      I agree, that's a good idea but it would be tough to film. Even with a filter the light would block what we want to see. And if the filter is too dark then you cant see anything at all!

    There's no such thing as "pure steel." Steel is an alloy. By definition, an impure substance.

      Ido Keren so is there a pure metal?

    • @oxOsicknessOxo
      @oxOsicknessOxo 7 лет назад +8

      Only if it is an element, like Iron, Aluminum, copper, etc. But even then, what is used is usually an alloy where the element is predominant like aluminum is the predominant metal in the aluminum alloy used it can also contain manganese, zinc, copper, silicon, magnesium, tin, etc.

    • @Leli196
      @Leli196 7 лет назад +4

      Of course there is pure steel. Everything can be pure (e.g. pure fruit juice vs. fruit juice with sugar or flavor added)

    • @oxOsicknessOxo
      @oxOsicknessOxo 7 лет назад +24

      There is no pure steel, that comparison was pretty awful. Pure metal are elements, go check a periodic table. Steel is an alloy which is made of Iron and other elements...

    • @Cptn-Coconut

    why not synchronize multiple slow motion cameras and interpolate the image to get 1 million frames?

    • @jn6530
      @jn6530 7 лет назад +9

      it'd be incredibly difficult to offset the recording of multiple cameras by so little. they'd also then have to reorganize each individual frame probably

      Most software for large machinery like this still runs on Windows XP because it is custom made software, and if it works, it works, so they don't really have a reason to upgrade.

    I do like the detail you touched on at the end there, about how fast the break happens even your slowmo ain't slow enough. Very cool!

    • @vincentrobinette1507

      It's a lot like shattering tempered glass. It happens so fast, no camera can capture the propagation rate of the cracks.

      You can actually get tensile testing machines which are hand turned, obviously you'd use considerably smaller test specimens in them though, but this would be fun to try and hand turn 😂

    • @willybee3056
      @willybee3056 5 лет назад +8

      It would be a twist on,,, give me a long enough lever, and a fulcrum to put it on and will move the world...
      So a child could hand crank the machine. . If he could keep at it long enough.😉
      But he probably wouldn't be a child when it finally broke..

    I’d love to see this experiment again but with infrared slow motion. When is the heat generated? Are there spikes in the heat when it breaks? It would be cool to reverse slow mo and watch the bars cool down. You could even throw in a Schlerin (sp?) image setup. I bet a ton of people would love to see all that in one more pull test.
