Thanks, Shane! There are a lot of instructors out there who cannot present CAGED simply and coherently. To me, the way you've shown it in this video is a great starting point. I don't feel so intimated by that freakin' acronym anymore!
"EXACTLY" ,,,,,,,,,,,,,TEACHING ITS A WONDERFULL THING AND A SKILL. DEMONSTRATING IS NICE TO LISTEN TO FOR ENTERTAINMENT. BUT THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
Wow. You really opened up the cage door on the caged system and made some beautiful music. Sounded a bit like Jerry Garcia jamming on Eyes of the World. Love it.
Great demonstration of a practical application of the caged system, Shane. I also like to play the associated pentotonic scale with each of the 5 shapes. I am going to apply this lesson to those scales, as well. Thanks, again for your helpful instruction.
Yes. I wish when I briefly had a teacher (moved a lot as a military brat) they had suggested also learning the open chords w/fingers 2, 3 & 4. Once that was learned they could just say, "Hey, now look at this".
“Your phrasing will come later, right now you’re just connecting the dots”. Wow, that really hits close to home. Sometimes I kind of forget this. Sometimes I need to remind myself this. Make sure I have the solid foundation flawless first before I start going down the rabbit hole of chasing down all the other little subtle details and nuances and getting sidetracked from the meat and potatoes of it. Great video as always Shane
Thank you for this advice Shane. Be it five caged forms, shapes, onward … as a beginner you grasp with joy as you take this musical journey. When a melody is actually heard, that’s a piece of heaven. It’s a beautiful addiction. Great guitar channel!
It’s great to have a new CAGED exercise that might actually become a song. On another topic, I build and repair tube amps, and usually have music in the shop. Today I pulled up your catalog in Apple Music and spun it all. Wonderful playing and arrangements! Especially Still Motion. Thanks again!
That was a great wee lesson. How to actually apply this stuff. I remember Joe Pass explaining it in Guitar player magazine many years ago. I think I’ve still got the magazine. Had a floppy record.
Great lesson, Shane! I have a MI book (“Guitar Fretboard Workbook” by Barrett Tagliarino) where CAGED is called “Root Shapes” and go from 1 to 5. For example, the CAGED “C” shape is Root Shape number 1 & so on. I find that using numbers makes it less confusing when communicating. Ex: “Play the E flat chord in the C shape” is not as clear as “Play the E flat chord in root shape 1”.. Strangely, Tagliarino’s subsequent books used the CAGED names. Which naming did you learn at GIT/MI in the 80’s? Thanks! 🎸
thanks Nick! I wasn't at MI in the 80's but in early 90's they used 5 shapes. I actually can't remember learning that though haha. Somewhere down the line I learned them. I think from actually learning the modes and I just connected them that way. But yeah using the numbers make sense for sure!
Seems like this useful exercise and memorization of these forms would give a new player more versatility and utility on the fretboard. You always play something pleasing to the ear, such a great instructor, Shane
I don’t think you’re capable of playing hokey Everything you play sounds awesome. Whenever you think it sounds hokey it just sounds cool and Lofi to me.

This was great. My ear was leading me there but I would get lost on the neck because I didn’t relate the scales to a chord form. Big help! Thanks.

yes, if you don't have the foundation in place you are gonna be working twice as hard to make music......

Shane you got more pocket than Jeff Bezos! Seriously a very cool video-- thank you!
haha that's a good one.
Hi Shane, thanks. Was that a backing track maybe on YT? Or did you loop it?
that's just a track I created in Logic. That one and a bunch of others will be available on a course I'm working on.
I don’t think you’re capable of playing hokey
Everything you play sounds awesome. Whenever you think it sounds hokey it just sounds cool and Lofi to me.
thanks I appreciate that
