Walt Whitman theater, between 46st +47th street, on Westfield Ave. Hung out with my still lifelong friends there for many yrs. Long live Otis Westfield (aka Jimmy Stuart R.I.P.) The wall, Vince’s, the Rexall...Doc and Caesar, and the mat on many a cold night. Nobody beats O.W. Boys. Peace, Rocky.
My husband was from North Camden and I met him when I worked on weekends (for the regular cashier on breaks) at the Arlo. I also did the same for the Broadway and the one down the street from the Arlo. They were run by the Varbalow company. Michael Landon's father worked for the company. Back then it was safe to walk on the streets of Camden. I wouldn't do it today. Memories are great!
There's all this culture and history in Jersey. Was an altogether awesome place to go to school. Giant be wishes for residents to see opportunities in all areas of OUR great country and state. The classics would only have it that way.
The Walt Whitman in Pennsauken - truly a spectacular building - the inside was amazing. I spent a lot of my youth seeing films there. My children think it's amazing that I saw Jaws the summer it came out - there. What a tragedy that they let the building be demolished
I'm from Camden NJ and some of these buildings are still there, like the Star and there is another one further up on Broadway, but I can't think of the name, and there's the North Camden which is now a church in North Camden
what a wonderful opportunity to remember the great old cinemas - thank you, Allen, for this video, from someone who knows the Fox in Atlanta and the Tennessee in Knoxville (and the lovely Broadway in Pitman, JEJennings!)
For anyone who would like to see a beautiful old movie house I suggest they visit the Broadway Theater in Pitman. It's in pretty good shape and is again hosting concerts and theatrical presentations. It also houses a gem of a Kimball theater organ maintained in playing condition by the local theater organ assocation.
I loved this video! ..In the 70's I ran projectors in Trenton for RKO Stanley Warner, & in Atlantic City, Ventnor & Margate for the Hamids, Franks, & Tannenbaum.
I wouldn't say that the loss of all of these theaters is typical of New Jersey generally, but, you haven't actually been to Camden . . . have you? Think Beriut in the '70s and '80s and you're starting to get the picture.
Camden was once beautiful. Some of the African Americans weren't the only ones who brought it down. People from all races are the ones who brought it down. Now, were working on restoring it. Guess who's working on restoring Camden? People of all races are working on restoring Camden. We do have a lot of abandon homes, but we also still have some nice neighborhoods all over Camden. There are some of us still residing in the city and trying to keep it nice. Some of our children who weren't raise right is trying to mess up the decent areas all over Camden. We as the people are trying to stop all: the drug users, the drug dealers, and the children who weren't taught to keep things nice in the neighborhood. When we all work together, Camden will be just as nice as anywhere else to live. I think people need to stop saying " the blacks" brought Camden down. It's everyone who helped bring it down.
Thanks Bashir Brown. You're right it's not your fault. It's no one's fault. It's the choices that we all make. Yes, Collingswood is nice. I think Camden is nice too in certain areas. I just dislike people who aren't from here try to degrade Camden residents. I feel as though you can't talk about Camden unless you lived you here all your life. Yes some of us are poor, but doesn't stop the love we have for each other. Not only that I'm very smart and intelligent and I know a lot of people who are from here are too. Some made it out some didn't.
This makes me very happy. I was born in Camden in 1962. But was raised in Maryland. My mother grew up in Cramer Hill on Hayes Avenue. I remember it starting to get bad in the late 1960's.

Wow, you took me back to my childhood. I have a movie stub for the Midway Theatre. Thanks for showing a positive side of Camden, NJ.

Michael Landon, Collingswood native.
Very few places are safe at night regardless of the size or location.

I use to live in Camden. I never knew there were so many theaters.

My Father took me to see King Kong at the Star in 1957,now 72 years old and retired and live in Eastern Tennessee 🤠
No apology necessary. May Camden rise again--better than ever.
I'm from Camden and I'm proud to be the daughter of a well respected barbershop owner on Haddon Ave for over 45+ years.
