  • On October 19th, Netflix announced the worldwide release date for the long awaited Punisher series: November 17th of 2017 - the same date that Justice League also is due to be released in theaters.
    In this editorial, @AndreEinherjar will give his take on what the rationale behind that decision might be, and who might be responsible for it. Before that though, context will be provided awe look back at two past instances where Marvel and DC release dates also clashed, and the competetive releationship between Marvel and DC.
    Why the first week of May is the sweet spot for summer blockbusters:

      I think what people above all forgetting is how packed the Marvel schedule for this month is...Thor got just released, Inhumans had its season finale yesterday (not that anybody cared, but it would have been inopportune to drop the Punisher on the same day nevertheless), and then there is the premiere for Runaways and the series premier two-parter for Agents of Shield (which looks epic based on the trailer) towards the end of the month/early december. So either they release Punisher next Friday, or they have to wait until Christmas, and I can't think of a show which would fit worse into the season. I don't think that this is a case of Marvel trying to rain into DC's parade, this is a case of Marvel having to juggle their various properties in a way that all of them get as much attention as possible.

    The real question is - why has WB embargoed Justice League reviews until the last minute? Is it because the movie is going to be another dumpster fire like BvS and SS?

      50/50. Remember that Wonder Woman got an embargo very similar but it still turned out pretty good. Which kind of doesn't make any sense though since the film was clearly competently made and well executed.
      The official reviews aren't out know, but word of mouth is that Justice League is fun and good, but nothing too special or transcendental. It seems Wonder Woman was basically what people expected JL to be like in terms of quality, while JL is something along the lines of Dr. Strange or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 quality wise.

    • @NiiRubra
      @NiiRubra 6 лет назад +3

      Maybe the reason why they embargoed the Wonder Woman reviews was to stay consistent. You know, to give off the impression that Warner will do that for every single DC movie that comes out, regardless of their actual quality, when in reality the true purpose of those embargos is to hide problems with their movies, but I guess they can afford to stay consistent with the embargos in case the movie is actually a hit.

    Funny thing: Back in the 90s i was an DC-only comic-book-reader.. I loved the Keaton-Batman-movies, and even Batman Forever was "okay" (just try to blend out all the neon-lights, and it is not as bad, as some people say...). However, Since Marvel went into the big pictures (starting with X-Men, and Spider-man, and later on with Iron Man to start the MCU) I was instantly in love with that universe. Granted the 90's Batman was amazing, and I`ll never let anybody shit on the Keaton/Burton movies, but the Marvel-movies were... well, better, in a cinematic universe. I know that Toby's Spider-Man movies, and the Y-Men-movies aren't part of the DCu, but they felt, like they could've been a part of a bigger "thing". The 90`s Batman-movies were selfcontained. Yeah, there's the "why Superman works alone"-line, and the namedrop of Metropolis, but that's it.
    To summorize:
    Marvel should make more movies, and try to connect the series with the movies, and DC should stuckto animated series, like the 90`s Batman, and Justice League.

      +woodblock707 Yes but moody Cap wasn't the first and only thing we have ever seen Cap do was it? We got to see him be more his iconic self. Get to know and like him. So when he was then moody over Bucky we could get behind him and understand why. They didn't just straight away for two films have him moping around and expect us to find it interesting or give a damn. As with everything in the DC movies, it's rushed without earning it. Marvel had a team of superheroes unite to fight CGI invaders so why hasn't it worked for DC? Because they haven't worked up to it or earnt it. Just tosses it out before even allowing us to get to know half the characters let alone care.

      So you see, it's not about instant gratification, it's about people's plans on that night, by offering an alternative, Marvel might be able to steal some attention away from DC on the opening night of their big movie.

    I think the same day thing is not to hurt the box office, but to hurt reviews. The close release dates might force reviewers to draw comparisons, and if Punisher is good enough, reviews might go "Watch Punisher instead" (It happened with Daredevil 2 and BvS, but those shared the same topic of hero vs hero to a degree, and JL and Punisher doesn't seem to have anything in common, but the same date might be a good enough common point)

Even Joss /wedon could have the entire movie rewritten he wouldn't have been able to recast it or have all the previously established DCEU versions of the characters inexplicably pull a 180 and be the polar opposites of themselves.

    If they pushed the release back because of the Las Vegas shooting, that was the only viable release date. They didn't want to compete with Stranger Things or Thor. The 23rd is Thanksgiving and then you're into the Holiday Season. So unless they wanted to delay the release to next year, the 17th was the only date they could choose.

    Ever consider they're trying to bury The Punisher? There's a reason the release date was delayed -- mass shootings. It could be counterprogramming, but I get the feeling that Marvel and Netflix would like to see the show quietly die.
    Heck, I didn't even know the show had a release date til you told me.

    Maybe Marvel/Netflix are still worried the gun violence in Punisher will be controversial, so they're releasing it against Justice League in the hopes that JL, whether it sucks or not, successful or not, is more newsworthy and diverts attention and entertainment thinkpieces.

    Hi there, I was stating my personal opinion about Marvel and DC, I watched the classic Batman and Superman movies, and the television shows; I’ve watched Marvel’s TV series, ( Spiderman, Captain America, Incredible Hulk, and etc.) granite Warner Brothers, Sony, and Fox 🦊. Produced a number of them in the old days and into the mid90s into the early 2000’s they made a lot of mistakes too. Zac Snyder get a different version of Superman’s Origin story, Christopher Nolan did a completely different version to Batman story. The DC extended universe, was an interesting 💡, And I do believe that Warner Brothers tried to copy Marvel Studios idea 💡. But I also think 💭, in Time they’ll do an Excellent job on creating their movie universe.

    1-Battlefront 2 missed the Nintendo Switch, witch in the console space was the biggest breakout success this year. With around 8 million units sold already in it's first year it's outpacing the Xbox One, and Nintendo 3DS, within the aligned time frame. Missing that system will hurt.
    2-The Game sucks because of horrible micro transactions and loot boxes leaving the game horribly unbalanced. This circulated online and they're currently facing a PR nightmare of a lifetime over that. EA was playing PR on reddit and got the most down voted comment, of all time when defending that stuff.
    3-According to Daniel Ahmed (ZhurgeEX on twitter) a reliable games industry analysis and insider, Battlefront 2's pre-order sales were very bad, because of the controversy. It's legs are going to be cut short
    That game is a mess. And isn't going to have the impact on a theatrical release that it otherwise would have if it came out on actually every platform, and wasn't a money grab abyss.

    Punisher is a movie where a gun nut suffering from extreme PTSD goes off on a gun fueled murder rampage. How many gun massacres have there been in America in since the first Punisher trailer was dropped?
    Releasing Punisher at the same time as Justice League means flying under public media radar. It means Punisher isn't likely to be as caught up in the national debate about Gun Violence and Gun Culture as it would be if released almost any other day.

    I think the true answer is less nefarious, just as calculated, and has much less to do with Justice League. It has much more to do with retail channels, marketing static, and general shopping habits in North America leading into Christmas. Without getting too deep in the woods with the reasoning, any adverting for ANYTHING during the week of Thanksgiving (Nov. 23) through Jan2, will be 1. Expensive 2. Have to cut through the white noise of all other marketing. 3. Is better used to pay for shelfspace(actually and figuratively for digital). Most media must be on the shelf (actually and figuratively for digital) or have that shelf space paid for (reserved) before Oct1 unless you want to wait till February to release. So, you want to have it out before Thanksgiving. You want it out for a weekend. You don't want to cross the streams with Stranger Things 2.... November, the weekend before Thanksgiving and Black Friday media frenzy... done.

    Also, The Punisher wasn't going to release on Nov 17th at all initially. Why did you fail to mention that the original release date was in October, but because of the Las Vegas massacre, they pushed the date back so as not to be associated with the shooting. At the time, I said it was dumb to change the date because in America there's always going to be another Mass shooting, and sure enough we just had another church mass shooting. So, in reality they probably chose the new release date of Nov 17th so they would look no more bad than DC/WB for releasing an action packed property so close to a horrific event. Strange that you'd leave all that out, when Netflix announced that the Oct date was changed specifically for that reason...

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 6 лет назад

      More likely they chose the new release date because last week was Thor week, this week the season finale of Inhumans was on, and the week after Now 17th Runaways gets its premiere. And the week after AoS has its two hour season premiere. Which would put the next available date smack into the Christmas time, and I can't think of a more unfitting moment to air something like The Punisher.

    These are some good points that make up some good strategies on Disney's part. I only wish that Marvel/Disney were this cutthroat towards Fox when it comes to getting their rights back to F4 at least. Shit the way Fox and Sony treats more than half the Marvel film's they release. It's burning out portions of CBM craze anyway.

    Am watching Punisher. Will wait for the reviews before i watch Justice League as ive been dissapointed to often with their movies. So watch all of Punisher and then maybe JL on the Sunday night. Thing is it wont matter either way. If your more of a DC fan then you will watch a few Punisher episodes and then off to the cinema for JL and then watch the rest of Punisher later. Punisher will always be there - its not like you can only watch one or the other. Or if you watch JL then netflix deletes Punisher off your account.

    i already knew that DC was playing chicken with Marvel in regards to the release date of BvS and the untitled Marvel film that would end up being Civil War. But I didn't even think about the reason that standoff existed. I totally overlooked the significance of that release date. And that is yet another reason I like Midnight's Edge. They put seemingly random and idiotic logic in appropriate lighting so that it makes sense. I can understand why DC tried to throw their balls on the table with that move now. For the longest I thought they were just trying to flex for the public and back Marvel out of a release date just to show the world who is the new big kid in town.

    I don't understand the problem here. Yes, the fan bases are largely overlapped, but they're two different mediums. One is a 2-3 hour movie where you have to go at a specific time and sit through the whole thing in the theater. One is a series on a streaming service that you can watch literally any time you feel like it and you can pause whenever you want/need to. I don't see a competition here. If you're planning on going to the theater friday night at 7 to watch Justice League, then a netflix show that drops that night isn't going to keep you from going to the theater.
