Oh boy was I excited to get this watch. Ever since I knew of its existence I have wanted it along with the Explorer 1016... but at a quarter of a million price tag it aint gonna happen for this watch enthusiast.
Then on one of my endless surfing the net escapades I found the Steinhart Oceans 39 Explorer sub... exclusively made from Gnomon watches but it was sold out.
Luckily for Steinhart they where smart enough to make another watch in which I instantly fell in love with... the Oceans 39 Vintage GMT. a few clicks later it was sold... but that Sub Explorer called to me like a siren song.
Low and behold many lunar cycles later I wrote to Gnomon watches and they promptly responded that they will be available tomorrow!
Talk about meant to be! so on April 17th I scratched that unobtanium itch... a Sub Explorer.
    Enjoy my unboxing!
As usual its over 15 min... so make a cup of coffee, sit down, relax and enjoy!
    Stay safe everyone!
    A few specs:
    Steinhart Germany - Swiss Made
    Automatic ETA 2824-2/SW300 élaboré
Deep Matte Black with hour markers dial
"Old-Radium" SuperLuminova. Markers, hour, minute, second hands
    Stainless Steel 316L case
    39mm
    47mm lug to lug
14 mm thick (12mm without sapphire)
100 meters/330ft water proof... (a true dive watch!)
    Domed Sapphire antireflecting underside
    Enjoy!

Has to be my favorite homage of all time!…gilt, aged printed lume, 369 dial, drilled lugs, quality oyster bracelet, 300m water resist, all in a nifty 39mm size - ‘nuff said!
(I too have the GMT Vintage Premium (on jubilee), and Smiths Everest - you have exceptionally good taste in timepieces!

Hey Rob, great video as usual. Try wearing your watch above the radial knuckle and you'll find that stienheart watches sit flatter. It works for me.

Well, unfortunately this watch is now at the bottom of the Florida straights… lost it in a fishing trip where I had it on a rubber strap and got it caught on a cleat which popped the spring bar and I watched in shock as it quickly sunk into Davies locker.
Should have had it on a nato.

It is a great watch… classic simplicity. Only thing that threw me off was the gilt hands… so I modded mine with silver hands… and now it’s perfect!

I like Yr Videos. I got the Plexi Version of this a Year ago. It is A Beautiful looking watch. eminently wearable, & A Great Every Day Ticker. With the Plexi-Dome it is A Tad thicker than yours, but 39 mm is Th' Real Hunny-Zone for me. For Winter i like the Bracelet & in Summer it goes great on An Erika's Original Black-n-Red Marine Nationale Strap. I REALLY Dig those old '50s Subbies with the Explorer Dials, but they change-hands for Squillions nowadays, plus they still have Unsalubrious RadioActive Radium Dials. An excellent Homage & for the $$$, A Real Snip!

Thanks Bruce... a few folks don’t like ‘homage’ watches but I give a pass if the watch that’s being ‘homaged’ is over 30 years old, has been out of production and it’s difficult to buy do to rarity/cost. This watch and the Vintage GMT fit right in.

New to the channel. Nice to see emphasis on specs. Bought the plexiglass limited numbered addition, one of 300, and love it. Great size and homage. Keeps great time, also looks great on a Colareb brown strap that I own. It is great value, solid time piece.

Welcome to the channel! Slowly but surely I am putting out content...my next video will be about the 1963 Accutron Astronaut I just bought... it was either that of the new Seiko willard (SBDC109/SPB151) I chose to go with the Accutron.... cause I have been lusting for that watch for years. I just need to do a proper video since I got carried away with the unboxing. Stay tuned!

Yeah, I have since decided to cut my collection to 6 watches... and the 1016 did not make the cut (I have an Omega Speedmaster Straight writing that took its place... one needs to be a realest).

@@RobertBlanchard Right on I certainly understand that. I'd like to have a Speedy at some point. I have a Breightling Colt 44 2015 with Boxes and papers due to arrive here on Thursday. It's on the rubber strap which I like but I'd rather have the bracelet. Oh well I couldn't pass on the box and papers. I have to make sure that I'm the one who signs for the package and not the little lady. She's not fond of watches since I got heavy into this hobby. Anyway I don't own any Steinharts but I definitely like the way they look. I can't remember off the top of my head which model it is but my favorite is the vintage diver with no #'s on the bezel. I'll have to check and see if You've done an update video on your new piece.

I own three Steinharts already, including your 39 GMT on a Jubilee, and I think I need about two more - perhaps three. Number one is the Panda Daytona homage and number two is this one from Gnomon. The only thing that's holding me back at this point is the fact that it's limited and only available from Singapore. Well, that and the fact that the Daytona is first in line... :)

I’ll check it out… unfortunately this watch is at the bottom of the Florida straits sitting there ready to be found by archeologist in 5000 years.
It was a short lived ownership that I enjoyed but not as much as I thought I would.

Beautiful watch 😍. I would miss the date indicator thought. For that reason alone i prefer the regular ocean 1 39. Probably it was discarded for the homage resemble?

    • @RobertBlanchard
      @RobertBlanchard  3 года назад

I’m going to have to agree with you... it was a design choice. Personally I don’t mind not having a date... but I understand it’s importance to others. I have on order the B&R V1-92 and that has probably the best date function have seen on a watch... it’s there when you need it and ‘disappears’ when you don’t.

    Great review!
I wish they made this watch slightly shorter lug to lug distance than 47mm. I think it's little too long for a 39mm watch, this looks amazing but sadly not fit great for slim wrist coz of the lug to lug length,

    • @RobertBlanchard

Let me suggest the Seiko SRP777... I have been completely surprised by this watch. You can see my unboxing video on it. I moded it with a red tip second hand, a black day wheel and a Uncle Seiko Tropic rubber strap and now it looks, dare I say... perfect. Lug to lug is 47mm and it wears like a 40mm. If that is still to big the Seiko Mini Turtle is another under the radar watch... also wears smaller than it is. both are tool watches and thats how I use them. I have yet to wear any other watch since I got the SRP777 Turtle... its that good! You can see pics of the mod on my Instagram.

Don't know what wrist-size you have, but the 39mm case works absolutely great on my puny 17cm wrist. From personal experience I can tell you that these things look deceptively large in videos and pics. Even the 42mm, which I thought would be way too big for me based on videos and pics, looks good on my wrist and I ended up buying two in that size.. :)

Do you still own the steinhart? Is that steinhart be able to use in swimming? This is because, i bought it used, and my seller told me that i shouldn't use it for swimming.

    • @RobertBlanchard
      @RobertBlanchard  2 года назад

If the seller said that you should take it to your local watch repair and have them inspect and test the watch. Steinhart has it rated at 200 meters… and I have used mine even for some diving. Never had an issue with mine. I also believe that Steinhart uses the same case across most of their watches all they do is switch the bezel/dial it’s basically cost savings to use the same case across multiple watches and just switch out the bezel/dial/movement. As for my sub explorer…. It’s at the bottom of the Florida straights… a Mahi-mahi knocked it off my wrist… and it also got away. Loose loose.

Ha! that is exactly how I felt... so I went on eBay found a silver handset with proper Lum color and made the switch! I believe I posted it on my instagram... now the watch is perfect!
