Thekilleroftanks Well, it depends on the design of the 'boarding' projectile, and it's speed. Could you imagine a projectile which has an outer shell, and then the 'inner' shell is actually suspended in say, water, or some kind of mechanical suspension with air-tight pockets on a 'piston' configuration to allow the shell inside containing personnell to come to a more gradual stop as the viscosity of liquid, or the buffer of air, like jumping on a water bed or air mattress would cushion the deceleration. Anything is possible with enough ingenuity.
I had a speed shot railgun turret that sent "special" projectiles through 16 layers of heavy armor, it fired 5 shots a minute and was accurate to 10KM. This is still really cool though!
then again they are firing a 1 inch by 1 inch little tiny block of solid titanium. hell i seen someone fire a rail gun with a car battery and broke a bullet speed meter, which went up to like 999 MPH... think about the speeds if you have that thing run off of nuclear fusion.
have you tried putting a warhead 2-3 blocks in? I figured it would do more damage to the ship if the mass penetrated the first few layers of armour then exploded in the tight space it had created.
this weapon could be integrated into the front of a war ship very well especally i you could manage to make a automatic replacer/reloading system. also would it work a little bit better if you put armored blocks at the front??

So at the moment I stick with letting friends go through it and using them as experimental rats that are used to test the perfect Buffer Gate... You could try building a "exit gate" type deal where there is a gate (one preferably looking like the Jump Gate) but with a longer & bigger tunnel, with less gravity facing AWAY from where your going. Thus making it so when you get out of the 'Jump' you enter the tunnel of smaller gravity gens, slowing down the craft, but not strong enough to send it flying away.

I have a feeling this design can possibly be used as a jump drive at a space port, for small ships that don’t have one. Or possibly a shell that a player can ride into the target and board it.
My main question is why is it so long? Is it just for looks, or does that serve a purpose? Because it seems like you could just stuff all the necessary gravity generators into a small area and make it much more compact. Now obviously that would require more gennies for the acceleration as some of them would not have as long of an arc and for the ideal setup where all the acceleration happens almost instantly within a couple of blocks (this would make aiming/leading much easier if it almost immediately went up to max speed) you would need a LOT of gennies since they can't do more than 1g (I think?), but it would be the most functional. Also, kind of more curious about what it can do vs. heavy armor. Obviously no target is going to realistically have light armor, everyone seems to use heavy in mp. I'm guessing it's not great because it didn't apear to do any better damage to your light armor target than a small ship rocket. Honestly I really hate how the devs have seemingly purposefully made the warheads and gravity weapons useless for combat (especially warheads, I mean, wow) even though weapons requiring them require much more skill both to build and use. They should be orders of magnitude better, from a gameplay perspective, but I suspect they've indirectly nerfed them to force people to use the preset weapons and hide some of the lag and bad netcode/physics simulation that show up when you use the custom built weapons. If you do a new video and are looking for a topic, I'd personally like to see large and small ship rockets, small ship warheads, large ship warheads, and kinetic projectiles accelerated up to max speed all against large ship heavy armor for a comparison of the damage done. One use you might get for this if you compress the acceleration range down is as a chase gun on a large ship. Put in a jump drive (just a gravity drive) so you can get up to max speed quickly and ensure your enemy is tailing after you, put one of these on the back with a auto feed mechanism so you can get a couple good shots (there are lots of ways to do those instead of manually loading and reloading, turning fields on and off, etc) and get up to double the velocity if you have enough gennies. Your enemy is coming at you at max speed and you can fire the projectile back at them at the same. I had not heard about rocks no longer causing collisions (and honestly have to wonder if its something buggy with your game instead of something the devs did) but it would be perfect fo that, with a couple of collectors or ejectors spitting rocks into the field for a gravity machinegun. It would obliterate anything behind you.
You can do a LOT more with a lot less. It's way larger then it needed to be, but at the time we were going for something that looked the part as much as worked. You can get the same performance with far fewer gravity generators and a far smaller size. On a side note however, we found the longer "barrel" helps with projectile stabilization when firing using the "pull" technique.
Synix What if you could put a timed explosive charge inside the shell? I'm not sure if they have that option yet. If they do, you could find some way to attach them, so the kinetic energy punches a big hole in the target's hull then the charge detonates inside shortly after. In concept, it should cause an even more massive hole in the ship..
Almost there with a first Gravimetric Impeller cannon! I wish my PC can run this game so much better because I love railguns a lot as well as capital ships and dreadnoughts. Using gravity wells to accelerate the projectile is the best method. A possibility to make them more powerful is to add a robust system to help carry more gravity power through the generators. If there was a way to make the round have a twist like rifling in a gun i5 would definitely be way way more accurate. Keep up the good work! Such an innovative design.
@Synix, I also built a railgun inside one of my ships. Sadly, i cannot say that it was inspired by this video; but of my own design. It's built using some different technology, but I think you would appreciate it anyway lol. I built 2 rounds so far, one High Explosive round composed of mostly light armor with a heavy piercing nose with warheads inside of it. The round I'll be showing you is that Armor Piercing round. It's designed to go straight through any ship's armor, and in most cases, the round will go straight through the ship and break apart inside the ship causing lacerating damage inside. The round travels at ~700m/s right out of the barrel and slowly increases speed due to a single azimuth thruster in the back. We tested it's accuracy at 107,000m away to try to hit one of my dreadnaughts. We came within 4 blocks of the hull. The shell was going 1000m/s at this time (I have a light speed mod in my world to achieve these speeds). But enough talk, here are some pictures of the ship, barrel, round, and mechanism of how we reload the round (The round is also constructed out of large ship blocks). if you could get the javilins firing straight you might be able to rig up javelins with a warhead in the rear that will explode on impact potentially driving the javelin further into the target
I usually suggest testing weapons on heavy armor. Very few combat ships are made with light armor exteriors, at least a double layer of heavy is common for large ships. Better penetration on the light armor than I expected though, would be interesting to see what you can make it into further, and if you can add a magazine system to it.
I'm imagining that if you were to launch a second shell and this one were to get a warhead, not strictly on the tip of the shell but possibly a bit back, it would do more damage.
Imagine making a warp drive using this idea. Having a full sized ship pass through it, shut off inertia dampeners, and have a rock in the center or something to speed it up to a high speed, and bam you can easily get to your friend's base that's 1000 km away
I like the design, I'd use it with a much longer barrel and integrate it into a ships spine, and if they allow it on a future patch, slave the fire button to the captains terminal so he doesn't need to say "fire"
All the weapon types are technically mass drivers or coil guns but a hella fun to use I have one that is a ship for now the mass driver MKI that can penetrate 10 layers of light armour and keep going. The shell itself weighs about 200k+ kg and is fired at full velocity
To piggy back off of that statement; Maybe he could set up a slider within the shell that would slam forwards, launching a couple of rocks or ores forwards and out? It wouldn't be too aerodynamic or compact but it'd do a lot of damage to larger targets.
You could have smaller ships or turrets around it to defend it in large space battles. (Or put machine turrets on the back so it can defend itself from incoming missiles.)
The artificial mass blocks make it a lot easier to pull of now. Managed to similarly fire a shell with 20 m of barrel length to an (obviously modded) 2km/s. Pretty impressive doing it without the art. mass blocks!
You could use this as a travel mechanism, i mean you just shoot yourself at a station and that station (if it is compatible) has gravite generators facing the other way to slow you down when you arrive.
vreat idea i would may have tried to put the war head in the back of the projectile to damage the area around the impact site so say its a ship that has hanger and you somehow managed to land the round in the hanger the explosion would damage the area around it.
Is this up on the workshop? Cause I'd personally like to take a look at it and maybe fiddle with it for my purposes.(if that's ok). Btw: great design. It looks a lot different than many others I've seen, and it definitely looks the part. ;) Great Job man.
i made one of these b4 but the version i made wasn't a turret. i made it to be part of a ship which was kinda janky but heck it worked but i could fire up to a 20k kg rock at a speed that wont register damage to targets oddly enough but these concepts are alway fun to tinker around with. at the end of it i used a torpedo that had mass block, reactor, storage(with 20k kg rock in it), nuke, and a gyro. when the nuke/warhead went off it would destroy the storage and this massive rock would pop out and do quite a bit of damage. try it out
I was thinking what if you put a small cargo container on the front of the projectile, filled with rocks or explosives, so that when the projectile impacts the cargo is destroyed releasing the rocks or explosives inside of the impact area. Devastating?
Dude! That is a sweet rail gun. Any chance you can make a video of it hitting an actual ship? With heavy and light loads? I can't wait to get home and buy this game.
Awesome turret mechanism, Synix. You probably already thought about this, but couldn't you reduce the radius for your grav generators so that they cut off outside of the breech? That way you wouldn't have to worry as much about getting sucked down the tube.
I like this idea, very innovative, but dose it work on moving targets? I.E. a ship coming toward the station? I notice that if you have the Inertial dampeners turned off Kinetic impacts are less effective?
I myself made basically the same design (OBV NOT EXACTLY THE SAME) for a turret on a main battle cruiser except I greatly experimented with more destructive ammunition. What i did was use an artificial mass block or more than one in the place of the rock and did in fact come up with a 2 stage ammunition, the first stage was the kinetic damage and the second once the hull of the target was pierced was a large ship warhead to do internal damage
I was thinking about what ammunition could be used and I think it's possible to make it fire automatically by just placing a connector on the back to spew out your rocks. I don't have the game myself (yet), so I'm just suggesting it to a random person who already has a gravity canon. that person is you MOONMAN Gaming
martijn smit Yes, that does work, however, the problem I had with that is the rocks that come out of the connector are very small. Meaning, they don't really do that much damage, even at high velocity they just kinda no-clip through the armor. However, with sustained fire, and the little rocks bouncing around enough, they do cause some respectable damage in there. One thing I found though is that that method is extremely accurate and therefore suitable for +1000 meter shots so it would make a good siege weapon.
martijn smit yeah however what i specifically did did not use rocks which is why mine was different. In the game there is what is called an artificial mass block and a warehead (bomb) block. now what the artificial mass block is, is a block simply affected by gravity. I had 2 welders placed so when i placed the arty mass block joined to the warehead it was auto welded. the advantage of this over just rocks is like i said firstly the kinetic damage and the explosive damage from the warhead.
MOONMAN Gaming I know, dude, and it is a great idea. However, I think martijn was just inquiring about what other types of ammo could be used and he mentioned rocks which is why I was explaining the pros and cons of rocks. Your method is completely different and in all honesty is probably way better than using rocks, I was just explaining to him.
Well a planetary bombardment system or PBS, would need to use gravity systems and would need to be able to stay in orbit. And with advanced gravity system that's gonna be harder because it pulls down... I think but anyway stay out of gravity field of the planet and you should be fine
If you were to add thrusters to the shells everywhere but the front and back, it would fly in a straight line to the target (or better yet, kamikaze shells)
you should wire lights so it looks more sci-fy-ey like you know like it's charging and the lights go in sequence faster and faster until it fires. aside from that I would have rounded the corners on a few spots to make it look more like it had some kind of power cells at the back. Also I wonder how it would react if you used a spherical object that you could put a bay door on and then drop a rock into it and close the door. it would looks more like a canon ball lol. I would like to see a video explaining the more technical aspects of it. like timing of the grav-gens and stuff.
Until the moment that you said the gravity only effects rocks I was thinking this could be an awesome prototype for a "Jump Gate" that would launch a ship that flew into it. Sadly, only rocks as of that patch.
I know of a man that has built one that works, his only problem is slowing down the ships without shredding them/ sending them to oblivion, I just suggested using a weaker, bigger, reversed jump gate to slow them down, no reply as of yet.
@@trevordillon1921 Not sure what you mean by "refined execution", and they operate quite differently. A railgun forms a continuous conductive loop with the projectile completing the circuit, with the whole thing acting as a giant coil that's trying to straighten itself out since all the conductive parts repel each other; the same force that propels the projectile also tries to force the rails apart. They're simpler to make than coilguns, but the projectile having to be in contact with the rails can cause issues like rail erosion or warping. A coilgun uses electromagnetic coils wrapped around the barrel to accelerate the projectile; though each coil has to be reinforced to prevent itself from forcibly straightening out for largely the same reason as above, no contact with the coils is needed for propulsion, meaning the gun's barrel can be made of whatever material is preferred, or even use magnetic levitation (which is what I was referring to in my original comment).
I saw a video in which a guy had a container at the back of his ship which he opened to disperse rocks as makeshift flares behind him. I'm wondering if it is possible to switch you loading mechanism with such a container to create a automatic railgun. Haven't played the game though so I have no idea of the possibilities.
...what if you put a warhead in the back that would slide forward upon impact? I don't really play this game, but if that's possible you could pretty much get a second impact...would have to be more careful with your ammo though.
The only problem is that small ship warheads are virtually useless vs large ship/station armor thus we went with kenetic. Also we're tried out this concept and the force of acceleration detonates the internal warhead if not secured... :( (Haven't tried to much with ammo variations yet though)
I'm no genius in physics but if you turn off the railgun right when the warhead gets to the end of the barrel wouldn't that keep the warhead from going wobbly? way I see it, it goes wobbly at the end because the gravity generators pull on the rock back a bit sapping the kinetic power just slightly when it try's to leave, I may be wrong but that's just my point of view.
You could add a gyroscope on the projectile in order to stabilize it. Do you have a steam workshop page ? I would really like to test that gauss canon !
What about converting this in a Orbital Canon? Would that be possible? And why did you power all Gravity gens on 1 g? If you increase the gs every stage you get further away from the Projectile bay it could be faster(when you installed the no v limit mod) then this setup, because the Gravitygens that have been passed are going to decrease the Speed. Or you just install a Sensor(if there is one) after every gen stage that automatically deactivates the Generators. I hope I am right, but if not please correct me, I wanna know why
Honestly I think that would be pretty easy, especially with all the new features they've added to the game. I made this video over 4 years ago now when the game was still really new and there weren't many options available. As for setting the gravity gens, i'm 90% sure(it was a while ago) that 1g was the max you could set them too back then and mods weren't a thing yet.
technically this is using the same concept as a coil gun vs an actual rail gun. but over all love the concept and execution i'm going incorporate a design similar to yours into a long range attack ship thanks.
I was thinking... you could build a ship around the railgun part, and use the gravity cannon as a ship-to-ship secret weapon (google "star wars eclipse"). And another thing, could I use gravity generators to deflect an incoming kinetic attack, as a deflector of sorts?
"...I suppose I could count. Let's see, we have... 106 gravity generators. Hm, that would make sense for 106 g..."

Imagine making a warp drive using this idea. Having a full sized ship pass through it, shut off inertia dampeners, and have a rock in the center or something to speed it up to a high speed, and bam you can easily get to your friend's base that's 1000 km away
could you put it on steam workshop?!
nice profile pic man
I like the design, I'd use it with a much longer barrel and integrate it into a ships spine, and if they allow it on a future patch, slave the fire button to the captains terminal so he doesn't need to say "fire"
All the weapon types are technically mass drivers or coil guns but a hella fun to use I have one that is a ship for now the mass driver MKI that can penetrate 10 layers of light armour and keep going.
The shell itself weighs about 200k+ kg and is fired at full velocity
11:05 he finally shoots with it.
So I'm not the only one to use this concept. Damn I was going to use that as the thing that makes my ships special
Awesome bro
you could use the two sets of landing gear to hold separate shells and then fire one after the other
I would call it a rail gun just because it sounds cool!
Have to tried putting the warheads in the rear of the projectile?
More like an actual Gravity Gun. Really cool.
If you think about it a passing hostile ship will see the railgun as a type of communication array. The moment you fire they will be running.
Have you considered mounting a camera behind a sight and aiming from the camera for increased accuracy?
You could use this as a travel mechanism, i mean you just shoot yourself at a station and that station (if it is compatible) has gravite generators facing the other way to slow you down when you arrive.
vreat idea i would may have tried to put the war head in the back of the projectile to damage the area around the impact site so say its a ship that has hanger and you somehow managed to land the round in the hanger the explosion would damage the area around it.
How is he seeing all the private ships so far away?
can u put this cannon to download at thesteam workshop plz its awsome
LSG's tga-w can penatrate 10 light armor
Is this up on the workshop? Cause I'd personally like to take a look at it and maybe fiddle with it for my purposes.(if that's ok). Btw: great design. It looks a lot different than many others I've seen, and it definitely looks the part. ;) Great Job man.
why dont you make the ammo tip light and put a warhead in the midle
looks like this thing could fuck up someones day xD
i made one of these b4 but the version i made wasn't a turret. i made it to be part of a ship which was kinda janky but heck it worked but i could fire up to a 20k kg rock at a speed that wont register damage to targets oddly enough but these concepts are alway fun to tinker around with. at the end of it i used a torpedo that had mass block, reactor, storage(with 20k kg rock in it), nuke, and a gyro. when the nuke/warhead went off it would destroy the storage and this massive rock would pop out and do quite a bit of damage. try it out
I was thinking what if you put a small cargo container on the front of the projectile, filled with rocks or explosives, so that when the projectile impacts the cargo is destroyed releasing the rocks or explosives inside of the impact area. Devastating?
Can't you use a connector and a storage box to spew out smaller rocks to the reciever instead? It would result in an automatic rail gun.
Can you use it for launching passenger pods?
my question is does he use block groups for all the gravity generators because when I tried making one it didn't work
Hope someone will see this comment 2 years later but, is that a mod he is using for that color of blue and black?
Nope, it's what happens naturally when you try and paint heavy armor with a dark blue or any dark color. Sorry for the delay. :P
+Synix Heavy dark armor, thx
im here two years later
Dude! That is a sweet rail gun. Any chance you can make a video of it hitting an actual ship? With heavy and light loads? I can't wait to get home and buy this game.
So you have a how to make this or similar
This video is 4 years old.
Surely there are _considerably_ better designs out there by now.
Could you launch a ship in that style? Not that fast but could you??
You could use a none recoil ramp like the target shooting c.n.c.engineering rail gun.
I notice that if you have the Inertial dampeners turned off Kinetic impacts are less effective?
couldn't u keep it permanently loaded so if u were to get attacked all u would have to do is aim it and turn the power on?
how you can turn your ship ?
Could you fire a full 15 tonne storage container?
Zachary Wilmes that's great.
The future of space engineers is here :P
martijn smit yeah however what i specifically did did not use rocks which is why mine was different.
Your method is completely different and in all honesty is probably way better than using rocks, I was just explaining to him.
a ship that could mount one of these and have other weapons as well and still move would absolutely rule the asteroid field.
What if you make it a ship?
Nice video
Now that there's planets, I'd really like to make a planet wreaking railgun, but I need a little advice.
Well a planetary bombardment system or PBS, would need to use gravity systems and would need to be able to stay in orbit. And with advanced gravity system that's gonna be harder because it pulls down... I think but anyway stay out of gravity field of the planet and you should be fine
+Will Brack --- What about some sort of Halo-inspired 'glassing' system?
+Ian That wouldn't be possible without mods actually.
Awww. Damn, I really wanted to see a planet being glassed in Space Engineers. lol
Have the projectile be small storage crates filled with explosives.
If you were to add thrusters to the shells everywhere but the front and back, it would fly in a straight line to the target (or better yet, kamikaze shells)
you should wire lights so it looks more sci-fy-ey
like you know like it's charging and the lights go in sequence faster and faster until it fires. aside from that I would have rounded the corners on a few spots to make it look more like it had some kind of power cells at the back.
Workshop download?
hello from 2019
*waves*
More like a coilgun than a railgun, IMHO.
The operate on the exact same principle. Railguns and coilguns both use magnetic fields, railguns are just a more refined execution.
A coilgun uses electromagnetic coils wrapped around the barrel to accelerate the projectile; though each coil has to be reinforced to prevent itself from forcibly straightening out for largely the same reason as above, no contact with the coils is needed for propulsion, meaning the gun's barrel can be made of whatever material is preferred, or even use magnetic levitation (which is what I was referring to in my original comment).
how do you make the rounds? i dont know how to put a rock inside the round
I saw a video in which a guy had a container at the back of his ship which he opened to disperse rocks as makeshift flares behind him. I'm wondering if it is possible to switch you loading mechanism with such a container to create a automatic railgun.
Haven't played the game though so I have no idea of the possibilities.
13 minutes of waffle, few seconds of action.
+XarKavier Waffle?
+Landon Jones Maybe he was eating a waffle?
Kappa
you could do a similar design and make a MAC Cannon...... what do you think about that?
...what if you put a warhead in the back that would slide forward upon impact?
I don't really play this game, but if that's possible you could pretty much get a second impact...would have to be more careful with your ammo though.
The only problem is that small ship warheads are virtually useless vs large ship/station armor thus we went with kenetic. Also we're tried out this concept and the force of acceleration detonates the internal warhead if not secured... :( (Haven't tried to much with ammo variations yet though)
Could you do a ammo belt feed? Like a magazine?
I'm no genius in physics but if you turn off the railgun right when the warhead gets to the end of the barrel wouldn't that keep the warhead from going wobbly? way I see it, it goes wobbly at the end because the gravity generators pull on the rock back a bit sapping the kinetic power just slightly when it try's to leave, I may be wrong but that's just my point of view.
Have you finished a newer version yet? It would be awesome to see an improved version of this.
could this work with artifical mass?
Seems like a lot of work to fire a round and in a fire fight i doubt it would be practical
I don't think it's for firefights.
howd he get that colour?
And put the warhead in the back of the shell so you can detonate it w a follow up shot
anywhere you can DL this?
i miss playing this game with my best friend, too bad things change and people too...
remember me and him watching this and me saying we should recreate it, gravity in this game is the most fun thing to play with imo
You could add a gyroscope on the projectile in order to stabilize it.
Do you have a steam workshop page ? I would really like to test that gauss canon !
We found the gyroscopes don't work unless there are thrusters. AT least that's how it was when we made this. Unfortunately I don't have a workshop.
Oh, yes, thrusters...
Well, it's awsome anyway. I guess I'll have to build my own one.
MrGrumf I'm sure it'll be better too. ;]
are the gaps between the accelerator arms a must?
Gamma Prysem to improve on my last statement i have just built a more compact version of this built into a ship
Have you updated this design since they added mass blocks? Or do you use the rocks because the mass is larger?
I haven't really played the game since I made this video, Been hooked on Heroes and Generals.
Synix But it's p2w crap.
Space Engineers -Railgun/Gravity Cannon- Concept
If you just want to see the damn thing fire, already.
Can I download it?
When I played Eve Online, I first saw the Warpgates. I thought, It would be a cool Idea to make a Gravitygun out of it. And then I found this vid
I was thinking... you could build a ship around the railgun part, and use the gravity cannon as a ship-to-ship secret weapon (google "star wars eclipse").
And another thing, could I use gravity generators to deflect an incoming kinetic attack, as a deflector of sorts?
