Yep, chain shot is essentially 2 cannon balls chained together. When they leave the barrel, they separate to the chain's full length and spin viciously and are used by the navy in that age for cutting rigging and anti-personnel purposes at intermediate range. Other shots used by the navy:

If you RUclips “ChainShot” there’s a mythbusters video of them shooting a chain out of a cannon and that one doesn’t even have two heavy balls at either end. I’d imagine this Shogun scene is pretty accurate as to what would happen if a real ChainShot hit a live horse and rider.
Canister/Grape shot is actually extremely effective up to around 300 yards.
Toranaga didn't brake a promise. Watch episode 3 again. He never said John will get his ship and crew back. That only was his wishful thinking.

Mariko was reading the Portuguese translation of the English logs, she doesn't read English, after all. Back in the first episode, the priests discussed the logs and were keen the Japanese didn't learn everything in them. Blackthorn might have a sense of that when he reminds Mariko his country and Holland are at war with the people his ship was attacking.
Yes, it was her in the book. That's the whole point of the clouds and rain in the morning scene. That was Mariko's description of sex back in the last episode when they were escaping Osaka Castle.

Mariko and Fuji decided that their frustrated Hatamoto could do with the gift of a courtesan, but unbeknownst to Fuji, it was Mariko who turned up to ease John's troubled 'mind' 😉 - Mariko attributed his good mood to the 'courtesan's' visit in front of Fuji, because she wishes John to be discreet about their night together in public.
How are people not understanding that it WAS Mariko who snuck into Blackthorne's room? Apparently everyone needs lessons in subtext. Like John is going to be all gentle and caressing the face of some rando. She’s supposed to be in mourning after her husband’s death so this could get her in some real trouble. Not to mention her status alone. She is not his consort. It’s called plausible deniability when she gaslights him the next morning. Just like in the books. Plus, yeah, in the books we get her POV on this scene after John's which proves the already obvious. She pillowed the Anjin.

If we go through history and count how many civilizations have been wiped from existence due to tsunamis and volcanic activities and earthquakes, it would only prove how resilient Japan is for suviving this long.
The first depiction of casualties due to cannon fire that actually looks like all the historical accounts say it did. Shocking in the best way.

a point of note: the artillery being used are _culverins,_ not cannons.
culverines are long-range pieces, meant to shoot balls and chain against ship hulls.
when Yabushige says "this was tried years ago by the Portuguese", it could be that the Portuguese were using _cannons_ or _carronades,_ which was their preferred weapon at the time.
carronades are meant to shoot balls and shrapnel, at and above targets.
the difference being, carronades and cannons are almost always iron, where culverins could be iron or brass, therefore much lighter.
carronades must be mounted on a ship's deck to shoot up, while culverins could be mounted above and below deck, for twice the firepower.
take the Erasmus, line all cannons on the same side facing Osaka, and hammer Ishido into submission.

Toranaga is keeping Blackthorn’s crew in Edo to make sure Blackthorn keeps his agreement to train his troops. Also if the crew were in the fishing village with his ship Blackthorn would try to break them out and escape in their ship.

I think the Portuguese didn’t show them how to use the canons properly on purpose incase they would used it against them if they have to fight each other but I could be wrong tho

I mean isn't it war one way or another? I don't know how Toranaga could politic his way out of his circumstance and I doubt the 4 regent instead of 5 conundrum would be enough to halt any action against him indefinitely. It's probably marching towards war anyway but his kid just prematurely started it.
war was definitely inevitable, but Toranaga was using the "red tape" strategy to delay it. he's fighting against 4 regents, so he probably needs more troops. his son just expedited the whole thing tho so...

@@lucasbelmonte2832 it was idiotic. there are other ways to keep the canons secret, like purposely botching the demonstration. and no, it doesn't tie Yabu -- he can just take his army, the guns, and canons (like they planned) to ishido and say he had nothing to do with it -- which he can easily do since Toranaga is off on other business. they need time to prepare for war against the 4 regents and Nagakado burned all the time his dad schemed up.
@@fujiusami Well seeing as Yabu would be ordered to commit die where he to return to Osaka the yes this makes his decisions a lot easier, plus Toranaga would have done the same and in the books and 80s show Toranaga is proud of his son for doing this.

I've read the book and seen the original miniseries, but I don't remember how it plays out. Based on how calculating Toranaga-sama is, though, I think he's going to be cross. I think he wanted to wait for a more opportune moment to get into a kerfuffle, whenever that would be.

Mariko WAS the courtesan that Fuji-sama arranged for Anjin. As his courtesan, Fuji runs his house and is responsible to care for him. It would not be unreasonable for her to select a temporary courteson whom Anjin would accept. As a single woman, it would not be unusual for Mariko to serve as the courtesan.
It is also expected that they would not plainly speak of the arrangement (in Japan they live the phrase "what is understood doesn't need to be said"). Even to this day, it is uncouth to speak bluntly in Japan. You speak around the topic. In Japan, "the courtesan was acceptable?" is the same thing as Austin Powers saying, "I shagged her rotten!"
In this show, Ishido is the only one to whom the rules don't seem apply. His plain speach in Episode 1 was socially insulting, his direct accusation multiplied the offense. That is why Tadayoshi reacted so aggressively. However, Tadayoshi "losing his cool" is also an social insult (even in defense of his lord's pride), particularly when Toronaga is just taking the face punches, and Tadayoshi's sepuku was Toronaga taking the "Higher-ground" in the disagreement.
You'll recall the priest in prison that told John, "You're a child in the wilderness, you don't know their games...You can't play their game, their rules are too opaque, their hearts too guarded." The courtesan conversation is one example of "their rules."

I’m not sure if Toranaga pulled the strings that led to the cannon massacre but I’m sure he’ll take advantage of the situation. Now he’s got a team of deadly cannon operators but since all of Ishido’s men who were there are killed Ishido doesn’t know how deadly they are. And now the weaselly local lord is forced to be 100% Team Toranaga since Ishido certainly won’t trust him now.

Those are normal canon with chain shot. Mostly used to take the rigging down on ships (It's two cannon balls linked by a length of chain) They were (as you saw) no less effective against human beings.

Aside from her tragic origin they hadnt dont much with her but I always have these feelings about characters and sometimes they end up heing small side ones but still a feeling of loving them righr away and I had that with her. To me, the scene with the diving is a power play. It’s to show John who is in charge. If Torunaga tells you to dive 20 times, you dive 20 times.

I think your unit of measure conversion is wrong there. I see 150 kg, which becomes 300 kg, or 660 lbs (roughly), when cooked.
Although, I should note that I’m also seeing enough for one person to survive as opposed to a family, so it’s possible I’m wrong as well. I took that factoid from the novel Shogun, where this is discussed at some length because it becomes relevant to a plot point.
@@plectrumuraYes, I read 150kg unprocessed rice which is about 136.5kg of milled white rice. Enough for a person to survive for a year, but a good diet was generally considered 1.8 Koku.

then Anjin said that he doesn't understand probably because he thought that Mariko likes him romantically too but later realized that it was just a job for a consort - like no strings attached.

Real history had never happened , it is only story and Gracia (mariko) did not meet Blackthrone at all. She was at couple's castle and Osaka at couples resident.

Everyone keeps forgetting Mariko grew up in a culture with different views on sex. If it was her pillowing with John, why would she hide it? Notice the women weren't even phased by John's full frontal nudity. They didn't even avert their eyes. Neither has Mariko. Plus, if she was lying, why involve Fuji?

It's not Mariko. Mariko has maintained her emotions throughout the show and she would never act on them, even if she liked John, she would not 'pillow' with him. And someone pointed out on another page, keeping with japan customs, it is an honor to chose an acceptable courtesan, that's why she was smiling. Folks saying she wants deniability or secret, that's not her character and she has said she will not lie or dishonor Toranaga, she represents him in all walks of life. Plus it was not japan customs for women to bed outsiders, unless they were courtesans or vowed to them. Folks just want it to be. It was in fact a gift. But they shot it that way to think either way.

Yeah, it wasn't Mariko. I think folks are looking at the show thru today's minds and eyes. Mariko would not lay with John unless Toranaga ask her. She has undoubted loyalty to him. Also back then it was dishonorable to lay with an outsider unless it was your "profession". Plus Maiko's character has always controlled her emotions, I don't think she would compromise herself just for one night with John.
