LEGO originally turned them down, but when the video became a hit LEGO changed their minds. They reached back out to Jack to agree to the deal. Gondry was probably forced by Jack to say that so people would spend time analysing every frame of the video.
That cut does look a lot different to the next bit (especially in lighting) but it's also taken from a different angle. If either one is CGI, it's well done.

I remember being home sick from school in 5th or 6th grade and watching MTV (when MTV actually played music videos) and seeing this for the first time. Never had seen anything like it and it was my introduction to The White Stripes. They soon became my favorite band after.

Why can't music videos be as creative as this?
Mainstream music videos today are wierd. It's either a guy/girl staring at the camera and singing the entire song in one shot, or a bunch of girls with booty implants wiggling it around.
There's just no market for it. In the age of MTV, there was plenty of use for complex, cool videos; that was more or less the most common way to advertise the album. But now we live in the days of RUclips, iTunes, and piracy and there's just no reason for the record labels to fork out upwards of $100,000 to put out the spectacles that music videos once were.

SkylitDriveFan123 I'd have to say that the Cage the Elephant video isn't as intriguing or original as all that. It's just shots of the band with some close ups of the singer and other band members in some vaguely psychedelic animation. All of that has been done to death at least since the Beatles with Yellow Submarine, probably longer. Along with that the only thing the Gorillaz even tried to do that hadn't been done before was tour and perform as an animated band which while technically innovative for a stage show is really not that innovative as a music video.
BTW, an artist being "completely of their time" is the entire reason some bands are remembered at all. It's not always a reason to forget them.

It was shot frame by frame with each frame having the LEGO bricks rebuilt, sometimes in a complex manner to seem as if it were an actual shot, and then formed together to give the illusion of motion.
