They were brought over as food and as messagers by the European colonists in the 17th century. All the feral ones we have today are descendants of escapees. Most people I tell this assumed they were indigenous to the US. Considering they were used for messaging, they're pretty intelligent, and are pretty docile. My cousin's aunt has a pigeon coop, along with chickens and peacocks. I always found pigeons pretty chill. Fun fact: the US military sold it's last homing pigeon in 1957.
Very well informed video for many! Thank you for taking the time to compile all this information into one video for new (pet) pigeon owners or people researching into it😊. Me and my pet humans are certain it will help many people (and pigeons)🥰. I myself do go out on a special harness (my pet human aka dad designed with over a year of research and development), but we often have to explain to people on our trips when they are recommending places 'I "need" to visit"' what the dangers are for us pigeons in certain area's (like the predators you mentioned). Luckily her in our region it's not that bad, but many people highly underestimate those risks. Then there are also lots of people whom often say: "Ohh she's on a leash?? Well I often see this guy/woman with his/her parrot at the park and they don't use a leash!"... Then yet again we have to explain how dangerous freeflying is (even with a recall trained bird). And then again we also have to explain that I won't fly away, that I AM recall trained, but that the leash is for my own safety (and then try to explain it a bit with comparing to a dog for them). There is SOOOO little people know about us pigeons and what awesome companions we can be 🥰. So yet again thank you for putting the time and effort into this video for people to learn from😊 and of course congrats on your 50K followers🥰 Much Love, Sophie The Pigeon🕊🪶
