You left out the most glaring issue. When you make a contract with webnovel they own your book. For small time writers, that's not such a big deal but the right of the book are no longer in your hand.

I did mention it though. There is a link in the description to the contract analysis

Back when I was 17, they messaged me saying they wanna contract a book which I had written 3 chapters of with a prologue and extra bonus chapters.
However, my parents didn't agree to let me open a bank account back then so I couldn't do it.
I kinda regretted it back then because I just wanted to try and see how it's like to earn from a book, but I do recall the start of the contract included something like writing a chapter of at least 2k words within a short deadline or something for money that's only worth around 30k pkr (my currency in Pakistan) per month and on seeing the info in this video I feel like the work wouldn't be worth the effort, because once ur only down to mainly earning from royalties, they're probably gonna take a huge chunk from there too.

I was just using it because I found it and it was there. I was not aware that it was a bad option or that there were better options. I've never spent a single cent on it. I just support the authors as I can without spending money by voting with daily power stones and energy stones, using fast passes to get chapters for free, and giving a review of novels that I've read because I've heard that helps.

From what I know there is no way to cancel the contract with them unless they break some rule of the contract (in example by not paying you money in time.) I think if you already have your work contracted there's probably nothing you can do about it. Webnovel is bad but it's not the end of the world and you can always not contract your next work. Webnoveol is more for those who dont care about their rights to the book, like those seeking to just earn some money, or new authors who want experience or need a platform that offers promo. Webnovel does has its pros and cons, you just gotta decide which path is right for you. If your publishing on all platforms and want your rights, but still want to put it on Webnovel, don't sign the contract if you get sent one.

The worst part about Webnovel is their shady affliation and strange silence sometimes but what can you do. Nevertheless there are some novels on RoyalRoad that have succeeded that have their fans who are willing to pay for it. And likewise for Webnovel. For example RoyalRoad has The Stormlight Archive and Mother of Learning. Likewise Webnovel has My House of Horrors and Lord of the Mysteries. For authors who have hundreds of thousands of readers they'd already be satisfied with the cut their getting. It might be small but at least they'll survive with it.

0:37 I want to correct myself and say that I didn't take story comments into account. That would around double the hosting price, which still isn't a lot for a company with millions of users. Also I forgot to mention they most definitely cover all expenses with just the ad revenue, so everything else goes straight into their pocket.
1:35 Here, I should also say that you can enjoy your book being advertised only if you are within top few of the most earning authors. There are usually some competitions to decide that.

  • @SaSo-mk6yh
    @SaSo-mk6yh 10 месяцев назад +16

Web novel is popular because big chinese company supports it and since the name itself is the brand that lets it appear in curious readers search results. It is also most pirated site which can be bad sure but also allows for novels to be advertised elsewhere so could work in authors favour. Platform itself makes it easy for new novels to pick up views with heavy advertising and stuff but yeah contract conditions are harsh and would really need to dedicate good portion of time to keep up.

50% revenue is bad by the standards of game and video publishing, but it's incredible by the standards of publishing. Only really Amazon and other similar sites like WN can compete with that. Since you're wondering why people keep using the app, it's because WN pays well overall lol.
The breadth is also wide and the exposure is great.
Of course, most of the time, your story has to be marketable to do well. They have a BUSINESS and they have no obligation to cater to our ideals.
Like I said, think of it as a deal.
They naturally choose and promote books that make them money. In turn, you use their clout to get your book to a wider audience and earn from it.
So choose your platform well because some genres and tropes do better in other platforms

If I were to estimate (just MY estimate!), the standard FL writers that had built a fanbase (i.e. updated daily for a few months) should earn at least 400-600usd a month even if they no longer update daily (must still update a few times a week tho)
For MLs... I hear the Top 100 earn at least 1k USD a month, and Top 50 and top 25s earn MUCH higher than they do
