    the arrogance and stupidly deep politics was somewhat warranted. can you imagine having to oversee all time? even the most minor word at one point in time or another could send galaxies to war or save so many they literally cant be counted. their existence would have been horrible when you think about the unfathomable responsibility they had, the deep regimentation of their society and government really stikes me as a desperate move to not get it wrong.

      It's true. There once was a guy that said something and a time vortex opened up and sent those words across a computer screen that started a vast war between two massive battle fleets. When they realized that neither side had said it, they put aside their differences, and went to punish the one that said it. When they arrived they discovered that they had made a miscalculation in sizes, and were promptly swallowed by a small dog.

    the part about their DNA changing maybe faulty. In the episode arc of infinity it was mentioned that their biodata is kept on file so this will entail that their DNA remains uniform at least on some level.
    lastly never like concept of the looms, just makes them sink to the level of sontarons. even the doctor himself referred to his family on 3 seperate occasions in three different episodes . timelords society seems to be modeled after Spartans, where children were property of the state so they were put under their aegis , but family units were still maintained

However, visionaries like the Doctor and other Timelord 'renegades' brought a little life to the cobwebs of Timelord Society. Rassilon said, "A billion years of Time Lord history riding on our backs".

    • @davidwarren7279
      @davidwarren7279 6 лет назад +9

      So, Collin Baker says, "ten million years of absolute power" and Rassiolon says, "a billion years of Time Lord history". Perhaps Rassilon was referring to how old the Gallifreyan race was back in his day (forgetting that he has been "asleep"/dead for a long time), and perhaps the Doctor was referring to the time since Rassilon (i.e. the time that they have been TIME LORDS for).
      Alternatively, I believe that Gallifrey exists in "inner-time" and the rest of the universe are in "outer-time", much in the same way that we talk about outer space and inner space. This could mean that whilst the Time Lords are only ten million or a billion years old (in terms of inner time) they have been interacting with more than a billion years worth of outer time.
      Finally, the Time Lords were active in the "Dark Times", having destroyed the Racnoss approximately 4.6 billion years ago, and the Vampires at a similar time. Whilst this implies that they are far older than a billion years, the above paragraph demonstrates how this might not be the case.

    Speaking of Regenerations....
    Even from what little lore I myself recall, Rassilon was the first Gallefreyan Time-Lord (or at least the first to claim the title) & 'true' immortal; he bargained with Death to allow his people (the Time-Lords) only 12 regenerations, as nothing escapes Death, not even Time. Rassilon agreed & entombed himself (see The Five Doctors), setting the trap those who came seeking immortality.
    However, Time-Lord technology could provide additional regenerations, even a full cycle of 12, but only under specific circumstances (of which were never revealed). The Doctor received this new cycle near the end of The Time of The Doctor.
    The Master may have likewise received a new regeneration cycle, but it's unrevealed how many are left after his rebirth from The War Master/Professor Yana to Harold Saxon & then to his/her 'Missy' incarnation.

    There is also a process called 'looming' where to be Time Lords go into pods where they 'loom'. Basically going from a normal gallifreyan to getting regenerative powers and becoming a Time Lord.

  • @blackphoenix77
    @blackphoenix77 7 лет назад +54

    I think it was a mistake for Moffat to completely rule out Looms, and as this was stated in Doctor Who Magazine and never addressed on the show, I tend to ignore it. It can be easily reconciled with the new series: maybe the Time Lord elite use the Looms to make new Time Lords, while regular Gallifreyans have children in the normal way. Lungbarrow showed that natural childbirth had come back to Gallifrey, but maybe the High Council continued using the Looms in order to insure "genetic purity" in the Time Lord elite.

The Pythia, the most powerful of oracles cursed all of gallifrey to sterility(if memory serves, haven't read it since the 90's) for the crime of time travel. I think it was a dying curse, and you know how those go lol. After that, no baby would be born naturally on gallifrey, hence the looms. Not sure why they went that way but the Pythia was a nasty piece of work so she probably cursed the use of artificial woumbs too somehow.

    As with the Vulcans, Logic can often lead to the philosophy of religions. However, philosophy and dogma are two different things. Dogma often, almost invariably, ruins philosophy, if allowed to. Truth and rational thought can counteract this, if corruption, rhetoric and propaganda hasn't already undermined the masses.

  • @kannathraymaker

    A very nice job. My only point of contention was when you said they "resurrected" Rassilon. Rassilon was in stasis available to be awoken in case of great need, but if you woke attempted to wake him just to exploit his power (as Barusa discovered at the end of serial "The Five Doctors") you got absorbed into the machine yourself. Rassallon and Omega (and their generation of Time Lords) didn't have a limitation on the number of time they could regenerate - Rassilon introduced a virus that caused the limitation. And (whether the writers meant this or not) Rassilon was in charge when both the Doctor and the Master were granted what amounts to unlimited regenerations.

    • @danivarius

      But if it's true that the Rassilon Generation (Gen-R? 😜) have unlimited regenerations then wouldn't The Doctor already have them? (Considering the "Cartmel Master Plan" and The Other.)
      In effect, the light that they sent through the crack at Trenzalore was just a bright torch. Typical bloody Time Lords, make it look and sound impressive when it's actually not.

    • @shauntempley9757
      @shauntempley9757 3 года назад +1

      @@EthanKristopherHartley Well, the Doctor is one of only Four Timelords that survived the Schism Ritual. There is heavy evidence that this ritual gave the four unlimited regenerations, except that Gallifrey limits the cycles to 12, and has to grant them when they run out. Think of Gallifrey as a location that gives them out in batches of 12.
      But only for these four, besides Rassilon and Omega.
      However, full control of regenerations could only come from Looming.

      In the very first story, An Unearthly Child, Susan says something like they come from the 55th century. However, this is long before the concept of a Time Lord, regeneration or Galifrey were introduced.

    If you write a program that paints one picture, you're the creator of that picture. A computer program created by a human is as good as a book, or a poem, or a painting created by a human. It takes knowledge and skill to write, paint, or code.

      They are the same species, and Karn is (or was) in an adjacent star system to Gallifrey. Considering the incredible age of their species, it is highly likely that Karn was one of their first interstellar colonies in eons past. While the Sisters used the Elixir in lieu of regeneration, they understood the mechanics of regeneration well enough to control the result of it. Unlike the Time Lords, they focus on developing their psychic powers rather than technology.

    Probably the most important creation of the Time Lords is the Great Eye of Harmony, source of all their power and linchpin of the Web of Time itself. Second would be the Web of Time, the meta-structure the Time Lords imposed on the Universe as "official history". Third would be the Matrix and fourth TARDISes.

    As a fellow Whovian I thought perhaps if it's not too much trouble if you could consider making another Doctor Who culture index video only this time focusing on the Daleks seeing as they are the evil counterparts to the Time lords and because you have done many videos on the Star trek aliens I though maybe you should consider expanding on you Whovian audiences interests but if you find it to be too much for your schedule then no harm done.

    I wonder how familiar Jodie Whittaker was with the history and significance of the "Time Lord" vs. "Time Lady" title when she answered a fan's question in an interview, or whether it was something the writers/producers had discussed with her beforehand. (She said her Doctor would be called a Time Lord.) The modern series does seem to use "Timelord" more generically, and implied with Missy that "Time Lady" has fallen out of use, but I wonder if she/they understood how much they were putting in the canon with that statement. I know I don't.

    Given the disclosure of the heritage of the Doctor's mother, the Timelord may have experimented with mixing their bloodlines with other races. One of the only race which seems to be the rivals of the Timelords is the human race. The Human race have master time travel by themselves. The Timelords were likely aware of the Human Race mastering time travel.
    The Timelords could have work with the human race when it comes to time travel. Somehow due to some reasons like pride may have prevented the Timelords from working with the humans. Eventually, the Human race became the new masters of time.

      Canon in Doctor Who is tricky, especially with Gallifrey. Looms or natural birth ? Is the Doctor half human or a mystical, non Gallifreyan being as old as Time Lords society ? Are the Chapters never mentinoned on screen even canon ?
      In the end, the Timeless Children didn't change a lot of thing, except it made some Classic series and extended universe lore canon again, plus adding a bit more to anciant Gallifreyan history.

    Can you answer the following questions about Time Lords given they have traveled to the earliest moments of the past to the end of time: (1) If Gallifrey was destroyed in the latest season, why didn't the Time Lords know this and take steps to stop the Master from doing his naughty deeds? (2) When Dr. Who started up again with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor he said he was the last of the Time Lords and was alone in the Universe. This continued to hold true for the next several incarnations of the Doctor. HOWEVER: If Time Lords can be found all throughout the time stream, then the Chris Eccleston Doctor as well as the others should have been bumping into other Time Lords in different periods of time. After all, the Doctor seems to repeatedly bump into another incarnation of himself (or herself). Thus, the Chris Eccleston Doctor could never have been alone in the Universe.

      Ye but those are in the past
      Most of the Time Lords he came across in the series either died later on, were banished or died during the Time War
      The Doctor tries not to encounter already dead Time Lords
      Plus the Time Lords time locked the war so no one can get in or out unless if it's convenient to the plot
      Plus they don't look into their own time stream unless if someone tries to mess with it

    They were at the top of their universe. Outside of their universe there were vastly superior beings though. Ones that were beyond simple technology. Even though timelord tech did have an affect to a degree. A being like a 'Guardian of Time' was too powerful for a timelord. Then there's the mysterious 'The Grace' whom stand above the Guardians. We know next to nothing about them. Only that they created the Key to Time, which is the essential embodiment of the Guardians being.
