Gday from desert sth oz,great show with a great range of topics,Canadian snow board bottom turn style looks great in the surf, her back bends like like a teen slater, love the show keep the truth speak from the heart ❤️
Erin's win in Fiji as a wildcard has much larger implications IMHO. 1) She should've already been on tour all year. She got skunked with some poor conditions in a few events last year or she'd likely already have been in the top five of the CS and on the CT, but no. But unfortunately that's a common theme on the CS. And therein lies the problem. In fact, while unlikely, it's not outside the realm of possibilities that with some poor conditions or bad luck in the last two events this year Erin could drop out of the top five again. Can you imagine that tragedy? I mean Erin finished 9th last year on the CS and she just totally wrecked the entire CT field. She essentially demolished the "best surfers" on the planet and I'm not even sure she was close to testing her limits yet. Now that's scary. What other talented young surfers are missing out who should already be competing at the highest level but are missing entire CT seasons under similar circumstances? Vahine immediately comes to mind. And yes, I understand "someone" still has to win even in crap conditions. I get that. But I also get that maybe that "system" is a poor way of actually identifying AND nurturing the best talent. And Erin just proved my point...forever! WSL needs to take the top 10 from the CS and they need to do it starting **this** year 2) Erin should've been in the Olympics. Take everything i just said about WSL and multiply it times 10 for the ISA's qualification process. A process where Erin won a silver medal at one of their premier qualifications events, (very narrowly losing to Tati-who she just smoked in Fiji-at the 2023 ISA's in El Salvador), and yet Erin STILL couldn't qualify due to the convoluted nature of the ISA's rules and qualifications process. Or even worse, think about Sally who won GOLD at the Puerto Rico ISA's but also STILL couldn't qualify for the Olympics. Horrible. And I have zero doubt Erin had a legitimate shot at gold in Tahiti. What a tragedy. And the tragedy isn't so much that she wasn't at the Olympics, but why she wasn't there. That she wasn't there not due to being bested by better surfers, but by simply being skunked by crap conditions and also frozen out by a highly flawed process is the real tragedy. All just my humble opinion of course. PS. Great show as always fellas.
Thank you Lamar and you know the back story more than me mate thats for sure but appreciate you sharing all that info. Re the Olympics and qualification those rules and situations apply to all sports with limited qualifications from any country so that they can have more countries regardless of the talent pools in certain countries. It is what it is for me and try to see the positives thanks again mate.
@@barton_lynchI'm not sure I know of another Olympic sport where you can win one of the qualification events and not either qualify outright, or at least gain points towards qualifying. Surfing is the only one I'm aware of where athletes are required to compete in qualification events that they cannot by rule qualify in even if they win it outright. I could be wrong but regardless it's still a mess IMHO. Anyway, great job as always fellas.
@@lamar_actual Thanks again mate, as I understand it the reason is that there are only two athletes allowed per country per sport and so if there are 3 qualified from the same country then the 3rd rated surfer misses out, they do it that way so there is diversity and inclusion for multiple countries. As you can imagine there are countries who dominate in say the marathon who have more than two of the best long distance runners in the world who also miss out because only the top 2 can go, that is my understanding of how it works. Thanks again for watching.
@@lamar_actualagree on every point. While on the subject of the Olympics , I think it’s absurd that Italo wasn’t on the Brazil team and Felipe was. Erin isn’t even near her full potential, my feeling is she will evolve surfing more than any women OR man
@@mannmusica Erin and her parents are definitely smashing all of the paradigms so I agree there. She's going to push the limits like never before. As for Italo that's kind of a tough one. I definitely do agree that he should have had an opportunity to defend his Gold medal so long as he didn't drop below a reasonable standard of competition. Which he didn't. But the Olympics cockamamie idea to mesh tiers, using WSL as Tier 1, only added to the confusion in the process and created these absurd circumstances. There was simply no way in their qualification system to pass on Filipe when he was the number one ranked Brazilian in the world on the CT at the time (2023). Even knowing that in big Cloudbreak he certainly would NOT have been a top 3 choice among the Brazilians under normal circumstances. Why top 3 Brazilian? Well we must factor in that Gabriel didn't actually qualify **because** he won Gold in Puerto Rico per se, but instead he "qualified" because by winning gold in Puerto Rico he helped team Brazil win the 2024 ISA Team Gold. Which in turn earned the Brazilian team their 3rd spot for the Olympics. And then in turn the team named Gabe as their 3rd surfer. (Note: Kirra Pinkerton achieved the same feat for the USA women's Team at the 2022 ISA's which is how Caity "qualified" for Team USA. Kirra wasn't as lucky as Gabe to be named for her efforts I guess but then again who in their right mind would pass up naming Caity? Yet, just even more pandemonium added into this whacky process) So some things definitely need to change. I don't have all of the answers but it absolutely cannot remain as is It should not be possible that you can outright medal at an ISA qualification event and that by rule going in it counts for absolutely nothing towards you qualifying yourself. This happened at least four times this past Olympic cycle: 1. Kirra - 2022 ISA Gold 2. Erin - 2023 ISA Silver 3. Sally - 2024 ISA Gold 4. Gabe - 2024 ISA Gold If ISA and Olympics don't change this aspect of their process then I would boycott their events if I were an athlete. I mean if I were an athlete being told I "must" compete in an event where I am barred by rule from qualifying or even earning points towards my own qualification, then my answer would be, "no thanks, not until you fix your process." All just my humble opinion of course.

Let’s speak the truth, the WSL won’t hold the final round at Pipeline because Medina, Italo, and the other guys from Brazil have a far less chance (Felipe no chance) to beat guys like JJF or Jack. Also if the swell is mainly Backdoor guys like JJF, Jack, and other elite barrel riders would beat the top Brazilians 70-80% of the time. It’s a different beast than those perfect left hand spots like Fiji and Teahupoo. Actually I think Chianca is the best all around barrel rider from Brazil so he’d have a better shot at Pipeline than the others. Really solid technique both forehand and backside. Same with the women as well, you can eliminate most surfers before it even starts if it’s at Pipe but that’s the ultimate spot and should be the final location. Could run it early January, like the 7th-15th for waiting period, and then kick off the season in late January at Sunset so the CT schedule isn’t altered much.
We agree completely that pipeline should be the final event of the tour, no question. And there are others suggesting that WSL was having a hard time selling the sport in the US with all the Brazilian victories and they wanted to get JJF, Robbo, Ethan, Griff in the top 5 and not have the continued Brazilian dominance so they had better sales opps.
The incredible rise of Erin Brooks continuing. Won the Fiji pro at a canter, without utilizing her trump card air game, blasting all the worlds best female surfers away. Makes a mockery of the upcoming final 5 event 😅 The ability of Brooksy to surf waves of consequence as if she is in the wave pool is staggering.

Goofy footers are clearly better than regular footers now in 2024 and in the future. Medina, Brooks, Italo, C Marks, Yago. The proof is in the pudding.
The final 5 format blows. That said, JJF secured the top spot before Fiji was even pau. When they showed the points going into Fiji Griff was in second and only like 2k points behind JJF. JJF blew Fiji and Griff took it out. My question is: in the traditional points system would Griff be ahead now? Cause the truth is, NO fifth place loser should ever be given a TITLE shot on a single day, period, but if Griff is legitimately in point contention then a JJF vs Griff showdown could be a legitimate contest, unlike how Riss was robbed by season losers who weren’t even close to her. The final five makes having a season pointless otherwise.
@mikeuptegrove agreed, they are trying to manufacture excitement. So what if the best surfer wraps up the title early. Makes the years when it does come down to the last event or final proper exciting
