Anthem! Anthem! Anthem! When we bought the second Rush LP in 1975, "Fly By Night," the first song we heard that alerted us to an advancement in the band's sound, was Anthem (which I had heard during their show in St. Louis four months earlier).
This a thousand times. To this day one of my favorite Rush songs. The vocals here are unprecedented. I had never heard anybody sing like this before. This is a banger with soaring vocals, screaming guitars and dynamic drumming. @@timwhitnell7145 Born at the right time. The '60s and '70s were a great era for music, movies and sports, when change was constant but not frightening.
“A little less mature in the best way possible.” Good one, Andy. Sort of describes how I see myself having aged to my ripe ole age of 70. Keep us rockin’!
It's the perfect description - clearly this song isn't making anyone's top 5 all time lists, but if you want more rush than this is where you can get it.
Geddy stated he actually hated Rush (Their album) because he felt it was immature now that he looks back on it and it wasn't as mature as he wanted but I think a lot of that was because of the direction the music companies were pushing at the time for what they wanted and expected the songs to only be #1 hits.
In the same vein, “Working Man” has that youthful exuberance and is just a straight up rock song. Can’t remember if you’ve done that already, but in your words, “It’s a banger.”
Finally, getting back to Rush! I seen them doing this song live back in the late 70's, and they were incredible. "Lakeside Park" is another early on great Rush song.
Anthem off the same album amazing banger, keep up the rush wednesday! Also something for nothing, What your doing, finding my way, and beneath, between and behind is amazing too!
This entire album is criminally underrated and there are so many great songs on it like “Anthem”. I think it was the first Rush song I ever learned how to play on bass.
Fun fact: Rush laid down all the instrumental track and with the crazy bass lines of Geddy Lee. He said he played the best and hardest he could. As he listened to the playback he exclaimed, "Crap! When we play this live, I've got to sing AND play bass!" Yes, guys, "Fly By Night" is the first album in which The Professor appears. It is also his first foray into lyric writing. In your spare time, watch the official music video! Very archaic for early 1975! ✌💙💙💙✌
After rehearsal at the Glens Falls Civic Center, Rush played a Free Memorial Day Concert at Saratoga PAC, along with another great Canadian Band "Pavlov's Dog" who never quite made the Big Time, but continue to play all over the World. 30,000 left Saratoga that day as Life Long Rush Fans.
I'm so so glad you guys have returned to Rush there are many more great bangers to do from them. The Analog Kid, Circumstances, Manhattan Project, The Camera Eye, Distant Early Warning just to name a few!
Andy, Andy, Andy... you haven't "neglected" Rush, you've just come to realize that there's an entire universe of music out there that isn't Rush. And that's a good thing.
