I was already done with Star Wars toys by the time these came out, so I had no idea they even existed until I started collecting again as an adult. So I have no nostalgia for them, but I do like the Jabba's palace ones like Amanaman and Yak Face quite a bit!
Same. I was deeply into G.I.JOE at that point mainly because they were more articulate and I got tired of the 5 POA. My friend did have Stormtrooper Disguise Luke, which I thought was cool, Death Star Gunner, and Amanaman.
To help tell the difference in the Ewoks - Lumat has the bent arm, Warok has the tilted head. I was born in 79 so these figures were on discount as I was getting into Star Wars toys. That said, while I had most of these, until recently I had no idea Amanaman, Barada and Imperial gunner even existed.
It was nice that the actor originally portrayed in Return of the Jedi got his own action figure, before he was removed from the film years later with another actor. The Ewoks allow for an entire Ewok Village of Ewoks.
I don't think the request jar is open for SS future projects, but there are loads of things he could possibly do, which I hope he does at least some of them! My idea was he could do Oola variants in different skin colours (which would also save on tooling masters). It will be interesting to see where he goes this year, but he definitely ploughs his own furrow (which I think is actually a good thing, especially in a community where everyone has an opinion!)
I couldn't agree with you more. Like you, I was pretty much over my obsession with SW by the time the last 17 were released. It was Kenner trying to squeeze the last drop of Dollars out of SW in an attempt to stimulate interest again, from lads like myself. They even threw in a coin to collect. I've only just started collecting SW figures and ships, to relive my childhood, and was utterly flabbergasted at what the last 17 go for. But hey, collectors and completionists are a funny old breed. Thanks for another fantastic video.
As a child always dreamed about finding the Luke poncho in stores as it was two new figures in one - Luke in Endor camo and also Luke in his Death Star dual outfit when you take off his accessories. Then realized not that long ago that his helmet doesn't come off!
I'd grown out of Star Wars by 84/85, so didn't realise these figures (or Trilogo cards) existed until I started collecting again in the mid 90's. Totally agree that there was some strange figure choices and odd omissions that would have sold better (Rebel Fleet Trooper, Moff Tarkin etc.). I think their reputation of supposed rarity during the pre-internet days has stuck with them (hence the crazy prices), even though none of them are particularly scarce.
Somehow I missed them as a kid, so I’ll be honest I was pretty excited when I found out about the Anakin Skywalker and imperial dignitary figures when I was a teen. I know I’m weird, but I was thrilled to get them second hand!
The only ones I had were Luke, Dignitary and Anakin, I really liked them at the time. I never saw any of the others and I guess my interest started too wain at the same time so it all just pittered out with a wimper. I only got back into collecting during lockdown and I dug out a few naked car boot finds in the loft and started to get all the accessories for them, it snowballed from there...
I was there when these came out and I can tell you now me included none of my friends brought these as we were too bizzy playing the new Nintendo NES games or getting GI-joes, He-Man and or Transformers in fast the Transformers movie came out just when these last 17 was in store shelves.
i agree, if not for the rarity no one would care about the last 17. you got me thinking about what figs kenner should have done as the last 17. here is my picks 1 luke stormtrooper 2 han stormtrooper 3 darth vader removable helmet 4 death star gunner 5 rebel fleet trooper 6 gran moff tarkin 7 sandtrooper 8 liea bikini 9 r2d2 3 legs 10 a-wing pilot 11 y-wing pilot 12 wedge x-wing removable helmet and 5 more
If the market in 85 were collector driven (it never actually is for new toys) a Grand Moff Tarkin would have made sense.....but in 85 you had two Ewok made for TV movies and an upcoming Ewok Cartoon..... zero cartoons about an old guy that got blown up 8 years prior. Its almost a shock that the last 17 weren't 17 different Ewoks.
I had a false memory for years that I saw both Luke and Han in stormtrooper on discount in a newsagent. Mid nineties I looked around for ages for the Han stormtrooper and then finally discovered it never existed....😦
Last 15 really, Paploo and Lumat appeared on ROTJ cards first but people have this mystique built around 17. And Anakin was a mail away first. Thus those 3 are more common loose then the others, but value and scarcity obsessed twits have long defined this hobby. The Imperial Gunner without the chest "armor" was in Return of the Jedi.
Literally got a box filled with these figures, never sold the extra ones we got in the eighties. Never my favorites but no collection is complete without them. Did love Yak and Amanaman as a kid.
Sorry one more comment...DS Gunner WAS in ROTJ briefly (probably as re-used footage from Star Wars 77 --refuse to call it "ANH"..cringe)....when they were using the DS gun to blow up Rebel command ships...and since he was ALSO in Mickey Rat's Rogue One, he should be a no-brainer BS guy so I can finish my Imps!!! Just saying! ;P
I dont know why the Death Star Gunner hasnt made a BS appearance yet...I need him to complete my IMP set!! LOL. Also?..why no Imperial crest on the 1985 versions' bucket!?....Dave, do you sell those?..I know its an expensive figure to "customize" with a sticker, or decal..., but I cant stand looking at his empty head!!!!
I was lucky to own all of these last 17 figures and still do so I have a strong nostalgia connection to these even the imperial dignity figure and anakin, I was lucky to own almost the entire Star Wars collection from Kenner with the exception of hammerhead, blue snaggletooth, goth rebel trooper and Death squad commander. Great memories.
I had a surprising amount of last 17 as a child, considering I was less enthused with Jedi and had moved on after the Rancor and Jabba needs were met... but I did have EV, Stormtrooper Luke, Anakin, and Carbonite Han. While Han was a terrible figure, I very much liked the Carbonite gimmick. The fact that Anakin and the Imperial dignitary didn't even have hands which could hold items rendered them largely useless for play value. Obviously everyone can agree that additional droid colors would have made more sense. I think it largely came down to Kenner wanting to make product from only the newest story in the days without vcr, dvd, internet, or video games to keep it fresh in memory, but the fact Kenner never revisited the missing Cantina aliens is mind boggling now. Especially considering how deep they were interested in going with Jabba alien designs.
Great to get your take on these figures. As a lifelong star wars collector a wish I'd picked these up at the beginning of my collecting back in the 90s. It seems insane to get most of these now at current prices and with how brittle the figures are getting. Really enjoy your star wars content.
@@tatooinestar I recently bought the complete figure mint with coin. Expensive! At first, I thought their utility belts (Leia and Luke) were identical, but then I read (and checked) about the number of notches on the belts: TWO for Leia, and THREE for Luke.
It’s obvious they had another crew choosing and sculpting these last lot! No interest in 15 of them! Only Luke and R2 are in line with the previous figures
I did see the figures for sale in 1985 (TOY WORLD), but didn't get any of them. On first sight, the new packaging and collector's coin threw me off, I wasn't sure if they were part of the same (classic) STAR WARS Kenner lines. I was a teenager at the time, and was pretty much done collecting the figures (sold off my childhood figures in 1987). However, I do remember liking this latest batch of action-figures. It's a pity that there wasn't a second wave of "STAR WARS - The Power of The Force" figures.
@@toypolloi Paploo and Lumat were released on Jedi 79-back cards before the POTF line, but only for a short period, so technically they aren't part of the last figures, but everyone calls them that, same for Anakin technically, due to being a mail away figure first, but that's just being picky.
Hi Toy Polloi, I love your videos and generally agree with you however I respectfully disagree that these are some of the worst. Anakin Skywalker is a figure that i have always loved. Likewise the ewoks I think are awesome figures. I do agree that lumat and Warok are too similar and even making one striped or some sort of color difference would have made them more interesting. The Han Solo is a horrible figure agreed. R2-D2 was a great figure with a cool gimmick but I wish that Kenner made more variants as you've mentioned many times. Imperial dignitary is a stinker for sure. Interesting how I recall dozens of imperial dignitaries, A wing pilots and and Lando figures at my local retailers
I found in store Han in Carbonite, Amanoman, Dignitary. Bought Yakface and 8D8 at a comic shop in 1988. I do remember tons of Han Carbonite on shelves.
Yes, really a last try to make some money out of the trilogy. Not one is very well done. Han doesn’t look like Han, Luke stormtrooper with the tiny ugly head, I wasn’t into SW anymore when these came out. I’m from the 12 back area and ESB. No desire to collect these figures
I had some of the last 17 when I was in my teens before I left high-school r2d2 pop up lightsaber stormtrooper disguise luke carbonite han A wing pilot imperial death star gunner poncho leia I think and yak face.
All these Ewoks look the same to me. Sorry. There were a couple of good ones, as you point out, the Imperial gunner, Amanaman EV, but Anakin was an obvious mail away (throw away)! But there was absolutely no excuse for the bloody Purple Pope! We could have had a Tarkin, dammit! I think a lot of people get them for completeness sake, and I suppose that's fair enough. I had left school and was working when they came out, and I picked them up piecemeal out of sheer force of habit! I managed (I found out in the 90's)to have all but 6 of them. I found the rest on the secondary market, but I'm still missing an R2 lightsaber and half an amanaman staff. Typical they're ruinously costly, but needs must...
Probably also the _only_ one. The only other Imperial dignitary figures they've made since then were in the 2003 Saga line and both of those were completely different character, so this guy still hasn't got a modern equivalent!
I think many would be happy to got so many different ewoks , most of the kids back in the days used Chief Chirpa as amry builder figure to make a tribe .
I was 20 when ROTJ came out. Loved the movie, and indeed, bought (and opened) the figures. I slowly drifted out of Star Wars (heresy, I hear some people saying), and got into other things, music mainly. I still made model kits, though, and on a trip to my local hobby shop, in about 1986 time, saw racks of Star Wars figures I'd never seen before. The shop was selling them as three figures for £1. I got all bar Yak Face and Anakin. Returning to the shop a few days later, it was obvious that the figures were not selling. A week or so later - they had gone, and I later found out where - landfill. (sigh). The late 1980's were a dark time to be a Star Wars collector. It seems to be repeating now, with shops full of unsold 3.75" sequel figures. And mobody buying them. Good video, and an honest reason for not liking them. The only one I have now is an Anakin I got from a car boot sale. All the rest were a bit "Meh", and got rid of over time.
I completely agree with you on these Dave. I’ve always found them very underwhelming for the price people ask for. There were still plenty of other character options to have made that would have been much more interesting. A removable helmet Vader would have been epic! Thank you for being honest about these figures. It’s good to know I’m not the only person that was unimpressed by them. Cheers!
A great vid. Agree entirely. They’re only a few that interest me but they’re really only a focus for completionists. I enjoy collecting up to the 77 back… as those are the ones I have the best memories of…the rest are a tad “meh” for me.
I don't think the last 17 were inherently bad, though the complaints about build quality on Amanaman and 9D9 are on point. Lets face it, there were some real duds in the previous figure releases as well. The thing is, though one figure may not evoke anything to one kid, it might be a huge deal to another. Yes, those last 4 Ewoks are pretty boring, especially the Lumat and Warok -(the only real difference is that Warock's head is tilted. Seriously, I think that is really the only difference in the toys) but to a kid that LOVED Ewoks, what a great way to build his little village. Is the emperors dignitary super lame? Absolutely. No accessories, just sort of stands there looking creepy, pretty boring waste of plastic for sure. But again, to a kid who is really into the emperor and recreating Death Star scenes, why not? Would the dignitary be any 'better' had he come with a staff or a blaster or an imperial clipboard with job performance evaluation forms? Probably not. (well, now that I think about it, I could probably get a lot of play out of the job performance forms... that sounds like fun, giving quarterly reviews to the AT-ST driver and the Death Squad Commander...) The problem (beyond the aforementioned quality control) isn't that the figures are lame, its that looking at them through nostalgia colored glasses, many of us had aged out by that time. I was SUPER into Star Wars toys when I was ten. When these came out, I was 13, and though Star Wars still held a special place in my heart, I just wasn't too terribly interested in these toys, be they main characters or filler guys. And I bet the same goes for many collectors. As I said above, a whole bunch of the earlier figures were pretty silly if you take off the nostalgia goggles. Cloud Car pilot? What can you really do with him other than seat warm the cloud car toy? Ree Yees? Madine? Skiff Klatuu??? Snaggletooth? They made plenty of background characters that were really just filler prior to the last 17, but a kid with a good imagination could make anything work. If I DID have to lodge a complaint with the last 17, its that as was said, some of the sculpting was subpar. I totally agree that the carbonate Han is a bad sculpt. Why are Lando's pants not blue? And my biggest pet peeve, why is Luke's helmet sculpted onto his head? Leia had a removable helmet, why not give Luke the same thing they had already produced, and looses his shirt flap so you could take off his poncho and helmet and use him in the Death Star lightsaber fight? That just seemed like bad planning on Kenner's part. No towline is perfect, but damn, Kenner got as close as anyone ever would with those Star Wars toys. The proof is in the pudding that here we are discussing them, making videos about them and even repairing and restoring them forty years later.
I have no connection to the last 17. I did complete my collection about 15-20 years ago, but my connection to the figures ended hallway through TESB. Should made: Tarkin Motti Han Stormtrooper Biggs (Tatooine or pilot) Sandtrooper Wedge Dodonna Rebel Fleet Trooper Slave Leia More cantina aliens More droids. They could have go on.
The amount of Ewoks made for the Kenner line makes sense given how Lucas was betting on their popularity from ROTJ with kids. Better to have a nice selection of Ewoks than not have them and kids wanting more. Also, having more characters from ROTJ in the POTF line also makes sense since ROTJ was the most recent film. However, I do agree with you in regards that Kenner should have included more characters from ANH and ESB in the POTF line.
I was young enough at the time that I have a soft spot for the ewoks, and I used to have all of the names memorized. Logray is my favorite. His skull mask is just so great.
“Force Ghost Anakin” is my all time favorite Star Wars figure because it’s arguably the worst figure ever. An old guy in Jedi robes, with no accessories or the ability to hold them. He doesn’t even fit in the Landspeeder. I love it.
These came out so late in the run they were not much more novelty at the time. My local hardware shop Bulls had all these at 59p back in ‘85 and I picked up all but Artoo, EV-9D9, Romba and Lumat. Of course aside from Lando, Han, and the two Lukes they weren’t anything special and for me their fate was sealed at a car boot sale in 1988 where nearly all my stuff went in the name of growing up. Wish I still had ‘em.
To clarify, the Imperial Gunner is in fact also a ROTJ character/figure. This is denoted by the fact that he isn’t wearing body armour of which distinguishes him from his ‘New Hope predecessors of whom did. Further confirmation of this can be found on the figure’s backing card photo, sans armour and clearly dating from the production of ‘Jedi. Of the fabled Last 17 figures then this makes ‘Luke in Stormtrooper Disguise’ a unique and certainly strange inclusion indeed!
@@toypolloi Yes, sort of. They were present during the Emperor’s grandiose arrival on the Death Star, likely to beef up the numbers of (non matte painted) rank and file. Given that their costume was considerably more simplified than in ANH though it was clear they were intended merely as background decoration. Incidentally a probe droid prop (like the one Han destroyed on Hoth in ESB) was also present in the parade scene and I believe there’s a few production photos with two of the aforementioned Imperial Gunners posing with it… EDIT: Just seen an ROTJ screenshot depicting the assembled troops plus Vader kneeling before the Emperor’s newly arrived shuttle. The probe droid is at the top left and there standing before it are some non-armoured Imperial Gunners of which the Last 17 figure is based on!
When I was young and collecting in the 90s at car boots etc. I managed to scramble together enough to buy a Dignitary for £25! It was my only proper last 17 figure, and I thought it was cool (and fun to have a baddie that could be a post ROTJ surviving head villain) Unfortunately over various house moves of both myself and my folks he has vanished! So it drives me mad when most collectors vids on RUclips are slating him!
Hi Dave, totally agree, these last 17 figures are fairly ho-hum but Kenner ordered us to "collect em all" so we had no choice. It was fun however trying to collect these over the years at a good price, albeit very challenging. Impossible to do now I think.
I always liked the jabas palace aliens. i didnt mind that they didnt appear much in the film, i thought yak face and amanaman looked really cool. same with han in carbonite. i thought the semi translucent carbonite block looked so cool when i was 9 or 10. so i definately have very fond memories of the last 17. funny how different opinions can be haha. cheers.
I was still all in for Star Wars at this point but couldn’t find most of these. I got Han and Endor Luke and both are still favorites. But Luke should’ve had a saber instead of a blaster. Couldn’t find stormtrooper Luke and thought they should’ve made a stormtrooper Han to go with it.
I feel pretty much as you do about the last 17. I differ with most fans in regards to that Luke Stormtrooper figure though. I'm not much of a fan of it. The novelty of a removable helmet is a great idea, but the execution just isn't there. When you see that misshapen, tiny Luke potato head beneath the helmet....well, to me, it just looks nothing like the character or any other version of Luke in the line. That weird, little head is just miniature, like one of those Russian dolls with a smaller doll inside. lol. It's kind of goofy-looking, if I'm honest. That one is just for the novelty, and that's about it. Even with today's action figures, I don't enjoy figures with the removable helmet gimmick because it means badly proportionate or tiny heads are going to be beneath to fit the helmet on, or the helmet will be oversized to fit the head beneath, which again, throws the proportions of the figure off. Either way, it is weird. I'd much prefer two separate sculpted heads that you could change out. Of all the figures from the last 17, the R2D2 with the pop-up light saber is my favorite. Yeah, it is like the Sensorscope R2, but it differs in the gimmick in that it actual raises the saber with the click of the head. It's not the most amazing gimmick of all time, but it does distinguish itself from the Empire version. The Sensorscope R2D2 had the same sort of gimmick, but the scope had to be pulled out manually with your fingers. The scope tended to get trashed overtime from fingernail damage. It's nearly impossible to find a good version of the Sensorscope R2 where the Sensorscope top hasn't taken a beating. Besides, it's not even a "sensorscope" anyway--it's a bloody periscope! lol. I actually like EVE 9D9 a lot. He's just a fun looking character, and the mouth gimmick was unique to him. He just is not play-friendly due to his weak arms and legs. They are notorious for breaking as they are incredibly spindly. That's a bit of a let-down. The A-Wing pilot is the best of the entire last 17 in my opinion! He has the best sculpt! He reminds me of a cosmonaut or something, and I like him. His gun isn't much to right home about, but he's just a quality figure. What kid could would resist the Imperial Dignitary, I ask you?? lol. That one is such a mort. No kid would have wanted that figure. No connection to it, and he's just a non-entity. He's like a politician for goodness sake! Hey, kids! Your politician figure is waiting for you at Toys 'R Us! Come get one! Uhm, yeah... Thanks for the fun review of the last 17. Completists do try to collect these, and I have several, though many of mine are actually Stan Solo versions. I'd love to get an original A-Wing pilot, but he is very tough to find here below $300. I just can't see shelling out that much cash for a 4" loose figure. Maybe someday, I'll luck out and get one for a more reasonable sum though.
The A-Wing pilot is awesome! When I read the thumbnail title the first thing I thought was hey what about the green pilot guy?! The other 16 are kind of a bummer though. I remember wanting the green pilot as a kid and my dad saying he's just like the red pilot guy you don't need another one. :(
I remember seeing some of the last seventeen figures in a gift shop in the Knott's Berry Farm amusement park when I was seven years old and still very much into playing with Star Wars figures. I remember my parents offering to buy me a figure or two (they must've been on super-closeout clearance pricing- but anyway . . . ) which I declined. I remember thinking the head sculpts for Han and Luke were probably among the worst I'd ever seen!
Good points. Pop Up R2D2's light saber looked like a club or bat not a saber. I think the reason we didn't care for these figures was because SW was on it's way out in 1985.
My favourite figure is still the first figure I ever got, which was the Snowtrooper. I woke up one morning and may dad had hung it from the door handle in my bedroom, great figure. I must say I do like the Luke in storm trooper armour, but like you I have a bias as I love the troopers and droids.
I always thought the Luke Stormtrooper looked stupid. Had a cabbage for a head without a neck... The figure looks awesome though, just a fail on that headsculpt.
I totally agree. Bad head sculp. The only thing I can think of is that Kenner based him specifically on the trash compactor wet hair scene. Or maybe the helmet wouldn't fit on with a proper head/hair style.
Their popularity is an easy one - everyone of "our" generation was into Star Wars. We all drifted out or away, and when we found our way back, there were these "unknown" figures - a whole new wave to collect. They provided a new set to enjoy when we didn't have much that was new to buy. Hence their prices just kept going up. Thanks to Stan Solo, we can have many of these on a good budget and with no fear of breakage.
I agree with you on the Vader with removable helmet, but I think you'd still need the Anakin figure also. He's an important character that gets talked about and referred to throught the trilogy, and I think we would complain that they didn't produce Anakin to wrap the whole thing up. I certainly would. :) I do wish Endor Luke's helmet would be removable as Leia's was. He could be a two-in-one figure seeing as how he's in his dueling outfit (minus the vest). I totally agree, though, that the POTF line should've been unproduced figures instead of filler figures. I would keep: R2 w/ saber Gen. Lando A-wing pilot St Luke Endor Luke Ewoks Anakin Thanks for the video
My suspicions are that an individual's feelings on the last 17 have a great deal to do with where they were at with Star Wars at the time and/or what their favorite sequences from the film were. I'm a huge fan of the Jabba/barge battle sequence, so Yak Face, Barada, Amanaman, etc....they were high on my list of figures I wanted as a kid but didn't get. The A wing pilot and Imperial Gunner....not so much.
Every last 17 is awesome, vibrant colors and details in all figures…i love that they made background figures…how many Luke Hans and Leias can one collect
Dave - this might be my fave video of yours. Love these sorts of deep insight pieces and hope to see you do more. Now I'm tempted to script up an "are the Last 6 LJN WWF Superstars the BEST Six?" as they had the same rarity/spiking value sorts of issues. Lolol...
I’m actually surprised that the force ghost Anakin isn’t the most sought after considering George changed it to the younger version, I’d have thought that would have made him instantly the number one must have figure since Lucas decided to mess with all of our childhood memories
Oh Dave you grumpy old man 🤣 I was fortunate enough to have a few of the last 17 as a kid, and that connection you talk about only really came with Luke poncho due to sitting him on a speeder bike and battling a Biker Scout, and Luke stormtrooper. I completed my collection of the last 17 about 20 years ago, but the one figure I always couldn’t understand why it wasn’t produced, was Han stormtrooper to go with Luke. Then, 20 years later watching one of your videos, I found out about SS and his version of Han Solo stormtrooper. And now the ‘last 18’ is complete 👍🏻
This POTF line was one my favorites. It really starts nailing some of the esoteric characters. I had most of this line bitd sans YakFace (stateside); I seem to recall getting most of these guys at Montgomery Wards and Toy r us stores. I do agree though… too many Ewoks. For me, lack of human skiff guards is glaring. Maybe more denizens of Star Wars cantina or a Admiral Piett.
No Tarkin or Rebel Trooper in the wave - fail! FOUR MORE EWOKS! Gah! Endoor Luke could have been good with a removable helmet, but no. However, I will always be thankful for this wave giving me Stormtrooper Luke and pop-up lightsabre R2... good times!
Although I'm a casual fan at best regarding 'Star Wars', especially in terms of figures - 'Masters of the Universe' has always been my biggest love - I really enjoyed this video; Maybe there's an idea in it for a new series of videos TP - different waves of various long-running toylines, which one was the best and which was the one where they were really scraping the barrel? :)
These were the last desperation to hold on to Star Wars for me. We'd get a few on occasion. I wasn't really I to as many rotj figures either. Had a few favorites I thought were great. I'd say not as strong for me. Im sure other collectors have fond memories for sure. I could see the status collectors loving the rarity of them too.
I was already done with Star Wars toys by the time these came out, so I had no idea they even existed until I started collecting again as an adult. So I have no nostalgia for them, but I do like the Jabba's palace ones like Amanaman and Yak Face quite a bit!
I gave up on ever completing my collection with Yak Face when I found out he cost more than my first car.
I think when you said, "they could have made Darth Vader with a removable helmet" you may have given Stan Solo an idea. At least, I hope you did.
I FROM THE FUTURE AND HE DID!!!
That Death Star Gunner was my favourite figure at one point… he was like Knight Rider’s ‘K.I.T.T.’ as a man.
He is awesome. He looks like he could rule the Empire himself.
Last 17 are the BEST. The sculpt on Ammanan and Barada alone proves this.
They didn’t get any dollars for the last 17. They were only released in Europe. Hence the collector price.
We had them in Canada

Chris Smith will sort us out hopefully. Love that chaps work. I have absolutely no problem with matching vintage with custom. Just want more toys.
Well said,Sir Dave. Very humble of you to share to us your joy of vintage Star Wars toys.
9:26 I actually laughed out loud when you pulled that ST helmet off to reveal Luke's tiny head. Man, that's terrible.
That helmet helps to hide his shame
Loved hearing your thoughts Dave. As a collector who does not own these figures I enjoyed hearing your take on them. Great Video!

I only got back into collecting during lockdown and I dug out a few naked car boot finds in the loft and started to get all the accessories for them, it snowballed from there...
I have to disagree on this one. I think it is mostly a great set, and they got plenty of use by me, back in '84.
I think I agree with you. Even the Ewoks and Jabba's Palace background figures were great for beefing out set piece play battles.
Yeah, as someone who had none of them as a kid they just look the same as the original 90 or so.
@@squiddley100 Ewoks are awesome if you have the village or your own custom Ewok diorama. Can never have enough Ewoks.
I was there when these came out and I can tell you now me included none of my friends brought these as we were too bizzy playing the new Nintendo NES games or getting GI-joes, He-Man and or Transformers in fast the Transformers movie came out just when these last 17 was in store shelves.
i agree, if not for the rarity no one would care about the last 17.
you got me thinking about what figs kenner should have done as the last 17.
here is my picks
1 luke stormtrooper
2 han stormtrooper
3 darth vader removable helmet
4 death star gunner
5 rebel fleet trooper
6 gran moff tarkin
7 sandtrooper
8 liea bikini
9 r2d2 3 legs
10 a-wing pilot
11 y-wing pilot
12 wedge x-wing removable helmet
and 5 more
Since they did Luke as a Stormtrooper, they should have done Han as a Stormtrooper. That was a missed opportunity.
And now someone has made him! ruclips.net/video/Bz3U15ZZZhI/видео.html
How much would you expect to pay for a mint off card EVDV9 with a working jaw.
Creatures were always good figures to have....they could be used at the Cantina, Jabbas place or play the part of Bounty Hunters.
Wow you said all ewoks look the same!!
In my opinion, not on my list
I saw you on Ed's Retro Geek Out! You were great!
I saw you there as well. Nice to chat!
Spot on !
Literally got a box filled with these figures, never sold the extra ones we got in the eighties. Never my favorites but no collection is complete without them. Did love Yak and Amanaman as a kid.
I bet you get bugged now by people trying to complete their collection.
@@TheSickNeeds not really, over here these figures are not that rare.
@@KenshoBeats In that case I'm on my way over!

@@KenshoBeats when my band tours Europe I'll bring you all the beer you can handle! LOL
Hey, it's okay - I don't care about _any_ of the vintage figures! :D
Just saying! ;P
Why are there 18 in the last 17?
edit...Han came with the carbonite block...that counts as 1.
I really like the monsters and the troopers, I just think they came out a little too late :-) for kids to really bond with them.
Great to get your take on these figures. As a lifelong star wars collector a wish I'd picked these up at the beginning of my collecting back in the 90s. It seems insane to get most of these now at current prices and with how brittle the figures are getting. Really enjoy your star wars content.
Great video Dave! There’s no way I can afford the insane prices that these figures go for
Thank goodness for Stan solo! That’s the only way I could complete my collection
Doesn't look like Endor Luke is wearing an original poncho? Your handiwork from a previous video?
His belt is a zip tie too, but doesn't look too bad! Luke's belt is unique too, so hard to find.
Correct.
Some of the figures look like less skilled hands were used to craft them. Perhaps Kenner cutting costs?
Warok was in the middle in front of Luke Endor
Far left with the purple hood, yes.
Thank the maker for Stan Solo, and his very much reasonably priced last 17 repro figures !
Wasn't the Anikan figure a mail-in figure? 🤔
And available on Tri-logo card.
@@toypolloi Was it the same exact figure? 🤔
Yes.
Technically, we only got 2 Ewoks in the last batch. I don't know why people count Paploo and Lumat. Still think it's two too many.
They are part of the last 17. So there are four. Otherwise it would be the last 15 which no one is talking about as far as I know 🤔
@@toypolloi Paploo and Lumat were released on Jedi 79-back cards before the POTF line, but only for a short period, so technically they aren't part of the last figures, but everyone calls them that, same for Anakin technically, due to being a mail away figure first, but that's just being picky.
Near the end, Yak face kept swaying in the background, like he was amused by Polloi's displeasure!
Death Star Gunner is the ROTJ version as there is no chest armour. 👍
I had 6 of them and they are amongst my favorites. 2 Ewoks, R2D2, Han, Luke as Stormtrooper and the Death Star Gunner - they all ruled.
Can't disagree, about 1/3 of them are pretty dull imo.
i think the imperial dignitary is the first try to do Sate Pestage in figure, or well for me it was always him. Best Palpy Friend
Probably also the _only_ one. The only other Imperial dignitary figures they've made since then were in the 2003 Saga line and both of those were completely different character, so this guy still hasn't got a modern equivalent!
@@Takeshi357 There was another dignitary with a hat on his head that made him look like Marge Simpson. Thank God he never got a figure.
Surprised by these opinions here...I think most (definitely not all) of these figures are great. Especially Carbonite Han, R2, and Anakin
There are never too many Ewoks. Warok is on the left. Lumat is cuter, but not as cute as Romba.
I think many would be happy to got so many different ewoks , most of the kids back in the days used Chief Chirpa as amry builder figure to make a tribe .
Romba, Paploo, and Chief Chirpa, are my favourites.
I like Romba best. Probably, because he also happens to be the tubbiest ewok figure.
I think you could have been even more critical of the Anakin and Dignitary…they can’t hold anything!! What is the point! 😂
(well, now that I think about it, I could probably get a lot of play out of the job performance forms... that sounds like fun, giving quarterly reviews to the AT-ST driver and the Death Squad Commander...)
The problem (beyond the aforementioned quality control) isn't that the figures are lame, its that looking at them through nostalgia colored glasses, many of us had aged out by that time.
Should made:
Tarkin
Motti
Han Stormtrooper
Biggs (Tatooine or pilot)
Sandtrooper
Wedge
Dodonna
Rebel Fleet Trooper
Slave Leia
More cantina aliens
More droids.
I love it.
you think he is worse than the Imperial Dignitary? At least Anakins nose doesn't fall off.
For me, Yak Face is the only desirable figure here, he has a nice sculpt. Maybe Stormtrooper Luke at a push, just for the removable helmet feature.
I’m Just curious the average production numbers on those figures ? Enjoying your channel
Do you actually see the gunner in Rotj? I only thought you saw him in star wars.
@@toypolloi Yes, sort of. They were present during the Emperor’s grandiose arrival on the Death Star, likely to beef up the numbers of (non matte painted) rank and file. Given that their costume was considerably more simplified than in ANH though it was clear they were intended merely as background decoration.
Incidentally a probe droid prop (like the one Han destroyed on Hoth in ESB) was also present in the parade scene and I believe there’s a few production photos with two of the aforementioned Imperial Gunners posing with it…
EDIT: Just seen an ROTJ screenshot depicting the assembled troops plus Vader kneeling before the Emperor’s newly arrived shuttle. The probe droid is at the top left and there standing before it are some non-armoured Imperial Gunners of which the Last 17 figure is based on!
When I was young and collecting in the 90s at car boots etc. I managed to scramble together enough to buy a Dignitary for £25! It was my only proper last 17 figure, and I thought it was cool (and fun to have a baddie that could be a post ROTJ surviving head villain)
Unfortunately over various house moves of both myself and my folks he has vanished! So it drives me mad when most collectors vids on RUclips are slating him!
Stan Solo is selling a high Quality repro of him.
Hi Dave, totally agree, these last 17 figures are fairly ho-hum but Kenner ordered us to "collect em all" so we had no choice. It was fun however trying to collect these over the years at a good price, albeit very challenging. Impossible to do now I think.
I think the same too impossible to find unless you pay a second mortgage
I had moved on to GI Joe and Transformers by this point. Star Wars was down to two pegs that no one looked at by the time these came out.
I always liked the jabas palace aliens. i didnt mind that they didnt appear much in the film, i thought yak face and amanaman looked really cool. same with han in carbonite. i thought the semi translucent carbonite block looked so cool when i was 9 or 10. so i definately have very fond memories of the last 17. funny how different opinions can be haha. cheers.
The Han was disappointing to me. But I agree the carbonite block is way cool. Much better than the Slave-1 version.
I'd like to see a follow up video where you make a list of what you think the last 17 figures should have been.
Hear, hear! I think if Wedge had been in the last 17, he'd have become the most valuable figure of all (after blue Snaggletooth).
I remember thinking the head sculpts for Han and Luke were probably among the worst I'd ever seen!
us too!!! but we didnt have something awesomely named Knott's Berry Farm. mmmmn. i think it was a st.louis kaybee toys.
A challenge for you ... Make some custom figures of what you think should have been made
I have one coming up next month. An upgrade they could and should have done.
I do wish Endor Luke's helmet would be removable as Leia's was.
He could be a two-in-one figure seeing as how he's in his dueling outfit (minus the vest).
I totally agree, though, that the POTF line should've been unproduced figures instead of filler figures.
I would keep:
R2 w/ saber
Gen. Lando
A-wing pilot
St Luke
Endor Luke
Ewoks
Anakin
Thanks for the video
My suspicions are that an individual's feelings on the last 17 have a great deal to do with where they were at with Star Wars at the time and/or what their favorite sequences from the film were. I'm a huge fan of the Jabba/barge battle sequence, so Yak Face, Barada, Amanaman, etc....they were high on my list of figures I wanted as a kid but didn't get. The A wing pilot and Imperial Gunner....not so much.
Every last 17 is awesome, vibrant colors and details in all figures…i love that they made background figures…how many Luke Hans and Leias can one collect
I was into the GI JOE line around this time. This just wasn't competitive with GI JOE, MOTU, and Transformers
Dave - this might be my fave video of yours. Love these sorts of deep insight pieces and hope to see you do more.
Now I'm tempted to script up an "are the Last 6 LJN WWF Superstars the BEST Six?" as they had the same rarity/spiking value sorts of issues. Lolol...
Thanks.
I’m actually surprised that the force ghost Anakin isn’t the most sought after considering George changed it to the younger version, I’d have thought that would have made him instantly the number one must have figure since Lucas decided to mess with all of our childhood memories
Great video Dave! I wonder if budget , deadlines, limited choices had something to do with the decision that were made when choosing these last 17.
Hello Dave, a good video can present an opinion differing from mine. In that respect, I thoroughly enjoyed watching…
Glad you enjoyed it
This POTF line was one my favorites.
I like last 17. Lot more colors thin 1st 78 that's all black white an tan. 👍🍺 dave
Once again you kick ass in your reviews … keep up the great work. 👊
I used to have the majority of these. They sold them around the corner from us, box loads of them for 50p each. Wished I'd kept them now.
We all have toy regrets. Most of my collection is me re-buying all that I used to have. But for much more money in general.
