Hello Simon. I actually had the chance to ride in one of the games in northern Afghanistan in 2001. I even managed to score. The chaos in the middle of the scrum is insane. I was actually bit by another rider’s horse, I punched the horse and his rider laughed at me. I have pictures from the game if you and your staff are interested is seeing them. After an hour or so of gameplay, my military teammates and I were battered, exhausted but thrilled to death for having been extended the invitation to participate by Mazar I Sharif’s Governor Atta. An Associated Press war corespondent was in the crowd an “snuck” a photo of the “crazy Americans” playing goat polo. That picture would find its way into The NY Times in Dec 2001. Our chain of command had “a few questions” for us once the paper hit the stands. Have a great day. Love your content across all your channels. Keep up the great work. Especially love the Biographics channel. Helps me feed my mind everyday. Thanks again. 🖖🏼
Thank you for your service. Also thank you for telling us this awesome story. That must have been a great honor to be extended such an invitation. I can't even imagine the kind of chaos that must be, and to be bit by a horse on top of it, crazy! But it also sounds kind of fun. Happy new year to you.
And I actually used one of those pictures your referring to in my poster as part of my presentation in a grade 8 cooking class here in Toronto (everyone thought it was so cool to see a solider on a horseback playing this sport). Well, thank you for your service, and who knew I would be thanking my source directly on RUclips almost 20 years later. Truly, the world has gone flat!
"Beating one another with whips as they fought over the goat." Life before internet connection and Pornhub I am guessing either that or starting a new category on it.
I appreciate how you explained that most sports are throwing around some version of an animal carcass. I find it important to not put westernized judgments on things we are less familiar with.
"Some kind of animal carcass" uhh... this involves one that is killed exclusively for the sport and can't be reused. Plus, most footballs today are synthetic. These people are STILL doing this. They're sick.
Both of you have so much insight and make a thoughtful appeal. I’m moved to agree now... Oh wait, this is RUclips and the comments tend to be aggressive and baseless. My bad.
When I was a kid a new neighbors' kid came over when I was trying to catch a chicken. I finally caught it and wrung its neck and the kid ran home screaming. I didn't understand what the problem was so I just started soaking the chicken in hot water. The next thing I know is my father, the neighbors father, and a cop was walking around the house. My dad and the cop knew immediately what was going on and knew I wasn't doing anything wrong, but none of us could convince any member of that family that we were all horrible people. To this day, it still surprises me that people really have no idea where food comes from. I have this mental image of God separating light from dark, making trees and animals... And the eternal Walmart... And it was good.
Thank you so much for sharing this story. I have met people like this. One in fact, that was highly critical of my family hunting and fishing. (For food purposes, never "sport") They insisted that it was "much more humane to just go to the grocery store and buy meat and seafood". And yes, they actually said it just like that. I love your analogy of the eternal Walmart!

Beating each other with whips, riding on horseback, and trying to take a disemboweled headless goat carcass from each other... I wonder why it never caught on with the Olympics.
You omitted kok buru, the version played at the World Nomad games. Saw quite a bit of this in Kyrgyzstan. I understand the winning team keeps the goat and cooks it up, so no wastage.
I watched this just outside Kabul September 1970. It was held in honour of the Kings birthday. The field was about a mile square and they used every bit of it, including the U. N. part of the car park where we were. The French ambassadors Citroen got quite a few hoof marks on it, black, shiny and dented. Although we were in the middle of a melee, no spectator got hurt but did get covered in dust. It was quite a scene. I had my 22nd birthday there a week later and celebrated with a beer which cost a US dollar and that was quite an expense in comparison at the time. I'll never forget it, Afghanistan is a breathtaking country that plays a rough game on beautiful horses.
In Argentina they play "Pato" in which 2 teams on horseback fight over a duck and try to put it through a hoop. Nowadays it's played with ball with handles, but originally that used to be a duck.
I got to see bushkashi games just outside Mazar-E-Sharif. The folks around there had an area about the same size of a football field where they played the game. There was also camel fights and dog fights going on at the same time. It was a time to get together with other men of the area to sell/ trade horses, sell/ smoke some hash and generally a good time is had by all. With the possible exception of the goat. You did get to see some amazing horsemanship though.
Thanks m9, I've been looking for the name of this sport but didn't want to rewatch the entirety of The Ascent of Man. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find that series in the states.
Bonus fact: To get a good visual of buzkashi watch the 1971 movie release "The Horsemen" starring Omar Sharif. Great movie with incredible riding wherein Omar's character loses a leg through amputation and yet appears to handle a horse even better when he recoups. Intense storyline.
I first heard about this game through news coverage of the World Nomad Games. They've been held in Afghanistan for several years now, but I believe the 2020 Games have been planned to take place in Turkey. There was actually a US team of 10 at the 2018 competition, made up mostly of movie stunt riders and rodeo workers.

In the 1980's the CIA sent a former Green Beret to Afghanistan to fight against the Soviets. He was to date the only westerner to "almost" win in this game. The match was interrupted by a Soviet helicopter attack. The agent's name - John Rambo
As rugby predates American football by around half a century I would have thought the shape of the ball was derived, as was American football itself, from that used in rugby. This explanation has a whiff of the Cooperstown myth about it.....
The point there was it's the same basic reason the rugby ball is shaped as it is. It just got slightly refined to be more pointy as the sport developed and ball-making materials and the like advanced.
