  • Fly by Night Guitar Lesson | Note for Note Guitar Tutorial | Rush | with TABS (Alex Lifeson on guitar)
    Fly by Night is a song on second studio album (same name - Fly By Night) by Canadian rock band Rush, released in February 1975 on Mercury Records. It was the first Rush album to showcase elements of progressive rock for which the band has become known. It was also the first to feature lyricist and drummer Neil Peart.
    The music was written by bassist Geddy Lee and the lyrics were penned by drummer Neil Peart. Peart wrote this song about his first trip away from home. In 1971, at 18 years old, he left behind his small-town Canadian life and flew to England. This was a major turning point in his life.
    It was released as a single in April 1975, becoming a minor hit in their native Canada (#45). Of note is that it marked the first time a single by the band was released in markets other than the US or Canada, being released in Australia and The Netherlands, but failed to chart in both countries.

    8:08 “that’s normal.” Lol! So funny, because there really are some odd moves in this solo that defy muscle memory. Big fan of this channel. Keep up the good work.

    Always loved this solo! Definitely one of Alex's more "grounded" or "standard" sounding solos, but fits the vibe of the song perfectly!
    Thanks for the lesson!

    I usually just hit the highlights of this solo and freelance the rest. Looks like you've nailed the details. Sounds great.

    Pinch harmonics don't work well for me neither. But, as weird as it sounds, I developed another way. I use the backside of my ring finger, just above the cuticle (maybe closer to the knuckle). Just barely touch the string the same time you pick it.

    You rule. I've said that before and I mean it dammit!! My first riff i ever learned was the main riff. I think seventh grade. So cool!!

    I like how you take the time to transcribe the solo yourself rather than just copy what other RUclips tutors are doing. Many others tutors just copy each other, even to the point where they make the same mistakes (i.e. incorrect transcriptions). You give us YOUR transcription, and because of that, we get a fresh take and new ideas of how to approach the lead. Thanks, Mark!

    Nice! The opening is tough because it's actually two guitars. In part of it, you can hear one of the guitars hitting the open A string, so I like it play it that way - sounds fuller. But I'll ditto LP Player and say I usually hit the solo hilights and improv, too, but you did indeed nail the solo! Nice work.

      Thanks. I'm fairly sure I used a Blackstar HT-5R with just a touch of reverb and gain clocked at about 50%. No pedals.

    i wonder if they do pinch harmonics on purpose....i am relatively new and sometimes i do them unintentionally and it sounds cool....

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 лет назад

      Yes, absolutely the *CAN* be done on purpose. I think many of them on record (especially from the old days) are accidental. I have some trouble with them because I have a strange picking style where I backward slant my pick instead of downward slant it. Pinch harmonics are fairly predictable with a downward slant ... just need to practice!

    Hey Mark, I enjoyed your lesson. What type of digital amp are you using?

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 лет назад

      Thanks! I'm using a Blackstar ID:Core 10 on this. Very inexpensive and it's a great "bedroom amp". Easy to dial in good sounds so you can tweak them quickly.

      Hey Mark,
      Early Rush, Alex played his butt off. I was wondering if you heard a very early Rush cover a song called Bad Boy?
      I love when Alex played this blues rock stuff. Maybe you would consider doing some lick in that song? They are all great!! Below is the link. Bad Boy starts at 18:56. Thanks!!

    Newbie at guitar. This was tremendously helpful in getting me started with my first song. I'll make it through line 4 one of these days. :) Was wondering if you could do a video on Discovery from 2112? It sounds so easy. But, I can't figure it out after the first 15 seconds or so. :|

      Most grateful. I put my guitar down probably 30 years ago, oh .. 35. and got it out again a few years ago, bought some more, an SG and an affinity which I am so pleased with. Now learning all the things I wish I could of played then. I'm going to say it, sorry, but no youtube then, now people like yourself putting up these vids, so professional and unselfish sharing you skills, such good lessons I am learning so much about those tricky little bits that always confounded me.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 года назад

      I'll consider it. I get requests to speed up too. So I try to provide everything I can: full-speed demo, tab, slow-motion version of the whole solo, line by line instruction. I'll consider moving even more slowly in one of those parts. In the meantime, you can slow down the video by using the "playback speed" function underneath the RUclips gear symbol.
