I don't remember it being mentioned in the run (though it may have been), but as of right now SpootyBiscuit is the only person to ever even successfully complete the game this way, let alone speedrun it. That's how hard this is.
Couple responses to some comments I've seen here: - ZELLLOOO (the couch commentator) is getting an undeserved bad rap. The audio setup for GDQ is quite complex and allows for tweaking audio track levels to individual headsets. Couch commentary was fairly low on my end and not at all a distraction for me. I'm glad ZELLLOOO was able to do commentary as most of the more active NecroDancer community members weren't able to make it out to GDQ. He did a great job especially considering he was couching a TON of runs in this block, and we had very limited opportunities to really rehearse commentary (though by the game's nature, having completely rehearsed commentary is pretty hard to do anyway). - You have no idea how badly I wanted to make this run a legit all zones mode clear. I practiced pretty much every day for a combined total of literally hundreds of hours ever since this category was accepted. Before the run started, I was even considering a one-time full restart if I died past zone 1. Ultimately though, forgoing consistency and safety in a marathon is an irresponsible route to take when you're sharing the stage with so many other runners. Even if I *had* committed to a legit no-single-zones-mode run and was playing the best NecroDancer of my life (which wasn't happening considering I was getting hammered by a cold I'd caught a couple days prior), a legit full run was likely out of the question once the stutters and crashes kicked in. [shamelessplug]Ultimately, if what you want to see is grinds for all zones mode runs without safeties, then that's what *my* twitch stream is for - not GDQ's charity marathon stream.[/shamelessplug] - Mic was picking up the keyboard a bit more than I would've liked, but unfortunately that's just how it ended up. I use a very loud mechanical keyboard and deliberately tap a little harder to keep my keypresses audible - it helps me stay on-beat through panic-ridden scenarios. If I do Coda runs in GDQ in the future, I'll consider de-miccing completely for the run and letting couch 100% cover commentary. Anyway, I went in at least wanting a sub-20, but considering the curveballs thrown at me I'm happy to have made it in under estimate at all. Still kicking myself a little for the DM3 fat-finger, but that's just how it goes on stage sometimes. Thanks everyone for understanding and for all the love!
I have a hifi headset and even when I try to focus on your typing I don't hear it that much while I was able to hear the sound of the game just fine so I think most of the people complaining about it just have a "bad-luck" configuration or are just complaining people in general. That or they have a "bad beat hearing" so they aren't able to adapt themself to the music beat + the key beat. (I played a lot of rythm games so maybe people like me are so used to hear keyboards on beat that we aren't miding them anymore). Of course you can make it sound better but don't forget you're doing your run and no matter what you do people will complain for the small things (like if you don't speak at all, you'll have a lot of people complaining you were asocial and stuff, I don't know xD). Keep what you're doing because you're doing it great!
Please ignore all the haters, this was a great exhibition of skill, and a fantastic run. I'm very glad you chose this, and for what it's worth you've definitely inspired me to give crypt of the necrodancer a shot, it looks like a fantastic game!
First of all, this was a phenomenal run from my experience of the game. Also, thanks so much for your shoutout at the end keeping it real. I think a lot of people forget -- we all love video games and we love seeing people show their skills -- but the real reason you were there playing for us is because of the funds the medical community needs for cancer prevention research. It's incredible how much money you and other runners have raised. Thanks for tastefully mentioning your friend's recent hardship to bring us back down to earth for a moment.
I don't understand the people complaining about the keyboard clicking noise. If it wasn't for it I would have have forgotten halfway through how absolutely MENTAL this performance was. Each clicking noise is him taking a decision in his brain and sending the correct input to the game. Each and every clicking sound. Keep that in mind.
@@lucasromanchuk2868 dude already explained that it helps keep him on time in a game where beat us everything you need to be able to hear that beat it's the binding of issac meets ddr
@@lucasromanchuk2868 the clicking of the keyboard is helping me to follow the runner's rhythm and keep track of what he's doing. its not annoying to me at all. its helping me focus, if anything.
he's literally playing the game at double speed....... anyone who has never played this would probably have no idea how crazy this run is lmao just insane
I’ve only managed to beat Story Mode with Aria (1-hit death, only dagger, but in Story Mode you have checkpoints between zones). I’m proud to say that was my biggest gaming achievement yet. But this... this is madness.
yeah, half if not more of the games difficulty is managing what NOT to do, considering the ENTIRE game is only played with 4 buttons. that said, would love to see a speedrun with an actual DDR pad - even if its just stock cadence or duo
Eeeeeeh, all of them are DLC achievements. He most likely had the game at 100% already. The DLC character Nocturna is just not as fun for somebody who is _literally a god at the game_ She's a very newbie friendly character. Also one of those achievements is an All character run. So, there's an all characters run - which on it's own is tedious as hell (And can screw over hours of work by one mistake) and then there's the DLC+ all chars run which is even worse. He did the former. Still, almost 5k hours, amazing!
To give an idea on how easy it is to play as Nocturna Your starting weapon basically lets you parry-attack out of any situation. Get cornered by 3+ monsters, just keep triggering a attack action against them and you'll never get hit once due to parries blocking any incoming damage completely when you attack
To elaborate on how easy it is to play as Nocturna, once I got cornered between two monsters and two walls (an orc and a blademaster right next to me, so the two were completely immune to my attacks, the edge of the map and a shop wall with no bombs). I just kept attacking them the whole song and I didn't even lose my multiplier even though I spent the whole level like this. Also, instead of dying, she gets transformed into a bat, which gives her flight, four damage, heals her every five kills and lets her see every enemy in the level.
The more you unlock the easier the game gets--but yeah, most runs for me are "did I get a weapon that leta me attack from 2 spaces away? No? ... then I'm dead."
Thank you so much for the shoutout again Spooty. It was completely unexpected and it made an amazing week even better. You were spectacular, especially for a marathon run, and I hope I get to meet you guys again at a future GDQ ;w;
It took me SOO many attempts to get through zone 4 with Arya. This shit is just ridiculous. Its cool to see a game at GDQ that is pure skill rather than a glitch fest.
what an awesome run!! spooty's always challenging himself and going above and beyond, his runs are always such a treat to watch. shame we didn't get to see king conga at all though, he's my favorite boss and especially fun on double time
This is already bordeline impossible - but I'm even more impressed that he's able to talk while playing. My rhythm completely breaks down when I try and have a conversation while playing.
Then he would be a true god among rappers. It seems that the highest WPM (words per minute) ever rapped is 280, which is still slower than some parts of this game and those songs are rehearsed. Besides that, the second highest is 212 and it quickly decreases to 140 WPM. I looked it up because I found the premise interesting as well.
I can't imagine how fast your brain has to go to keep up with this mode. My brain hurts just watching it. Huge respect to runner- this is fucking incredible.
To anyone who has not played this game, when you play as Koda, two fourth-zone enemies change: the ooze golems only ooze one tile, instead of every time you hit them, because of how often it creates impossible situations; and normally fourth-floor bats move every beat, which often makes them impossible to even go near safely. If you really want to see how terrifying fourth-zone is when not toned down, watch an Aria run. Although, the deadly gold & doubled speed make this truly astonishing anyways.
@@_CNT_ in his defense this was changed in the DLC, so if he never got Amplified, it would be impossible to know unless he looked it up for whatever reason

The runner asked that person to commentate so he wouldn't have to during the run. If he wanted him to be quiet he would have said so, and the runner has stated that he had no issues with it.
And you don't seem to understand how AGDQ works: Commentator mic's are (most of th time) lowered on Runner plays. What's more, the runner knows his friend better than us: if he wanted something else, he would have told him or even ask for a non commentary run.
One guy talking about something he knows he doesn't need to listen to is probably easier to ignore than unpredictable clapping and cheering from a large audience.
And you really think he was talking to the couch telling them to shut up when asking for silence during the run? Even if he didn't have their audio off in his headset, which is possible, he was 100% in on the couch doing exactly what they're there to do in the first place. Honestly are people this dumb you need to point out "your friend was talking" like he didn't know that. Yes obviously he was, so MAAAYBEEE it was totally intentional and known from the start from everyone included?
The no game sound + the keyboard clicking sound is extremely annoying and gets worse with time. Please take that into consideration next time this game shows up.
Same as The Ghost, I was able to hear the game sound and beat just fine. But then again, the "levels of sounds" vary from one headset to another (etc.) and even on a same headset, som people configure them differently. For instance, you can configure your headset to hear voices clearer because voices are generaly on a different level than most sounds. So I'm not saying you're wrong, just that you had "no luck" in this. Then again, it was a beat game: of course hearing the game is important but it's hard for the runner to make sure he hears his clicking to help him while still being able to talk so we can hear him.
if they were playing an easier character, it would be a problem. But with Coda? not a character to play for a marathon. they also don't have infinite time, so runners really can't just screw up big time halfway though a run then restart from the beginning.
Coda doesn't have a character-specific final boss. Technical difficulties are out of the runner's control. The "copouts" are just safety saves and this is without question the hardest run ever showcased at a GDQ. The TGM run from a few years ago is the only one that even comes close.
With the amount of focus and skill required to seriously do a complete run of this, it’s completely understandable. While it does mean it’s not really a full speedrun, these types of runs always felt more of a showcase than a full run (like that one stepmania segment they had a few years back) due to the sheer skill and randomness of the game. Even if he didn’t get the full run, he still made it pretty damn far and he definitely deserves credit for being able survive that long.
This is straight up one of the hardest runs of any game, to the point where SB is the only person we know has ever done it, and he’s can’t replicate it with any consistency
Time? That wasn't even an all-levels run, half-way through they switched to single-level, and then never finished level 4, opting to do a boss practice to "progress" the "run". This shouldn't even be called a run, but rather just an exhibition.
I mean, playing as Coda is already hard enough to go through, but limiting yourself to no item pickups just destroys any chance of this being marathon safe.
try doing this yourself and you will understand how hard it can be to keep the beat going for so long while each stage has different beats and bosses can have several gimmicks attached, all while not picking up any weapons and other gear that can really help. also, do it all in under 30 minutes.
He did a coda run at AGDQ in 2016 successfully, but doing it with low% is so hard that apparently he's only managed to pull it off in practice a few times out of thousands of attempts, and no one else has ever done it.
Even with as good of a player as Spooty is, Coda low% is almost impossible. It's just unreasonable to expect him to do a full all-zones run, especially after what happened here.

Still an impressive run considering just how utterly hard the game is in general.
Just watch his non low% runs.
yeah but he's actually not doing the "impossible" anymore when he uses the single zone mode.
this was an Insane run. sucks with all the hicups that happened, but still; being able to keep those different beats for so long is not easy.
