- Things are coming together, folks. The Kentucky basketball roster is up to nine and the staff is up to four, just a few key pieces here and there to close things out for Mark Pope’s first official ride in Lexington.
Two of the newest pieces? Dayton sharpshooter Koby Brea and West Virginia playmaker Kerr Kriisa, top backcourt targets for Pope out of the portal that are now signed, sealed and delivered. What’s next? Well, it starts with star talent - and the Wildcats are fortunately positioned well for at least one of those.

Pretty sure we have has teams like that last year & time & time again....its not a receipe for success
I love the way this roster is coming together. I think we have solid, tough guys. I'm trying to imagine all of these strangers showing up for the first practices. Hopefully, they can develop chemistry, which is the secret sauce that makes good teams great. Really appreciate your in-depth analysis and commentaries. My gut feeling tells me that the program is moving in the right direction.
Since you brought him up. I was a Cal guy from day one even wanted him when they hired Billy G. That being said it was definitely time for a change. The only problem I had was the fake interview with Mitch until he told the recruit that Cal university had only changed locations. Not only did he think he was bigger than the program, he already thinks he's bigger than Arkansas without even coaching a single game.
I’m excited about Pope and this roster. And I’ll tell you why. 1: experience, I got sick and tired of seeing freshman fold when it counted. 2: X’s and O’s, I got tired of us relying on talent to just do their thing. 3: Playing for the school. I got tired of just being an nba draft first school.

@@LsXnation.WFOArmyI don’t think he’s going after the “big time players” who are looking for individual success and a pay day. He came up with some really tough and talented veterans who are willing to play defense and learn a system to win games instead of making highlight reels. Johnell Davis and the like can take them big ol gawdy necklaces on down to Arkansas with the hawgs ya see? Much more excited to see some actual basketball being played and the coach talking X’s and O’s and accountability than having videos of bench players pop up on my RUclips going to get their diamonds tested. Like, I get it. Somebody gave you a little bit of money. Go hit the weights though. Try some lateral drills. Go study the play book and learn how to set a decent screen for goodness sake. Y’all want to get paid, time to stop acting like little boys and goofing off!
They didn’t game plan, they didn’t practice, just roll the ball out there and have fun! For the last few years everybody just relaxing, enjoying their time at the Boca Del Cal Resort and Individual Workout Salon and Health Spa.
Pope is doing a great job in the transfer portal. Experience players who started for other college teams. Pope will prove the doubters wrong. He will make Kentucky basketball fun to watch.

Cal shunned Thiero this year. Edwards had a terrible season yet Cal decided to start and play him over Adou. He saw the floor when Mitchell went down but still, I don’t understand why he decided to rock with a coach that has not utilized him to his full potential.
He just signed with Arkansas, genius.

Well unfortunately, he will be held to the same standard as Cal. His 1 win in the tourney will get him put squarely on the hot seat....coaching change was to get a coach BETTER than cal. And there arent rebuilding years.
@@C-Wiggz-859 I can’t speak for the whole fanbase, but I can speak for myself. Cal didn’t live up to my standards on how he conducted himself on and off the court. Fortunately Pope has conducted himself to my standards thus far, and I am willing to give him time to meet the standards on the court.
Pope has done a good job so far, but we need a few more pieces to the puzzle in order for it to work. As far as Thiero going to Arkansas, it just proves what some of us have known all along.............Cal wanted players loyal to him, not to the university.

Im impressed with john walls loyalty to UK and BBN. Is there consideration for him to have a coaching or recruiting role?
I think we have a go to guy in this mix somewhere already. They will emerge.
Something about Brandon Garrison is you wont see it much just watching his highlights, but what I think Pope really loved about him is his ability to pass the ball and how good he can handle the ball too at his size. I watched the game BYU at Oklahoma State and BYU lost but you could see Brandon Garrison and how well he passed the ball on the floor, he passes like a guard does and him being just a freshman last season you can tell he has such a high ceiling. Im thinking He could make a jump into his sophomore season this year and could potentially end up being a really good player for UK. If he happens to comeback and play a 3rd year we have to keep him because I can see him being a star player within the next season or two. He is better than his numbers indicate and it shows how pope is building a roster rather than just going after a bunch of random good players. He understands roster construction. That's for sure.
I'd say Travis Perry is the sleeper...your talking a guy that's in the only I believe 10 guys in basketball history that's in the 5,000 points club...
Thanks Jack and Shawn. Am I way off base in my thinking that Pope needs one or two freshmen to blow up and be one and done? My thought is that will show HS kids that they can still get to the NBA (and quickly) by playing at UK in Pope's system, which will then allow Pope to get one or two impact freshmen per year.
Also - with portal and NIL is it still possible to get a young guy and develop him over two or three years? Or will those guys simply bolt after one year and develop somewhere else, while we sign portal guys who did the same thing but at other programs?
I still think Great would have a larger role here then he thinks but it is what it is. All the guys going back to Cal will be sitting behind freshman again next year so good luck to them.

I been asking myself why Pope didn't land players like Johnell Davis? Arkansas out spent us on Davis, because Cal had the NIL money, and I believe we didn't have or couldn't afford that much on just one player because, I believe Pope spend most if not all his NIL money on his first 9 players, and that's understandable after all this is Pope's first year, and he had to put a full winning Rolster together in just a few days from the portal. Let me add Pope did a great job with this Rolster considering his time frame. I can't wait when Pope has a whole year to recruit, and he has already started recruiting for 2026.
You know Shawn got me thinking. Year one is just another year of one and dones. We have a team full of 1 year left in their eligibility. So year two will be the same as year one. You can't say the pressure is not there in year one. Kentucky is expected to win no matter what year. Thats why we put pressure on Cal to achieve now or leave. Mark Pope expects to win now!! If we dont, he will be the most upset coach in the nation, because he is Kentucky.

Constructive criticism idea. Instead of doing hour long and sometimes hour plus podcasts. Do 2-3 a week 30-45 mins to cut down on the filler and rambling and filibustering to fill time to the next ad read. Quality over quantity! I realize more pods perr week is quantity, but you know what I mean!

If UK gets Robinson does that move them into a solid top 25? They already there? I think this team will surprise many. They will win games, a chance at the SEC and a seed into the Tourney is not out of the realm of possibility.
Wagner will end up at Arkansas.I think Cal has players hold out on committing like Adou and Wagner so they can get other guys to commit.
Adou is going to have to get it out of his head that he’s a ball handler. He has potential at the 4 if he keeps developing his shot, but that nba line is going to be another step back from college. But…cal and them boys is hawgs now. Rivals. Let’s give em no quarter!!!
I agree. I just think Adou was never a Big Game Player. On offseason international trips, he excelled, but he disappeared over the years in actual games.

Man go watch all Otega video from all year like the 34 min video he averaged 15 points a game through like the first 15 if he can shoot 38-40 percent from deep he will take a giant step he is the best athlete on this team even if you get Chaz and Jaxson he drives the ball so well his defense is elite if he can get a more consistent deep shot he can be all Sec and can make this team 5 times better and if that happens and you get Chaz and or Jaxson then we have a chance at a final 4 this team as constructed has a high ceiling but I don’t think the top 10 unless Andrew and Otega take a step in March with this system and defense then could make some noise but I wouldn’t expect them to be a final 4 team but you get those 2 or even just one there a real chance at having a magical first year or the Pope then next year bring back all the freshman with Otega and Brandon get 2 five stars which I totally believe Mark and Alvin will Maybe a portal piece or 2 then we’re pre season top 5 we get to the second weekend year one I wouldn’t be happy but I’d understand and I’d be excited for the next year and then we’re off and running on a every year top 10 program like Cal had but with a mix of talent and skill with some real leadership and experience

His team so far is a C, and the deal and the standard is top 3 in sec & tourney bid past 2 games. If he doesnt do that then his job should be on the hot seat. Not going to lower standards for a former transfer player to be coach. We will see soon....

I know that you guys hate your jobs right now. You have to pretend that the roster that Mark Poop is doing a good job of putting together his roster. Is this the best Poop can do with all the NIL money that was given to him? There isn't an UK caliber player on the ENTIRE roster. And Poop's system is for unathletic players who depend almost totally on three point shooting, much like traditional Vandy and BYU teams. This roster is HORRIBLE!
Define UK roster talent? Do we need to look back at past teams who won championships with guys who weren't 5 stars? Have you noticed the success UCONN and others have had with less talent than what UK has had in the last 15yrs? Cal gave us a natty and was a first round bust in the NIT the following season. Again, you know nothing. Keep being clever and calling Pope "poop" though.
@@hdnw7537 But UCONN had some talent. Do you really seen any potential of this roster making the NCAA or NIT tournament this season? Do you really think that players on the roster are decent players? At the very least Cal can't coach, but there was always potential because he could recruit. But it is apparent that Mark Poop can't coach, look at his coaching body of work in a weak conference, and now we know he can't recruit even with the money that Cal was denied by Barnhart and the boostes.
@@hdnw7537 Be honest, do you think that a good coach would have as rough of a time signing quality players as Mark Poop is having at UK? Billy Donovan, Bruce Pearl, Nate Oats, or even Pitino would have gotten a number of top incoming high school players and top 10 players from the transfer portal. Koby Brea is a good role player coming off the bench, but the rest of the squad isn't a good reflection of how well Poop can recruit players. Cal can't coach, but he can recruit. Mark Poop has proven that he can't do either.
@@hdnw7537 Mark Poop will have a hard time recruiting decent players, despite the large amount of NIL money he has been given to work with and the exposure at UK, because of his style of player. Poop's style of play is designed for non-athletic slow players who can shoot. Players like Cameron Mills and Kellan Grady. A head coaching job at Vandy would be more Mark Poop's speed.
@@hdnw7537 If you were a kid with NBA potential, would you risk your chances of being a lottery pick by playing in Poop's system? When you hear that a team shoots a lot of 3s you already know that they do so to compensate for a lack of talent and athleticism.
Poop is funny, very intelligent, and a nice guy, but he is not a good coach and poor recruiter. At least UofL didn't already know that Kenny Payne wasn't a good coach before they hired him. UK has given him too much NIL money not to land a single five star player. I am sure that a number of top players would have decommitted from other program to come to UK if a good coach was hired. And I am sure that a number of the top players in the transfer portal would have committed also. The roster is made up of bench warmers who transferred from mediocre teams. After Poop is fired, I believe that Barnhart's services will no longer be needed at UK. Barnhart has setup Poop and UK for failure.
