    As a Japanese speaker, the way and tone the heirs mother speaks with is absolutely skin crawling.

    I read the part about giving him the swords as Blackthorn taking "your words gave it meaning" to heart. He was told that the swords are worthless and dont have any real meaning, but he still gives them as a gesture because to do so is meaningful and the swords will be too because of it.

    Game meat like birds and others are hung like that to tenderize them. All those flies around, it might be too warm, though but it is done even to this day. Blackthorn isn't just dealing with culture difference but also social class. His dad was a poacher- a hangable offense in 1600 England. While Queen Elizabeth loved falconry, too, none of her game birds were being aged in smelling range of the Queen. Blackthorn, a sailor, is really one of the Beverly Hillbillies living with the California millionaires in this series. The gardener got killed but taking a pheasant from the palace kitchens in England is theft, also a hangable offense. What's happening here is culture difference, the Japanese had a huge a stigma toward animal slaughter and preparation industries. The people working in it were looked down on in spite of folks needing leather, grease, and oil, and even meat. However, there is also social class, Blackthorn might age a bird like this in his house but a wealthy English lord will likely have the work done were he and the rest of the toffs can't smell it, either.

    Those two…perfectly placed arrows on a post he couldn’t even see.. so perfectly shot thru the exact same hole.. kinda proves that no amount of sake was going to affect his actions. He ( Buntaro ) knew he completely in the wrong , and his honor prevents him from doing anything to anger his Lord Toranaga. Buntaro, acted rudely to say the least , in another man’s house. So he had to apologize.. ( he was still a milk dribbling fucksmear tho… lol ) as for the pheasant … if touch…die “. It was completely Anjin’s fault for not understanding that the weight of words is taken extremely seriously.. as Lady Mariko said, Anjin’s words gave weight to a “meaningless” bird. The earthquake may have just awoken abit of the Anjin’s heart & mind as to the earth-shattering, landslide inducing power of words.. eh? I love your reactions guys.. i love that this show is bridging an understanding between cultures. Thank you.. i look forward to more of your reactions!

    Toranaga’s spy was revealed at the end of episode one. Go back and watch it, just the last montage.
    Kiku may be working for someone, but we don’t know who yet. Or do we…? 👸🏻

    Fuji is my favorite character in this show, her facial expressions alone bring a smile to my face every time she is on screen. Mariko somehow is too Western, specially for a Japanese woman of this time period.

    It's not explained in the show, but losing his swords as the Shogun is a big deal. A warlord with no sword can't fight and it allowed a disgruntled Ronin and servants to walk away from a lord's service with honor during certain periods. I'm not sure if the pre-Edo was one of the periods this occurred, but it was an off-and-on thing over 1400 years.

    21:10 I find her words ironic considering every year she asks to be killed for something her father did that was, in her own words, " for the good of the realm", so that seems to be a contradiction. No wonder John was so confused!

    Great reaction but quit projecting Western morality on a civilization in the 1600. This is feudal Japan, and they live by Confucianism. Believe it or not, Confucianism gave us the "golden rule". Blackthorn is being the ass here. All He ever thought about was himself. Blackburn started the "pissing contest" at the dinner and Mariko got upset because John was disrespectful, not only to her husband, but to her as well. Although she hates him, he is still her husband. Blackthorn only came to Japan for the same reason as the Catholics...riches. Since this is based on real people, I don't want to reveal any spoilers. Whether it is the previous Sho-Gun or this one, I absolutely love this series. Great acting and writing. I love the period especially. Remember this is their country which has been in a 200-year civil war. Again, I love your reaction. Thank you. 😍😍❤❤

    That was a bit more pushy for the Lady Ochiba. But she simply doesn't trust Toranaga. He suspects her SECRET. But she Respects Toranaga much more than Ishido, who is a mere peasant.

    • @michaellockhart554
      @michaellockhart554 3 месяца назад +2

      Ishido isn't a peasent, he is actually noble born, in real history Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who became Taiko (in both thebbook and real life) was peasent born and worked up through the ranks

    • @americanandpinay
      @americanandpinay 3 месяца назад +3

      @@michaellockhart554 Ishido is based on Ishida Mitsunari. His father was Ishida Masatsugu, a regional lord in the Omi province under the rule of the Azai clan. Toronaga is Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Taiko at the beginning who dies is and leave the country in the hands of 5 reagents is Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

    • @michaellockhart554
      @michaellockhart554 3 месяца назад

      @@americanandpinay thought that is what I was pointing out, we agree, Toyotomi Hideyoshi started asaguru, peasent warriors, and though his cunning and intelligence worked his way through the ranks, Ishida wasn't as "high born" as Tokugawa claimed to be, but still noble born

    • @downunderrob
      @downunderrob 3 месяца назад +1

      It's stated many times throughout the book, that Ishido is not noble born.
      Yes, the Taiko was a peasant who gained Power.
      But because of his lineage, he could not be Shogun. Only, I think the term used is Kwampaku.
