  • Turkmenistan is a country located in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the east and northeast, Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south, and the Caspian Sea to the west. Its capital and largest city is Ashgabat.
Turkmenistan has a population of approximately 6 million people and is known for its natural gas reserves, which are among the largest in the world. The country has a largely arid and desert-like climate, with very hot summers and cold winters.
Turkmenistan was formerly part of the Soviet Union and gained independence in 1991. Since then, the country has been led by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, who has been in power since 2007. The country has been criticized for its lack of political freedom and human rights abuses.
Despite its wealth of natural resources, Turkmenistan's economy is heavily reliant on exports of natural gas, and the government maintains strict control over most aspects of the economy. The country is also known for its ornate and grandiose public buildings, many of which were constructed under the current president's rule.
It's difficult to make a direct comparison between the strictness of Turkmenistan and North Korea as they are different countries with different political systems and social norms. However, both countries have been criticized for their lack of political freedoms and human rights abuses.
In Turkmenistan, the government exercises tight control over most aspects of society, including the media, political opposition, and civil society. Freedom of speech, assembly, and religion are severely restricted, and the government has been known to imprison and torture political dissidents and journalists.
Similarly, North Korea is known for its authoritarian regime, which exercises strict control over all aspects of society. The government heavily restricts access to information, and political opposition is not tolerated. The country is also known for its severe human rights abuses, including forced labor and public executions.
Overall, both Turkmenistan and North Korea are considered to be among the most repressive and closed societies in the world, and both countries have been criticized for their lack of political freedoms and human rights abuses.
Turkmenistan is known for having some unusual and strict laws, many of which reflect the country's authoritarian political system and conservative social norms. Here are a few examples:
The government has banned certain breeds of dogs, including pit bulls, Doberman pinschers, and Great Danes, as well as cats with short tails or ears.
The country has strict rules on public behavior, including a ban on smoking in public, drinking alcohol outside of designated areas, and chewing gum in public.
The government has also banned certain types of music, including rap and heavy metal, as well as certain hairstyles and clothing styles that are seen as too Western.
Turkmenistan has also imposed strict controls on the internet, including blocking access to many social media sites and requiring all internet service providers to operate through a state-controlled network.
The government requires all men to serve two years of military service, and failure to do so can result in imprisonment.
Women are required to dress modestly in public, and the government has banned makeup in many public places.
Overall, Turkmenistan's legal system is highly centralized and authoritarian, with strict controls on public behavior and limited freedoms for its citizens.

I was born and grew up in Turkmenistan and people are not happy there. There are high unemployment, bad ecology and absurd laws. For example: women are forbidden to wear make up and visit beauty salons; if you want to stay at the hotel with your partner you have to supply your marriage certificate; you can’t buy exclusive luxury car for yourself if the president doesn’t have the same car; when president was going to visit our city (i’m not from capital) he ordered to remove outside part of air conditioners on the buildings because it spoils the view; all the school students since high school and all workers from companies must go to the cotton harvest in the fields.
We emigrated to another country, but many of my relatives who live in Turkmenistan complain about their government and want to emigrate to. The average salary 350 US dollars. This is an absolutely dictatorial country with poor citizens.

Hi, turkmen here! I left Turkmenistan and applied for political asylum 5 years ago. I can confirm that people there are happy, simply because they dont believe, or rather dont wanna believe, that there is a happier life outside of the nation. Inly the more educated know what freedom is there. But those that are in denial still live happy lives.
Small edit: I don't want to spread misinformation, so I will just add that everyone's lives in Turkmenistan heavily depends on connections and the amount of money they earn. Many people have answered me that they are from Turkmenistan but have lived happy lives. And as per request I will just say that what I'm talking about in my comment is what I saw personally through my 13 years living there with my own 2 eyes. I understand that some may have had different experiences, but to say that Turkmenistan is fine and has all the resources and human rights as any other country is like bullshitting in my face. I can talk for hours about how many of my family members died from the lack of medicine and treatments. About my family members who were wrongly accused of crimes because they knew too much. I can talk about my own mother who was detained for months because of her dispute with a politician. I don't want you thinking that everyone's life was as bad as mine in Turkmenistan, but you have no right to say that Turkmenistan is like any other country. My story is just one of many, and hopefully one day dictatorship will cease to exist in Turkmenistan and we can hear the stories of other people as well. If you are a fellow Turkmen I really do hope that you and your family is doing ok ♡

      Tell us more

    • @afreightdogslife
      @afreightdogslife Год назад +157

@manikantasaiD Well, when you travel from the airport to the hotels that are located at the edge of the Caspian Sea, you can't help but notice that there are no local people wandering around the area. The locals that you do get to see are, for the most part, employees of the hotels or people who work for the state, and they are the ones that keep the landscaping of the town neatly groomed.
As you check in to the hotel, you will have a very limited choice of television stations and / or cable shows. Most of the tourists that you do see are Russians or Ukrainians, and the rest of the tourists are really airline crew members like myself.
There are no places in the area where you can go and exchange foreign currency into local currency. You must do this at the airport at a local bank, and the exchange rate is really bad.
The workers at the hotel are friendly, and they speak fluent English and Russian.
The food at the hotel is good and alcoholic beverages are very expensive. We were advised by the hotel employees not to venture to the nearby town because there was nothing for us there, and transportation (taxi) was not going to be available to us, so we never ventured to the town, as we only stayed at the resort and enjoyed our stay there.
Every time I arrived there, the area gave me the feeling as if we were in a Hollywood movie set, complete with a town and parks, with roads and freshly planted trees, with no actors to be seen anywhere around. The only thing missing was the movie crew waiting for the actors to appear to start filming. That's the feeling that I had and could give you.
At one time, we went to Ashgabat, and from there, we took a private tour (road trip) towards the famous Gates of Hell. This was as I remember, a 03 hours and 45 minutes road trip. There were people there when we arrived, and ended up staying almost 4 hours. When we were done, we took the small tour bus back to Ashgabat. It was an unexpected and interesting tourist attraction. I believe the trip was worth the price we ended up paying.
For the most part, I enjoyed my time in Turkmenistan.
