Hi @NovationHelp, what's the difference between using the 1/4" audio outputs vs. using MIDI OUT? Is it possible to use MIDI OUT directly to a computer to avoid needing a separate interface?
The difference between 1/4 audio outputs vs MIDI out is the type of information that is sent from each output. The 1/4 audio output, like the name suggests, shoots out audio. Essentially what you hear when you plug a guitar into an amp and whatever comes out of the amp is audio. MIDI outs output MIDI info. MIDI info is digital information that usually controls something on the computer or synth. MIDI is not audio! In this case MIDI are note values (C,D,E,F etc) that control the synth. You definitely need a separate interface to record audio into the computer. The interface is whats responsible for turning Audio into digital audio! Hopefully this helped :)
No homo but I fucking love you xxx So I been producing 4 years and only just got a System 1 , Arturia Mini Brute and the Roland Boutique Collection. Long story short it's more a long term investment etc. Basically none of the above in any shape or form actually explain HOW or WHY it all connects etc. The manuals are actually fucking disgraceful and you are the ONLY video I have seen after a week combing fucking RUclips. Roland are actually the worst experience I have ever had in terms of set up. It just says "USB audio/midi" but literally nothing about how it works or how you connect. Anyway. You have nailed it exactly do thank you mate. Legend
So if you buy a mininova you must buy an audio interface to record in ableton. Here in argentina, that audio interfase is more expensive than the synth...
Absolutely. Many of Mininova's parameters can be addressed and controlled from an external source. You can find a CC and NRPN map here: fael-downloads-prod.focusrite.com/customer/prod/s3fs-public/novation/downloads/9558/mininova-cc-nprn-chart_0.pdf
After installing latest software and do the steps explained here, when I open the VST it loads slowly, then shows "Connected" instead of the name of the patch. Any tweak I try makes the vst freeze and doesn't affect mininova at all. Also, I can't send midi notes to ableton. I'm using Ableton live lite that comes with Novation/Focusrite hardware, on Windown 8.1, all the software is run at 64bit. Midi in/out works perfectly on another DAW (LMMS) but I can't make the vst work on neither it or ableton. thanks in advance
+DeRobyJ well I actually have a Mac and I don't know why it won't work I have the latest software for the mininova I just can't get the vst Audio plugin to work
I have it and it is no so easy like he say's... recording in Garage Band it looks impossible ...mission to do. Also the vocoder. I can't record voices with vocoder in DAW (FL Studio and GBand). The minions sounds we can't play them in the DAW. Sad.
I just want to get one thing cleared. Do you REQUIRE an external audio interface to use the Mininova on your computer? Such as the red one you're holding at 0:54? Thanks
If you simply wish to play Mininova, then no; if you'd like to record your Mininova's audio in your DAW, you'll need to plug the audio outputs into an external audio interface or your computer's line input.
For the best quality, stereo recording, we would suggest that you connect to an audio interface like the Scarlett used in the video but you could also connect MiniNova's Mono output direct to your computer's audio input if it has one.
We would recommend using a dedicated audio interface if you would like to create professional recordings but you may find that you're also to record using the mic input on your computer if it has one.
Thanks for the video. I can do all this with the mininova and record the midi and audio into Ableton but how do I then copy the midi notes onto another channel so I can layer up and record a different patch in the mininova? Basically I want to have recordings of the audio from 2 or 3 patches underneath each other. I can't seem to send the midi notes from Ableton to a new patch in the mininova. I can select a new patch and play a new pattern but I want to be able to send the original midi to trigger a new patch?
Afraid that isn't possible. You would need to sequence and record each Patch separately and then combine them as audio. Mininova is monotimbral and not multitimbral so that essentially means it can only generate sounds using 1 patch at a time. It isn't possible to address and sequence multiple different Patches simultaneously. John // Novation UK 🇬🇧
@@NovationHelp thanks for the reply. I get that it’s not multitimbral which is why I’m recording / rendering a part to audio. Hello. I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but, by any chance, would you happen to know how to use the Mininova as a midi controller for Android apps such as Perfect Piano, for example? Afraid that isn't possible. MiniNova is designed to be used standalone or with Mac/Windows PC only.
