Nikon D850 College Softball Photography 70-200 f/2.8

I bought a used Nikon D850 in 2024! The D850 is a great camera. It does not have some of the modern features that are common in today's cameras like eye detect autofocus but it does have a really great full frame back-side illuminated (BSI) image sensor with no optical low-pass filter and 45.7 megapixels. I bought the camera to do landscape photography and that sensor and the ability of the camera to go down to 64 ISO without going into an extended range should be great for that type of photography. Today I took the D850 to Frost Stadium in Chattanooga to photograph a college softball game between The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Furman. I used my old NIKKOR 70-200 f/2.8 G VR II lens. I managed to get some pretty nice shots with this semi-vintage gear. :) This is my second time working with the D850, one day I will use this camera for what I bought it for, landscapes.

Thanks, Stephen! Chattanooga went on to win the southern conference tournament and regular season championships. Then they went to the Tallahassee regional where at one point they had a two to nothing lead over Florida State, but in the end, they lost 3 to 2 and were put out of the NCAA tournament the next day by Auburn.

I kind of regret selling my D850 but it was just collecting dust on the shelf after I got the Z9 and started drinking the Z glass juice. Now the only F mount I have left is the Sigma 120-300 which pairs amazingly with that camera. Might be fun to pick one up again at some point and some of the less common f mount glass.

My F Mount regret is selling my Nikkor 105 2.8 macro lens and my Tokina 100 macro lens. But I have plenty of macro glass for other systems so I'll use them for macro season. I hope to use the D850 for what I bought it for, landscape photography, soon.

I prefer DSLR’s for sports photography. It’s always ready. Many times a photo opportunity would arise and my mirrorless is in sleep mode and takes a couple of seconds to fire up and I missed the shot.
