is no realistic solution to the problem of inequality.
It's a perception vs reality problem where many people prefer a bigger piece of a smaller pie rather than a smaller piece of a bigger pie, yet nobody spends any time talking about how much boysenberry you're pocketing at the end of the day.
It's a question everyone seems to be skirting. Isn't it obvious that the division is basically "it doesn't matter how much people have if they feel cheated" vs "it doesn't matter how cheated people feel if they have this much"?
And a spiritual system is how society has always bridged the gap between the engine of self-interest and the societal necessity for selfless compassion.
@Lee 1227 so we are left with the options of having a system that’s not perfect but with enough hard work and understanding you can become comfortable or a system where people are told - your a victim , it’s ok , it’s not your fault. The victim mentality is a disaster waiting to happen but know that your responsible for your success and failures does give you the incentive to work harder because you find out that it does pay off. Hard work alone doesn’t achieve a level of comfort all by itself , we must learn the rules and work the rules to our favor. Teaching our kids how money and interest work are a must. Learning how real estate deals work is great too. We can’t just break our backs working and expect gold , we’ve got to learn how to pull ourselves up from the ground level and up to the managerial level or even ownership level and then pass that knowledge onto our kids. Then after passing that info on to them we must allow them to fail while instilling into them the determination of not giving up , to fighting for better and to not catch them every single time they fall. This comes from someone who had a victim mentality at a time and lost it and I became a better person for it. It’s also coming from a parent that struggles not to catch their kid on every mistake especially when I know how mean the world can be. No I don’t throw them to the wolves but instead show them a better way and just be there when they need help. I raised fighters , not physically but mentally so I have faith in them.

Therefore, for example, many marginalized people have to work so much harder to reach the same level of success of another privileged person in a Western society. When you see a marginalized person succeed, that's inspiring of course and all people should follow such examples and take responsibility regardless of the hand we are dealt with BUT that doesn't mean people should be blind to social injustices. That's not good imo. Sociological approaches aren't all useless. How black people got their rights? Didn't they fight for it through social movements? Current women's rights as well was a result of many years of social feminist movements in the past. Here, Peterson implies that black people or women should have just sucked it up and take responsibility for their shortcomings in a white-dominant societies. I certainly don't agree that sociological thinking is totally useless like Peterson suggests and I'm a psych major btw. I agree however, that strengthening the individual is a psychological matter and is the bigger contributor for real change which can hopefully lead to more social change that promotes more equality.
This is why Brand doesn't completely agree with Peterson here imo and I can see why. Key word is "completely" because Brand does see the logic of Peterson's view point and I also agree with Jordan on most of what he said. Just not completely.

I have really grown to respect Russell Brand and his fairness to guests who are considered 'controversial' like Jordan Peterson and Candace Owens and the way he treats them with respect, like human beings.
That's because Brand has manners. Jordan was very respectful too but if you watch Brand under attack, youll see that he navigates through it masterfully.

One of the rare interviews with Peterson with someone with a different opinion i truly enjoyed watching.
After several years of being an addict, living a miserable life, feeling betrayed and depressed from the past three and a half years cuz my girlfriend got married without even telling me, I have finally started taking responsibility. Today is my first day sober and on medication and I feel great already. The only problem would be for me to continue this way. Russell is very much a socratic thinker and questioner, its just that his eccentric personality kind of masks it. I find his approach to people and issues to be very incisive and honest, and I love his insertions of humor. He clearly operates comfortably in the realm of principle, which is why he is now at odds with liberal politicians; he calls them out in principle and they cannot deal with it.

Jordan Peterson's rhetorical strategy involves saying something that is uncontroversially true while at the same time as implying something that is controversial. He is an excellent psychologist and manipulator. Either you fall into the trap of arguing against these obviously true statements or you have to guess at what he is implying which he can accuse you of misrepresenting. He offers no more in the way of useful truisms than many other self help gurus. He makes a lot of money out of pitching his talks to fear and confusion while cleverly avoiding specifics and accountability.

Although I don't always feel that Brand is especially precise, I'm still mildly surprised at the general reaction to him in this particular conversation. I thought he held his own, as did Peterson, which made for a more expansive dialogue than we typically see.
What you're really saying is they had a conversation that you're incapable of carrying on. I find brand rather exact in almost everything he says, and I say almost everything he says because he does speak rather quickly his mind is sharp as a tack so I can't always perceive what he had just said because he's already on to something else. One has to be quick like a bunny to keep up with him. And he gave Jordan much respect in the idea of not cutting him off not interrupting rudely but just actually adding to the conversation of the moment. And vice versa for Jordan towards brand. A question that I have would be how would they get along regarding a much more sensitive but absolutely vital subject as in trans gay pedophilia, you know people that are genitalia oriented as an obsession. It affects children in the most selfish of ways. Because they need to be understood so badly that they're willing to trample upon the innocence of children, so as to be heard which is absolute pathetic narcissism. We can look at our current President, he was fairly elected President using current laws. Look at his administration his daughter and son in law currently hold positions that I see no demonstrable qualifications for them to hold those position. This is true in everyday life, people are clannish in behavior and tend overwhelming to behave favorably to someone they perceive in their clan. How subjective we are in are selection process for any opportunity is a critical factor in success. That has been proven many times. The same is true in criminal justice. You cannot honestly use people with obviously superior traits or talents to average people.

Seems to me that mr. Peterson is focused on a clear understanding of what is whereas mr. Brand focuses more on what could be. They are of the same heart, and this respectful discussion is proof. They are both masters at articulating the core concepts of their respective points of view.
I think that's why I find this discussion so refreshing. They're both able to eloquently put forth their own take on the topic without dismissing the other's perspective. It's rather refreshing.
Russell focuses on an idealistic future, Peterson, seems to focus on hard evidence and data, he never seems to review data with an opinion on what he wants the date to read, but more rather read the data and have it tell you what is happening.
To me, this is it right here, you need this level of logic, and this level of spirituality and compassion as a unified force in order to create great outcomes. These are the kinda people who should be running the world

Which then inevitably leads to violence. This explains why the USA spends 3 quarters of a trillion dollars per year on the military more than the next 7 countries combined and are the world aggressors, attacking countries that didn't attack us while stealing their resources and using their people for slave labour. To say that unfettered capitalism isn't to blame seems a little naive and defies logic.

Yes! I found myself coming to the conclusions that they were right at the same time that they were voicing them. You hit the nail on the head with the reason why.
I bet their minds work very similarly - both of them sort of shoot off in conversations to reference things they've read, ideas that are sort of on the peripheral but informing their line of reasoning. And it seems that both of them are aware enough of the others' references that they can keep pace. I never made the connection until now, but it's fascinating to watch.
I like that Russell interupts his answers that seem like set answers and then you get a more real dialogue and the whole thing has more value. We all need to talk more and discuss and debate. It only seems to happen here on the internet now.
