I'm not a farmer/rancher; just 76 years old living in an apartment in Texas BUT I really appreciate what Gabe Brown and others are doing to "regenerate" our soil base back to what it was before it was destroyed. Nutrition health is what God had intended for us by putting the wellness in our foods. A study was done years ago, I believe 1917, that the soils have been depleted of nutrients and that was prior to all of this "conventional" upscale ag practices. I applaud folks like Gabe and these young folks at Seven Sons.
Three generations ages 1 year old to 63 year old met Gabe Brown in Pendleton 2017. He is the real deal, he is most of all practical and humble. His book was hot off the press and I purchased 3 signed books for each generation. We joined the Regenerative Ranching movement in 2013 and have never looked back to conventional practices. We also attended the Grass Fed Exchange in South Dakota. It was life changing. It was a rock solid conference. The Regenerative AG movement is a solid based movement, where all welcome.
The biggest thing that stood out to me that Gabe said is...we create our own droughts and floods with our agricultural practices. Mind blowing and eye opening to know how significant an effect we have in not only destroying our lands and ecosystems but the affect on weather and climate as well.

When I first heard Gabe Brown give a keynote speech, I was all in. As a natural health educator and researcher, I saw that regenerative ag did for the soil what a healthy microbiome does for the human body. Also, for example, we'd have to eat 7oranges to get the nutrition that our grandparents got from one orange. And we'd be getting pesticides and other chemicals that they weren't subjected to. Regenerative Ag is the Future of a Healthy World.
Yes, my big take away is Gabe's inclusiveness and "everyone welcome" and "no one is a competitor; there are customers enuf for everyone." I think the word is "magnaminous." I'm from the old days of "organic." I can see now how "organic" was too narrow, too niche. "Regen" is about Regenerating people, animals, farms, farmers, economics, nutrient-dense foods, saving soils. More holistic. Less elitist. Part of this is, "On their own Reg farmers are not so smart; but, we know a lot of farmers and can always ask our smart friends" (paraphrase).
....Organic Agriculture is neither niche nor elitist.... NorEverWasIt.... 'Regen' is a fundamentally VERY good idea but the Devil is in the Deployment.... GLYPHOSATE.... in a word.... who among us wants to eat glyphosated 'Regen' food over Organically Grown.... especially for reasons of CONTRIVED elitism ('hippies'v.Bubba)...(REVERSE elitism..?)...(no... wait... that's Elite-ism.... AGAIN) I'm looking at RealDealNoChemReGen.... gotta say it.... cause Bayer's looking at Regen.... and THEY own Monsanto.... and WANT to own 'Regen' AND.... Nature and.... YOU....speaking of Elite-ism.... perhaps the Bigger question here is how many more people have to suffer the DYS-ruption from metabolic DYS-RUPTURE.... before we all understand the meaning of words like NATURAL.... as well as words like TOXIC CHEMICAL TRANSITION.... w/ no appended Time-line....
Gabe Brown is do a talk on pasture for our West Virginia University Extension program on February 17. West Virginia has very steep hills many of which can not be used for crops or pasture. Gabe what do you think of using deer as part of the mix. No fencing, no feeding, no potential for causing erosion because they are relative light weight. Also are you familiar with the book Tree Crops by J. Russel Smith? Written in the '40's and '50's in response to farmers growing corn on hills sides that were too steep. I've experimented with improved persimmon, mulberry, black walnut and berries for hill farming and think there is a lot of possibilities. We get 40 inches of rain a year plus 160 day growing season and land is around $ 1,000 / acre.
2 years later- with the looming fertilizer shortage from all of the major suppliers, I wonder how many farmers that blew off regenerative agriculture now wish they'd started.
Would the principles of “regenerative farming” be able to be applied to gardening? What is the best composting technique to build garden soil? Also, what are your thoughts about utilizing rain barrows for water preservation for the garden; and resources ( any easy to understand and use?). So appreciative of any advice; thank-you! 💕 I love your sharing; my father farmed ~ ‘regeneratively’ 1932 - 1987. ❤️
go with cover crops,terminate them in the spring.you can use compost,but unless you turn them in,which is disturbing the soil,you're not improving soil...cover crops do

Working with nature is exactly what consumers want and it will be better for everything and everyone. Why would this be a problem?
