I main Summoner, I love it. It's a lot of fun, and is the first DPS class to get a Rez (Red Mage gets theirs at 64, SMN gets theirs at I think 12?). One thing to note is that Red mage didn't come as a base starting class, so you'd have to level any other job up to I think 50? before it becomes available.

  • @Doku71

Black Mage is very rough starting, up until 60. Every 10 levels after is another layer of learning to grasp with charges and Paradox. Blm is best once you've experienced a fight since you have to plan your rotation for minimum downtime and abusing the latency cast conpletion. It is very satisfying to play and benefits greatly from Swiftcast and Triple Cast along with high Spell Speed, however, Pictomancer currently can match or even exceed Blm in damage with its various instant casts, being able to prep a burst of damage during a bosses invuln phase, providing a shield and heal, and a raid damage buff without having to commit to a plan of action. Right now, Blm is in a rough spot where the main thing they should excel in, they're only just scraping by.

To clear something up about Blue Mage, Jocat said Thousand Needles sucks, and it does at higher levels
Thousand needles is a leveling tool that deals one thousand damage in total, if there's only one target it takes all of it, if there's two they take five hundred each if there's four they two hundred and fifty. You get the idea. Point is it gives an under leveled blue mage the ability to one shot higher level enemies or two shot them by first putting them to sleep, casting it then swift casting it a second time. I should mention it has a five second cast time.

I play picto now, but if you are just learning the role i think SMN is the best option to try and optimize and then learn how a fight works. once you figured it out or start to recognize things you can then go into something like RDM which still has casts but imho still a little bit easier than BLM. Picto is just fun, but has really long cast times on the big dps skills

Play Arcanist. It has a simple mage-y rotation and you get a little carbuncle following you around. Once you hit level 50, you get two new jobs instead of just first job 2.0: Summoner (dps) and Scholar (healer).

  • @Yesnaught
    @Yesnaught 2 месяца назад

Black Mage is decent fun, but I think the real value comes in the fact that it forces you to think different about fights -- "how long can I stand in one place, and what's the shortest possible distance I can move to not die?"
Every fight is designed to be cleared with every class, so every fight can be solved for a Black Mage. Knowing that no situation is impossible weirdly simplifies a lot of mechanics.

    From my personal experience:
Summoner - I'd say by far the easiest to play to a point I find them boring even, but you level both Summoner and Scholar at the same time and you can ressurect and save the party if both healers are down or to lessen the stress on healers
Black Mage - It might seem weird at first as their rotation looks pretty simple, but it's the hardest job to execute in the game in general, not just magic dps, and the harder the content, the harder it is to master BLM in that fight
You used to get rewarded with higest dps in the game if you learned the fight, but right now it is not the case with Dawntrail release, so I would keep away from it until they buff it...
Rez Mage - Middle ground between BLM and SMN in terms of damage/difficulty, and it's a job I actually find fun, and you look fly whole doing so
The fact you can ressurect just like SMN is also nice, not to mention they have the meme LB3 which blinds the entire party
Required lvl 50 on a different job to unlock though
Blue Mage - Not an actual job, it's more of a side content that you can just do on your spare time where you learn mostly useless and some op spells from mobs
It can get a bit tedious leveling or learning some spells if you don't have someone to boost you, but it's unique content and it shouldn't matter too much, and some end game BLU full party stuff is definetley fun
Pictomancer - This video was released before Dawntrail so they don't have the latest kid on the block, and it's currently highest dps in game and it's not even close to the point most people I know want it nerfed
It's fun to play and deals a lot of damage, so when you hit lvl 80 I would suggest trying it out even if they nerf it or buff other jobs to match its damage
But do take my stuff with grain of salt as I main melee dps

If you're new, then sadly you can't play Blue Mage right away. You have to beat the final boss of the level 50 portion of the game before Blue Mage unlocks.
However, if you have a reasonable audience then Blue Mage could be a fun diversion for you once you get there. The biggest problem with Blue Mage is actually just having to find your own party for content, but streamers tend to have more people wanting to party up than they can handle. If you happen to know someone in the game who can give you the "Blue Mage Tour," where they take you to a lot of the monsters that have moves you can learn, that can be a great start.

Red mage is a middleground it's quite easy to play but not as much as SMN.
don't forget that now there's a 4th mage called pictomancer, it's a bit harder to play than Red mage, i'd say it's about as hard as BLM but very easy to move with instead it's more complex in it's design.

Even though SMN is piss easy to play, its actually hard to master on harder Content especially in this Raidtier. If you stick to the normal Titan,Garuda,Ifrit rotation you will have a hard Time keeping uptime. Just as an Example M3s. Your Garuda is usually always when he jumps back but you cant switch garuda for Ifrit cause you need the movement right before. So usually you use Garuda for the instants, go to position for Pairs/Spread then cast your Ruin 3+4 and then using Slipstream. Especially M3s and M4s have a really awkward Rotation Timeline for SMN. That doesnt make him a super hard to play Job like MNK but hes not as easy as people think he is.

    *Black Mage*
If you've ever heard of wizards and sorcerers, that's the closest to the fantasy of it. You're a walking nuke that despises walking while fighting, your spells definitively look and feel powerful and you get to laugh like a maniac when you /victorypose. Rotation isn't hard to learn but it is testing when applied in actual combat. You'll learn a few tricks along the way on how to use your OGDs to let you move and avoid stuff but I think it is safe to say that playing Black Mage in dungeons is insanely satisfying. My go-to caster of choice, despite the challenge.
    *Summoner*
It did change a lot but the current iteration of it plays more like people know Summoner from other games : you summon an avatar, it does it's powerful thing, it goes away. The difference is that it imbues you with their essence afterwards so you can cast a varied set of spells and later on interesting abilities that let you move about or cast differently. Other than the Ruby / Ifrit phase, those spells are usually instant cast, meaning you have mobility. You can also raise since you have Ressurection, which is an ability retained from the Arcanist base class. It also means that leveling Summoner also levels Scholar at the same time (since the XP goes to the base class, which they share) so you also get to level a Healer at the same time.
    *Red Mage*
Dualcast makes it so every spell you cast makes the next one instant and the job is entirely designed around that mechanic. This means you get good mobility every other spell since the instant cast spell will have you on GCD but you won't lose on DPS. Then once you get your mana built up, you can rush in, do your melee combo, leading into several powerful spells delivered one after the other. Dualcast also makes it so you can rapidly raise people since Verraise also benefits from it. If you ever wanted to play a Musketeer in a MMO, that's basically the job, except with more magic in it.
    *Pictomancer*
The newest caster job. It is easy to use, easy to master and has unique, cartoony visuals for spells which may or may not work for some people. White and Black paint let you instant cast spells meaning that once you have a few built up, you can just move around for about 15 secs. The palette swap gives you stronger but longer to cast spells and you also get a neat dash that grants you a temporary sprint. It also hits ridiculously hard in older content and even current one. Muses let you summon parts of monsters to attack and eventually use a special muse spell, summon a giant hammer that you can comically strike down or a field that grants you increased spell speed and damage. However, muses are long to cast inside battle (they're instant outside of it.)
