- What an iconic badge to have the honor of making. This full 3D carving was made from solid 8/4 Black Walnut with color contrast. Finished with a matte Odies for a classic look.
I try to post new videos as time permits. I often make repeat projects so I don't want to post repeat end products. New projects coming soon and are in the works.
Have a questions about how I do things, just ask and I'll do my best to answer.

Awwwww!! That's Quality workmanship!👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Awesome job 🎉The person for whom it’s for is very lucky ❤
As someone who is still learning, I really appreciate that you showed the finishing process as well as the carving process. Seeing your finising technique is really helpful. Thank you!
Amazing work !!! The idea of the blue tape on the writings is awsome ! thanks .
Thank you, we have learned a lot from you...we can feel your passion in explain your content about CNC router project in detail..Great job!! ☺🧡
Fantastic work! Nice to see the real potential of CNC machines.
Much appreciated. Thank you
Thank you for stretching our imaginations!!
Superb work!
Beautiful craftsmanship, brotha!
Impressionante! Trabalho muito bonito! Muitos detalhes. Parabéns.
Excellent work, well done🫡
Love it!
The LAPD badge is one of my favorite works of art for many years. This is incredible work and no surprise that Jay would be the one to produce this beautiful piece. I have wanted to do it for years. Great work Jay. Your videos occupy too much of my time but they are just that good. Thanks
Much appreciated for the watch and kind comments. But this is not Jay's channel. lol. But being mistaken for Jay Bates' work isn't so bad though.
@@bateswoodworking Sorry for the mistake but not for the compliment. You do outstanding work for which I am very envious. Thank you so much for sharing
simply wow
Thank you sir
Very impressive! 👍🏼
Thank you. Definitely one of our favorites
Good work
wow! so amazing! :)
Much appreciated.
Excellent.
Excellent work! Thanks for supporting the Blue Line!
Thank you! even if the LAPD chief doesn't we always will!
I would like to see how you setup the Badge in Aspire! Awesome Video!!
We have considered making a Vectric video showing some of the design aspects for our CNC makers.
WOW
Amazing CNC and finish work! Couldn't help but think how much better it could have turned out with a better glue up of closer matching color at the center line.
We totally agree. The seem was supposed to diminish that direction and that was why I chose that side as up and it threw a surprise. Too far into it to do anything, but yes was not our anticipated outcome.
@@bateswoodworkingI actually like the difference it brings to the piece!
Wow
Awesome work, I really like watching your videos. I am new to CNC routing and currently run a Laguna Swift. I have a quick question on the badge, did you have to manually trace a pic of the badge in Vectric or is there a way to trace it and get all of the vectrics out? I noticed yours has really good detail.
This design took me almost 3 months to complete. Started with a LAPD png image and traced each vector out and then modeled each vector individually in Zbrush.
Amazing work. So, you used 2" thick material. Did you just use 4 bits (1/4" BN, 1/16"TBN, 45dVbit & 60dVbit)? Do they have to be specialty extra long bits to reach the 2" depth, so the collet doesn't hit the taller sections and sides? I want to do deeper carvings but I'm very new to CNC - so I'm nervous to attempt deep carving. Should the bit length be at least as deep as the stock, or is that not necessary? Most regular cutters only cut 1/2" to an inch.
Hi. Yes this size needed to be 8/4 to get the detail in the model I wanted. This carve had the 4 bits you asked and just a 1/4" endmill for the profile. Hey good question on the cutting length. I use the RIP precision tools bit#TBN-06220F3.
It has a full 2" tapered cutting length and is a phenomenal bit.
Yes it's recommended a 2" cut or you'll just burn the edges as the non cutting sides rub the wood. Hope this helps
Love this, what would you charge someone for something of this magnitude
?
These range depending on size and wood type. Starting around $300 and up though if that helps.
Very impressive ! Do you mind me asking what you used for a topcoat ?
This matte finish was odies oil.
Do you generate your own 3D drawings for the software? like the LAPD badge? Great job , I love it !
Thank you! We work directly with a close friend who is a ZBrush designer. Several smaller tweaks are done in Aspire as well.
I am looking for something like this 3d modelled design (not the carving), but as a AUS Queensland Police Badge. The LAPD one is just an impressive badge though. Would love to have the model of that and see how it would work 3d printed in wood filament. (Not sure it would work but I dont have the skill or machines used here).
Beautiful, forgive my ignorance what kind wood you use.
Hi, thanks. This badge was made from 8/4 Black Walnut.
Very cool. Do you remember the font you used? I’m new to this but that came out great!
the badge number font is "Munson". The other banner text was "Courier New Greek"
great job .how long did that take to carve I guessing 18 hr .
Good estimate....All toolpaths total at 21 hours.
ya 3d carving takes for ever but I still enjoy doing them. great job on the badge I wish I could my fine details as crisp as yours you have got your craft down perfect
Can you tell me what white paint and spray were used for the engraved letters?
The white was water based clear coat used as a sealer so the blue paint doesnt run. The pain is a spray enamel. Enamel great for use with the Odies Oil and Wax finishes. For spray gloss eurethane finishes I prefer using primer or flat paint.
Where did you get the original artwork from, a real badge? Or, did you freestyle all of that?
This design took almost 5 months in Zbrush. There are models out there for sale but I found those to be poor detail. I'd recommend looking at etsy.
Awsome! What cnc do you use?
We run the LAGUNA SWIFT
How long did it take you To complete?
If I remember this was around 18-20 hours total. it was a big one and I ran it a 8% step over.
Who did you talk with to get commissioned to do this piece
The customer.? 🤷
How long the machining took?
I think this one took about 12 hours
how do you model your badges?
Our modeling is on Zbrush. Some minor changes and toolpath corrections for carving are done in Aspire as well.
@@bateswoodworking They're pretty amazing! Love to see a video on your modeling approach.
Did you do the CAD and toolpaths work, or did you get the file from some other source? I've just started making 3D effects with Vectric VCarve Pro and appreciate the work that goes into this piece. Great video BTW... but I'd suggest you tone down the cheesy intro.
This was definitely one of our earlier intros that we stopped using. Now they are really quick. But you're right it was totally cheesy. We do our own modeling in ZBrush and some in aspire.
Do you have or sell the file for this!???
Hi. This file is a custom file we created in Zbrush since we weren't impressed with the few files that are out there for purchase. But yes you can search LAPD STL file and it should take you to some options in the internet.
Bro what software is this
This is ASPIRE vectric 11.5
May i know the cnc machine you're using?
We use the Laguna SWIFT
@@bateswoodworking thank you. Nice art work, you've earned a subscriber.
What do you charge for one of these?
They range depending on size and wood but avg cost is around $400-ish
Not impressed. I could do it myself within a (light) year.
;) lol
I have an idea if you have not tried it yet.. For the parts that are more detailed.. Go ahead and CNC the shapes.. but use a laser to do the engraving.. like the smaller parts that might chip or get tear out. ;-) ??
Yes you are correct, Many times we will incorporate our laser to enhance the more detailed tiny spots, such as bricks and windows. We can manage clean carves on very small areas though using the appropriate settings and bit. We find the Amana 45611 is a great bit for these areas.
