It doesn't work like that, take small jobs, go manage the B team or the kids from academy and work your way up, it's in the academy where you have more chances to actually develop a playing style and put it into practice, Pep did it, Mourinho was an assistant for many years before taking up the big job, many have done it and i think it's the only way to get better as a manager.

I think a lot of the problems with many former great players failing as Managers (like FL) is that they haven't served a lengthy enough apprenticeship under a quality manager(s) with a winning mentality, or they don't have the natural personal attributes to be a winning manager. It was early in FL managerial career at Chelsea you could see he wasn't going to be a winning Manager, and stupid Everton did not do their due diligence before employing him! I think a lot of these EPL clubs are reactive rather than proactive in identifying Managers with a winning mentality - sometimes you have to do the hard yards to uncover the diamonds in the rough.

He's taking the wrong jobs. He thinks he's a top manager and he's proven he's not at the moment but who knows in the future. If he still wants to succeed as a manager he'll have to go down a league or two and learn

Football clubs need to look at managers that are not big names.
There are quite a few good young managers who just need an opportunity and they can become the next big name.

I personally wouldn't hammer frank yet. At Derby - he didn't get them promoted but was close and look at the issues behind the scenes. You could argue he did a good job but maybe the benefit of the doubt. Chelsea - transfer embargo and I thought he did a very good job. Put it this way, 6 months after he left they won the champions league. Yes Tuchel is a better coach but I don't think that makes Frank a terrible one. Then at Everton. Benitez (a champo winning manager) struggled and frank basically achieved the same. Both his last 2 jobs have been very challenging and did in my opinion decent, not great but decent in them. Does that mean Rangers? It's a club that could only attract Michael Beale last time so in the grand scheme it's an average team and he's an ok manager. But I think Simon's probably being too harsh for me. For Rangers he's fine. For top clubs (no disrespect but I'm talking champo level), not for me.

I have a question. So, why has Ange Postecoglu been able to take a young team, with many new faces while instilling a completely different brand of football than the previous manager, had so much success, but Chelsea, under Poch, with a similarly young team, with (more) new faces playing a new style of football vs last year, have comparatively struggled?
Ironically, the answer might lie with Ange. He has said repeatedly that there will be some bad moments. He has said that fundamental change takes time to permeate into a new squad. At Celtic, he lost 3 of his first 6 games.
Don’t get me wrong, what is going on at Spurs is a fantastic story. But maybe, just maybe, Spurs are over performing and over time, they will revert back to the mean of expectations. And Chelsea are under performing and over time, they too will revert to the mean of expectations.

Frank Lampard is not a football manager. He's been given jobs because of his reputation as a player.
Nobody mentions the vastly more qualified Scott Parker in these conversation ONLY because he was a less glamorous player and played at less glamorous football clubs.

DISAGREE - He overachieved at Derby.... he went into Chelsea with a transfer ban and overachieved there (had to rely on academy players and got us into top four - we all know how hard it is to get into top four let alone do it with academy players and a transfer ban). He went to a very poor Everton side where no manager has been able to get them winning - Anchelotti tried, Rafa tried and now Sean Dyche is trying. We can say that no manager at Everton has been able to succeed over these recent years (a lot of that comes down to recruitment). He then goes into a Chelsea team that was struggling under Thomas Tuchel(one of the best managers in the world) and Graham Potter(another top manager, that even Pep came out and said he is the best English manager). By the time Frank went into the Chelsea job our season was done. The players were waiting for the season to be over. No manager would have wanted to take that Chelsea interim job as it was a sinking ship all season. But Frank wanted to help and do his best at his club - he didn't have to do it, but he tried(every manager in the world would struggle, like Frank did, like Graham did, like Tuchel did.
