As a PD patient this has been the best lecture on research by Dr. Chan that I have ever heard.. He is insprational and of major help to me. As a PD patient I have been on different drugs that were totally useless. Thank you Dr. Chan for all the important information you shared with this PD patient.

IF YOU CAN TREAT THAT PART OF THE DISEASE I THINK YOU WILL COME A LONG WAYS IN HELPING THE MAJORITY OF PD PATIENTS LIVE A MORE NORMAL AND COMPLETE LIFE. THANKS FOR ALLOWING ME TO LEAVE A COMMENT.
Multiple researchers at UF are working on the walking and falling (gait and balance issues) because it is so important. We definitely recommend getting a PT eval and if the PT you see doesn't know much about PD, maybe you can educate them. Our team and others are trained in movement disorders.
Thanks for the presentation. I was diagnosed with a mild case of parkinson disease a few months ago. I am taking Pramipexole, what do you know about this medication? I heard there is a treatment called deep brain stimulation. Can you tell me if this is recommended? Thanks.

It is. The steps in research are important as they help to show that the new treatment is safe and effective. At Fixel, our interdisciplinary approach takes advantage of approved therapies that work for our patients. That may include medicine, surgery, therapy (PT, OT, Speech). Then we also have clinical trials that patients can participate in.

It can... slurring of words, difficulty in control over breath, forming the words, etc. But there are therapies (breathing, singing, speech therapy, to name a few) that can help counteract the problems one might encounter. And every person with parkinson's is different - thus the saying: "If you've seen one person with Parkinson's, you've seen one person with Parkinson's."

It can. It's important that you see a Parkinson expert who can help determine if the speech issue is from PD or from something else.
