I know I should be concerned about the overarching, connected story, but I can't stop thinking about how adorable it is that John decided "if I'm going to organize these, I'm damn well going to read and record every single one, for organizational purposes" *_and yet,_* he has no dicserable reason to be reading with such emotion. He shouldn't really have any good reason to abruptly cut himself off and get mad when people interrupt him, as if he was embarrassed or nervous he could get found practically acting out whole monologues.
Tl;dr, John likes narrating things, a guilty pleasure of his, if you will.
That's legit adorable
I love this, that's super cute.
So what you’re saying is... he’s a theater nerd? Because that’s absolutely adorable
YES I get so muchjoy from this man that, honestly, just seems to get a load of fun voice acting. It gives me a little bit of whiplash in episodes like, johns rock, that his voice from Statement Begins and reading the statement are SOOO different. and almost all the characters have such distinct voices and mannerisms, like, he read them through and tried to encapsulate the Feeling of the statement. For... organizational purposes cough cough of course. Its a great way to bridge the gap between "its a guy reading a thing and recording it for his work" and "we want the thing to still have ambience and be spooky"
.... okay thats fucking adorable. -U-
I imagine Martin waddling in like a five year old who’s been playing outside all way coming in to show his mom a handful of bugs or mud or something by wordlessly dropping them onto Jon’s lap/desk.

I can't help but laugh when Martin interrupts John. The pure, unadulterated rage and confusion in his voice just gets me. I think I've replayed it 7 times now.
I have too!! Scared me completely!!
Me too, probably the best part of these podcasts so far

if you recall back in ep4 (pageturner), the mysterious book that the episode delt with had an illustration of an empty sky that the statement giver said he "fell into it." i cant help but think it's related
Oh wow I didn't even make that connection
also harriette from squirm
Very good catch. As this comment was a year old saying "Ah, you found the Vast" probably won't spoil anything.

Martin's probably just showing his extensive vape collection to Jon. He's never seen a vape before, hence"WHAT ARE THESE THINGS?"
Martin coming in, with a stereo on his arm "where's my juul" blasting through the speakers
That sound at the end was the vape juice leaking.

Martin is indeed concerning.
Martin concerns me
MARTIN??? ARE YOU OK???
D:
FR HE HASNT SHOWN UP FOR WEEKS IS HE ALL RIGHT
Haven't heard the next episode yet, but I imagine this is "Martin's Revenge"
Well, more like "Jonathan Simm's comeuppance'. As soon as I heard Simm's snark that Martin would like provide nothing -except delays - I suspected that Martin would be pivotal to the narrative at some point.
I can just hear Martin in the next episode: "I'm sorry Mr. Simms, but I faked my illness to do some research. Here is the piece that fits into the hole of Graham's/Not Graham's table, you can see the carvings... and I found some worms that are definitely sketchy, and oh... here are some communion wafers made from human flesh, and also an updated catelogue for that library of doom, and pictures of a chapel with a grave yard that doesn't exist on the map, and - and...
Mr. Simms, are you feeling okay?'
@@DavidTShaw this is litterally what must of happened
This episode absolutely stands out to me, a lot of the time, horror that is conveyed with words alone are very, excessively descriptive to create a gruesome picture in your mind, but this episode’s main big spook is vague, and leaves much to the imagination. The idea of the sky “eating” someone is terrifying to picture. And what that means for Robert, is even more awful to think about.
its also that cosmic horror idea of witnessing something that is beyond description
It's very hard to make a mental image for, I wonder if some artist who's made an anamatic of it thought of a way to convey that image. Like genuinely how the hell would you even draw that?

I Swear to fucking God, at that last bit I could feel my spine freeze like a fucking icicle. I felt for a split second pure, undiluted fear, until Martin popped in. That was the most scared this series has made me yet. I love you guys so, so much.
The sound of the door opening scared the shit out of me. I had to rip my heads phone out. I scare easy.
for me (so far) its been the "take her not me" from lost Johns' cave
I was already pretty shaken by this story, but Martin got me really worried. I instantly thought of the worms and i hope he's ok
What are the worms everyone keeps talking about?
Also I'm new to the podcast so um I don't really know much yet. I started listening four days ago(which being said makes me thing I might have an obsession given that I'm already on episode 21)
@@nobody-ny2pjRemember the episode Squirm? Yeah.
"Can the sky eat people" made me giggle way to hard
First time listener here, just wanna say how grateful I am for everyone not spoiling anything. This is a really cool series and it’s great to see other people passionate about sharing it 😊
im listening to these alone in my bedroom, and the ending made me look over my shoulder
I was so into it I screamed or more like piped.
"he got really into skydiving" NOOOOOOO
Im so terrible with names so whenever characters pop up more than once I can’t remember where they came from. I don’t remember who Simon and Harriet are!!!!
A Harriet appeared as the person who exploded into many worms in the episode Squirm
They haven't been important before. Just remember the name Fairchild.
thats a different Harriet I think? Harriet Lee was in Squirm, and this is Harriet Fairchild?
I remember Harriet from Squirm, but do y’all know where Simon is from, as well as the name Fairchild?
@@_mel_9953 It's a different Harriet, and the name Fairchild hasn't been important before.
ok so I’ve been using these as sleep aids just to wind down with no lights on and get into sleepy mode and there’s never been a problem! I’ve always found the stories more compelling then scary, but this last bit literally had me shooting upwards in bed wtffff 😭
Also listening to these on Spotify without people piecing the plot together for me in the comments is hard but keeps things very interesting and spoiler free! Best way to listen to these tbh
Fr the music makes me sleepy since I also go to bed listening to this
Ooooh let me tell you when I say this scared me I mean this literally made my eyes tEAR UP from terror. Idk, this series had always been phenomenal, but something about the nature of this episode chilled me to the bone, just picturing the image of the endless sky, and I'm not even afraid of heights or anything like that. But as soon as he said the sky ate him, my eyes started to water up and my stomache dropped. DEFINITELY my favorite episode so far holy heck.
I want to like this comment but the likes are at 123 and I don’t want to ruin it. 😂
Honestly, it's weird but I'm starting to find Jon's sarcastic skepticism kind of adorable
Also, I was listening to this episode in class during zoom and my hand went to my mouth upon hearing the ending

I really love this epidoe. Something about vast blue sky being a fearful thing is really interesting.
But is it implied Fairchilds were scheming to acquire Robert Kelly or killed him off? As far as I know he is not mentioned again, but curious because I recall Fairchilds do not necessarily have familiar connection with each other.
Jon really sprinkled bits of plot far before 'the episode'
OH MY GOD!!!! The ending was SO beautiful!!! I LOVE IT!!! I almost DIED!!!! Keep doing what you're doing because it is finaminal!
HowA'boutThis ? *phenomenal
this is the first episode that has filled me with a horrific dread. the imagery of the sky is used perfectly and the vagueness of the “the sky ate him” line honestly just made me curl into a ball
martin was just excited to show jon his mud pie
Loved the imagery in this one - a lot of fun.
Edit: ah! Martin's back! That's disturbingly exciting!
Lol this episode reminded me of my niche childhood fear of falling into the sky (when upside down, especially)
Man non of the episodes creeped me out like this one. The last part of before martin walked in i have chills going down my spine.
OOOOOH listening back to this for the second time..... now hearing he's going to jump with 'Simon' and I'm like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOo
I'm a new listener and I just have to comment on this but MY GOD I love how each statement John reads it's delivered in different speech patterns and expressions like he's the very person who wrote the statement or as if he's shifted into a completely different character except for his voice! It's so cool :D
JUST FINISHED THE EPISODE AND THE DOOR OPENING JUMPSCARED ME AA
Tf Moira Kelly is the exact name of my freshman English teacher, it's not even a common name!
sounds like your freshman english teacher's son got eaten by the sky
did you ask if her son got eaten by the sky?
first time listening to the magnus archives. gotta admit, i’m very invested! i really hope that nothing too terrible happens,,,
I think it's absolutely brilliant that the Magnus Archives has a little something for everyone. Imagine seeing the sky for the first time as an ominous predator, now try imagining how this must've been for a person with an actual fear of the sky, and how this must've felt like something straight out of their nightmares. On to the next episode.
Looking at the comments, I see two sentiments: Martin interrupting John's recording his abrupt and hilarious, and the endless sky is reminiscent of Ex Altiorum. But can we just appreciate how fucking terrifying this statement is? Like yes this show is creepy, and it's good at being creepy, but for some reason this episode stands out to me the most out of the 100 or so I've listened to so far. It doesn't really play at a standard fear like arachnophobia, claustrophobia, or trypophobia like a lot of episodes in this season does, but instead it plays at a different sort of horror? It's not really a fear of the unknown. It's almost like it plays at the terrifying feeling of absolute helplessness. Robert couldn't do shit while falling. There was no ground to hit. Parachutes didn't work. he was just surrounded by sky, and that alone terrifies me, but the image of the fuckin *sky eating* the dude is almost worse for me. Just the idea of the sky somehow warping in a way to just take a guy and send him to that space of endless falling for eternity, that image that my mind can just barely imagine although not actually describe, freaks me the fuck out.
I love this episode.
First time listener. I think this is my favorite statement so far. I wanna be sent to The Sky Prison.
okay, out of all the stuff in this series so far, freefalling endlessly through the sky terrifies me the most
I have always considered myself to be a hard-to-scare type of person, as most horror evokes genuine fascination in me rather than fear, and this podcast was amazing at fascinating me, but this one, this is special. I have never experienced goosebumps as intense in my life when Jon said “The sky ate him”, and that’s saying something.
This episode reminds me of that quote from the secret history: “the sky a deep deep painful blue.”
we may not have heard martin talk before, but regardless-- if anything happened to him (or jon) i will jump out of a window

Loving the heck out of these episodes!
Had originally feared they would slowly loose their originality, but so far it seems I was mistaken^^
I believe I have figured out one of the spooky ambiences he uses. Bees. Or at least the bus of multiple bees. This realisation happened while I was on a walk and passed a wattle tree FULL of bees
Well, time to add "Falling/Sky" into the list of recurring motifs.
It now makes me wonder if those books by, Leitner(?) are informational text on various eldritch classifications. We had a sky book, and maybe 2 bone/gore books? I can't remember exactly, but I think the bone books were in different languages and one made blood, so maybe it's more specific than "classification".
Something that entered my mind as a possibility...
(because of Gerard destroying "sky-book" ; Gerard stopping "fire-man" ; Loving-Father sacrificing Hand-Eye people ; The Demon claiming the Priest as "marked" implying ownership)
What if some of these forces are opposed? Maybe some are... Not benevolent, but better to have around, maybe because they keep worse things at bay.
Something to consider...

holy shit, the statement itself only left me vaguely unsettled but the ending???? I'm straight-up terrified to continue listening 😱
"the sky ATE him" gave me chills and made me cry ngl
Are we not gonna talk about the fact that this statement is about R Kelly?
Okay, before I scream about the ending I want to talk about this statement. At first I thought that wasn't that bad of a fate - to die falling up the sky, like, it's much better than being crushed under hundreds of meters of earth or burning alive etc. But the fact that Robert worked in a company that didn't exist and there were little evidence of Robert himself existing.... that really intrigued me. Was he even alive/existing that whole time? Was that even Robert that came to his mother? If he wasn't then why was he so scared? Was he claimed by smth at the beginning and was that the last cry for help?... I'M SO CONFUSED AND WHAT ABOUT SIMON?!!!
Thanksss youtube.

I'm re-listening to this series for the third time and always like checking the comments to see what our very own Robert Smirke thinks. (Admittedly this one was pretty blatant.) :D Good to have you 'round, Mayor.
I love how hes so nice to tim who works so hard and "rly out did himself" and then theres martin
I'm enjoying this podcast thus far (first time listening), but why are the episodes so quiet? every time I have time to listen to an episode there's some loud thing going on in the background and I can hardly hear anything unless I turn my device's volume up as far as it goes
And then the end part happens and the dramatic music gets super load and you scream and fall out of bed
I'm not sure what made me think of this, but when the sky stole the son, i thought of it in the sense of... the sky wanting him for itself. he's spent so long skydiving, it finally decided to keep him for good.
i feel like the sky that swallowed him might be a beast of some sort that merely mirrored the color of the sky it hid in, and preys on sky divers
I know I'm new and very extremely late but let me just tell you something.
This episode sent shivers. literal shivers down my spine. just the thought of endlessly falling down a sky and then being eaten by it or however. it's just so... who would have thought such a way to scare people. and then the feeling of losing somebody (especially family) to that thing that connects them to what they enjoy doing is just so... frightening and yet so scary that even I'm scared to look at the sky.
well... what are these things
…I like this one because of how it shows that not everything that is terrifying is dark and shadowy. It feels like a sister episode to lost john’s cave. Apparently the fear of falling into the sky is called casadastraphobia.
I learned this from the video of the actors in NOPE going over fan theories. Daniel was like “who’s afraid of that tho?” Keke: “yeah like when did that happen that would make a person afraid of that?” Steven, disregarding how impossible it is and imagining what it would be like: “that would be terrible tho”
I didn't know the Magnus Archives would cover my fear of falling into the sky hh
the amount of emotion in jon's voice?????? he sounds motherly like i could hear the pain pls- i know he's clutching his heart acting these out lol
That’s by far the scariest episode for everyone who is scared by heights...!
