"The term "mature content" is commonly used to describe material that is intended for adult audiences, and that may contain explicit or suggestive themes, violence, sexual content, language, or other elements that are not suitable for children or adolescents. The use of "mature content" is a general warning and can be used to describe a wide range of media, including books, films, television shows, video games, and websites. "Normal People" is a psychological drama and romance novel written by Irish author Sally Rooney. The novel was published in 2018 and quickly gained popularity for its intricate depiction of the relationship between two young people, Connell and Marianne, as they navigate through life and love over several years. The story explores themes of power dynamics, class differences, and mental health, as well as the complex emotional experiences of young adulthood. Through its insightful and honest portrayal of human relationships, "Normal People" offers a profound and moving examination of the complexities of modern love and the human condition."
" The way people love and want to be loved can vary greatly depending on a number of factors, including their cultural background, personal experiences, and individual personality. Some people may value physical affection, such as hugs and kisses, while others may place a greater emphasis on verbal affirmations of love. Some people may prefer acts of service or gift-giving as expressions of love, while others may prioritize quality time spent together. Ultimately, the way we love and want to be loved is influenced by our own unique needs and desires, and it's important for individuals to communicate their love languages to their partners in order to build a strong and fulfilling relationship. When both partners understand and respect each other's preferred methods of expressing and receiving love, they are able to build a deeper connection and strengthen their bond. "

Never understood why everyone says the scene broke them, that it was sad etc. For me it was comforting because through this dialogue we can understand that they will stay together despite the barrier that await them. For once they managed to communicate and the dialogue makes me feel like they are finally at peace with themselves means they’ll be in peace in their relationship too. :)

The final "we'll be okay" is brilliant really, because on the one hand you can read it as in reference to them as couple and thinking they can make it through it, but on the other hand it could just as easily be read as "we'll each of us will end up ok going our separate ways" and its kind of crushing.

She understands that they love each other but they need to do this to be better.

Bingo! It's about her gaining independence and I believe she loves Connell so much that she wishes he will gain his independence and develop his identity too.
A sign of true love for someone isn't about always wanting them by your side or trying to control eachother. It's about contributing to eachother's growth and supporting them unconditionally in their own journey.
Once you gain that confidence and independence in yourself, you're able to be supportive and loving without bitterness or possessiveness.

Also, when it comes to her character development if you pay close attention you’ll see every time Connell told her he loved her she never said it back. i'm proud of Marianne. She saw the big picture. I felt like she understood, through their time together, that they both had grown as people and wants them to continue to grow and find themselves as individuals even more than she wants to be with Connell. I think thats why she encouraged Connell to leave even though she intended to stay. Out of love. Love for herself and for Connell. I found it very selfless and moving. And I'm proud of Connell. In the face of what may seem like denial from Marianne, he decided it was for the best as well. I don't think he found that love for himself that Marianne was starting to find for herself and I don't think it all makes as much sense to him. I think he's simply choosing to trust her. I found that to be very brave. In my head I like to think that he really finds himself in New York and becomes successful. And that he then understands why Marianne encouraged him to go.

    • @jennyh5645

completely agree, also, Marianne had struggled with voicing her own wants in the past, this scene is so crucial because we get to see her making a decision based on her need, her wanting to stay.
in the book, it writes: he brought her goodness like a gift and now it belongs to her. ...they’ve done a lot of good for each other. Marianne understands now. Thus, I find this scene sums up their story for now in a very graceful wholesome manner, well-executed!

I think its not a sad scene. Its the most meaningful decision they made. They are finally free in their love for each other. So confident in it that they are willing to fly, grow more. And i think thats what true love is, when we really love someone we want to see the other person grow and that becomes more important than binding that person to you. Letting free knowing it in your heart that you are loved so much and that youll never feel the same connection with anyone else. Its so special and they are aware of it now. So that comforts me that wherever they go they will keep each other because they couldn't figure out the world without each other .

The author wrote a short story called At The Clinic and Connell is back in Ireland and he broke up with a girlfriend, and Marianne broke up with her boyfriend and they’re back to having sex, but you can infer they’re getting back together.
A year apart wouldn’t be enough to break them up. Just like Connell did with a previous girlfriend he would at least try to remain in communication. As for Marianne, there is nothing keeping her in Ireland, one friend and no family.

i felt the exact same way when i first finished the book, surprisingly though, it translates really well on screen
i thought about why that was, i guess a lot of supposedly romantic novels i’ve read are often written in a more exaggerated tone in terms of the plot and dialogue...etc
normal people struck me as a bit more plain initially, but i’ve read the books twice now and found the “plain” to be quite relatable/realistic actually, which is probably why the tv series was so well adapted and successful!

I remember season 1 episode 6, I stopped watching for a bit because it seemed like they were going to break them up when they put that "6weeks earlier thing" because I couldn't stand to see this ruined but I'm glad I continued watching, I'm so proud of them, they have grown, from not communicating about how they felt & misunderstanding each other to having such a conversation, From Marianne not believing Cornell when he said he loved her (obviously because she had never been loved & she couldn't believe someone could actually love her) to her saying I know when he told her how much he loved her.
I'm grateful for the series and in a weird way it felt like therapy to me.

The ending is heartbreaking & jarring after first watching it but ultimately I feel this was the most fitting ending. I consider this one of the most realistic depictions of what it’s like to fall in love with someone & the highs & lows that come with it. Love isn’t always simple, sometimes it’s complicated & hurts. Fictional romances often sell this narrative that love conquers all when that isn’t always the case. The ending is fitting for that reason because more often than not love stories don’t always end in a happily ever afters.

This is a happy ending. Connel and Marianne use love to heal each other. Without Connell's love and help, Marianne will fall into the abyss of sexual abuse and be unable to extricate herself. Similarly, without Marianne's love and encouragement, Connell would not be able to get out of his gloomy and depressed personality and grow up, otherwise he would live his life in obscurity! True love heals each other!

Instead we ended up with careers, but trying and unfulfilling personal lives. Not the ending I wanted, but it felt proper after everything they’ve been through as a couple and as individuals. It was nice seeing Connell break out of his comfort zone and take that step to peruse his dreams, although it was odd of Marianne to not want to go with him to New York since it was only for a year and her life in Ireland wasn’t really eventful either. That bit felt a bit off but still a bittersweet ending to an absolutely brilliant show.

I have a cool insight if anyone is willing to read! Plus I literally have no one to talk to about this so I need to get this out lol.
So from what I understand, depending from which eye you cry from there is a meaning behind it. The left eye represents pain and the right eye represents happiness. Connell begins to cry and only cry from his left eye. This tells us that it pains him to have to leave this relationship again, and that it also pains him for having to start a new life in New York without Marianne. For Marianne, she begins to cry with her right eye, and then tears from from the left eye starts to stream as well. This indicates that she's finally happy about herself and her life, but just like Connell, it also pains her to have let go of her first love. They only want the best for each other, and it’s displayed here in this scene. But this also doesn’t deny the fact that they both truly love and care for each other. Although this can just be me reading too much in between the line, I would like to believe in this interpretation. For myself, I do believe they do comeback to each other because it's been proven many times through out the show. But when they finally do meet again, they would have both matured into fine young adults and have a much happier/healthier relationship!

So have just finished reading the book version and of course I was FUMING at the ending. I mean completely out of love for Connell and Marianne yknow? Chapter after chapter things got even more twisted and complicated for them and I kept turning the pages hoping for a relief for them both. I kept reading on, hoping Rooney would hand us a nicely wrapped up ending, like a gift. So, out of my fit of desperation, anger, and heartache, I scoured the internet for the show’s version of the ending instead. I would say *this* has given me better closure than the book. Their dialogue and interaction was a lot more tender. Even when both endings were essentially the same ie Connell decides to move to America whereas Marianne stays in Dublin, the nuance is definetely there - which I think is so genius of the director. I do find the show’s ending a lot more tender and wholesome than the book’s and gives hope that they might rekindle their relationship. Even when some of the same lines from the book was used in the show, there seemed to be more assurance from both parties that conveyed that they were both mutually rooting wholeheartedly for each other’s success and happiness no matter where life takes eother of them and that if, their paths do cross and the stars do align, they will find each other again - yet at the same time, they were mature enough to not make promises. The scene where they were both sat on the bedroom floor also portrayed a moment of vulnerability and closeness for both characters to which they were finally able to have an open and honest conversation with each other about their feelings. This to me seemed to convey that both Connell and Marianne have finally understood the strength and extent of their love towards each other whereas in the past, they never openly expressed it which has led to a lot of miscommunication and doubt. This, alonsgide the characters’ gestures during the scene (Connelle crying into their interlocked hands) bears some flicker of hope that they could and WANT to make it through despite taking different paths in life. Whereas in the novel, Marianne sounded a lot more distant and cold. She was obviously shocked by the news and decided to spend the moment taking a jab at Connell and questioned whether he loved Sadie instead. This to me was such a monumental hint of the direction that both their relationship would take (at least in the novel’s version). I mean, we’ve practically reached the end of the novel and they’ve both gone through so much yet Marianne is still insecure about Connell’s love for her. And in the novel, while Connell repeatedly tries to convince Marianne that he isn’t, in fact, in love with Sadie whilst also trying to have a conversation with her about this whole moving to New York thing, Marianne busied herself with brushing her hair instead. I assume she was positioned facing away from Connell, as well, as this important final conversation was taking place. The phsyical distance the author has created when compared to the close proximity that Connell and Marianne shared in the show was the biggest difference. It has urged the couple’s story to end in a more brisk, abrupt, and distant manner when compared to how it ended in the show. In the novel, Connell’s last line was “just tell me to stay and i will; this felt like Connell’s desperate cry for Marianne’s affection, as if what he wanted was to confirm whehther Marianne felt strongly enough towards him to hold on to him. It did’t matter whether Marianne had told him to stay or if she had told him to take her with him, either answer would have indicated to Connell that Marianne wanted their relationship to continue despite the new hurdle. Instead, Marianne only repeats “you should go”. To me, if I were Connell, this sounds like an ultimatum. It sounded like Marianne was giving up without putting up a fight, regardless of whther her intentions were coming from a good place (ie whether she was saying that purely out of support for Connell’s career). So yes, I do love the show’s ending more. It’s a lot more satisfying and warm and reassuring whilst also capturing the essence of the novel. If what Rooney wanted to convey was the fragility of young (first) loves, the show seemed to leave the audience with a hope that perhaps young (first) loves truly are eternal, and that soulmates do exist no matter what shape / form they may come in (whether as friends or lovers). I mean, the book has repeatedly shown us that Connell and Marianne were made for each other. Whether it was in their tiny town during high school or even after moving to big city Dublin, no matter how many people they had both been with, they could both never quite entirely be their truest selves and feel completely as if they belonged if they weren’t with each other. So yes, I would like to believe in some distant decade, Connell and Marianne are back together 🥲😌.

This final scene let me strange feeling. In some way they talk as if it was the end of their story. But there's no reason for their story to end. They will continue to see each other and talk everyday by skype as they did when Marianne was in Sweden. And they will inevitably see each other again for real when Connell will return to Ireland or Marianne pay him a visit in New York (I can't imagine Connell spend one year in New York without coming back to see Marianne and his mother, or inviting them in New York, for Christmas and New Year holidays). And we know that each time they see each other, their feelings come back. Their love is strong enough to withstand the distance.
But me, if I were Connell, I would have said to Marianne that nothing is more important for me than living with her. I wouldn't go to New York. The life is made of choices. Connell has the choice between going to New York or stay with Marianne. The fact that he doesn't choose Marianne is incomprehensible for me.
