Machinist = raw DPS Bard = party utility Dancer = partner-based DPS boost Each has their merits, but I tend to gravitate towards Bard. Bard is great because it also has a cleanse which can be used as a preventative measure. All physranged also comes with an Interject-like interrupt (Head Graze), so if your tank isn't using Interjet when they should, you can pick up that slack.
I play Dancer when I want to watch something on the second monitor when running roulettes ;D You just press whatever lights up and it's mostly good enough for that type of content And as a rule I always Dance Partner the cutest Au Ra I have in the party (yes, even if she is a healer or tank)
My preferred ranged DPS has been MCH since it got reworked in Shadowbringers as it just feels very satisfying to play in most fights. The current version in Dawntrail also feels extra good (on single targets) and if they'd just give it a little overall bump in DPS along with some love for its AOE rotation I would probably go back to maining it for the expansion. As it stands, both Viper and Pictomancer have stolen my heart to the point that it's actually been hard for me to play the other jobs even though I know I need to level them up. Thankfully, I have over 2 years to get that done and I've already got 7 jobs at lvl 100 with several more coming along slowly.
leveled all three to 90, but dancer at 100, only because i find it the most fun personally. once you have your buttons committed to muscle memory, you should start expanding your "view" to the entire fight, so you know when to party wide mitigation, or as bard warden's paean (which is esuna in disguise). the most important thing is keeping that damage output high as the sky, but after that you can maximize how much utility and thus, increasing everyone else's efficiency as well
Physical Ranged is definitely the least stressful role for me. Dancer is fun, and you do feel a bit of that freedom just running around chucking your rings at all the enemies and pressing the buttons as they light up. Biggest tip for Dancer, specifically in Pharos Sirius - when you're in the boss room where you have to not break the eggs, *don't* use your buff skills that end with a huge AOE because then the boss will instantly hit 16x damage and wipe the party.
My tip for learning a ranged DPS? Go machinist all the way. Its easy, its fun and you get a lot guns. :D Okay, being serious now, my best and biggest tip is to just go with whichever you feel like you'll have fun with. People tend to get too carried away with the meta for this game and, unless you plan on doing ultimates and savages... i don't think you need to worry about "which class is best". You like bard? The level up that bard and play that harp like your heart will melt. You wanna dance? Level up the dancer and call me in for that good samba. You want guns? Then welcome to the Machinists, pick your flavor of big shoota and blast 'em.
I've played all of them, and they're all great. My favorite though I think might be dancer because of their extra mobility with their little dash skill. Also chakrams (their weapon). Bard I really like playing especially if I get the chance to use the LB3, because death from above in holy light xD. Machinist won me over with flamethrower. Yes, you get a flamethrower as an aoe attack as a machinist. You are a walking weapon arsenal of death that would make any 'murican both proud and jealous xD. Also shotgun. They get that too. As far as any tips go, Bard is easiest to play out of the three, so I would suggest trying that out first, especially if you're already looking to play the different instruments.
Flamethrower is great, but my favorite Machinist-Skill is probably the Auto-Crossbow, because Auto-Crossbow, quite literally, go Brrrrrr! Still probably my least favorite DPS-Job, though. ...except in PvP, there it's my go-to.
i played mch in heavensward and stormblood, back when it was actually a good job! shadowbringers and onward completely ruined it, as well as the balance of the phys ranged. phys range is just complete ass now kept in raid parties for the 5% and limit break generation, otherwise we'd see 2 casters 2 melee all the time LOL
-Odd, because for pretty much all of Shadowbringers top DPS went to either red mage or dancer. I never did savage or extremes, so I can't say anything about the high-end duty performance, but for quite literally every other content dancer almost always came out on top.- -Even in Endwalker, physranged would always come in top 5% of the metrics [of runs I was personally involved with].- Oh. Reading comprehension fail. You were talking about machinist specifically. X'D
@@mattstanford9673 yes i was mostly talking about mch, but optics wasn't entirely favorable since brd fell off during prog and dnc really only gave sam a leg up in dps most of the time. i did extremes and savage and dnc was mostly played because its legit the easiest of the phys ranged to play on paper rotation, but if the dps you are partnering doesn't do damage, dnc falls off HEAVILY. top % of comps were players who know how to do dps, the average players in any setting would normally parse grey rendering dnc pretty useless. we actually had to kick our dnc, not because they were bad, but because we needed melee dps and got 2 of them and cleared E11S immediately after kicking them (tho tbf to the dnc, they forced him to dp the rdm which is such a dps loss for the dnc)
Back when I still played, I switched from RDM to MCH when they fixed it with the release of Shadowbringers and then I mained it through that and Endwalker, and I had a jolly good time with it, no idea how they've changed it in Dawntrail though.

Dancer is SOOOOO MUCH FUN!!! And when done well, it's a great addition to the party.

I'm a bard main. tips: keep your camera zoomed out. you don't need it close up. always be moving. buff whenever possible.
