I’ve been really digging into your content deeply trying to figure out what types of educational videos to focus on most so first I’d like to say thank you for all your hard work and sharing your wisdom and experience!
My question is when choosing a color from within the photograph most animals have a soft or shuttle tan or brownish color under their fur in many places. I’m curious about your experience with choosing this as a background color. I know you say to choose a color from within that is influencing the photograph but I wonder if using this color causes the main subject to be more washed out or to loose some of its punch? I noticed you didn’t choose this option for the video so I’m just curious if you would suggest to lean into it or maybe lean more away from it and why or why not.
Thanks again!
@@TinyFitz hi the skin colour is not relevant unless you can see it through the fur openings - ie a polar bear has black skin, but i dont underlayer in black as i never see it under the fur
Thank you Jason, this was really helpful. Considering a background has become much more simple for me.
Thank you Jason, I really appreciate your help this is a wonderful video.
That's a very good way of looking at it. Thank you Jason that's very helpful.
Just the perfect amount of information I need as I am starting a new pet portrait. Thank you so much for showing and explaining how the reference photo is influenced by the background colours. Thank you so much!
Very helpful. Thanks for all your wonderful videos.
Very helpful. Thank you
Another excellent video Jason! Thanks again!!
Great video. Thanks for those tips.
Thanks a lot for your videos!
Thank you Jason for this informative video! I plan on sharing your information and tutorial video website with my senior art class. This will definitely improve my watercolor paintings and theirs immensely! Happy painting! 🎨 Linda from Hobart, IN
This makes so much sense!....Thank you Jason x
With your help, my animal pastelwork has come on by leaps and bounds, but I always agonise over background colour, knowing how important it is to consider reflected light on the subject. This is just what I need - all That remains is for me to master my photo editing programme. I never saw the need before, but this has made me realise how it takes out the chance element which can lead to spoiling the whole painting. Thanks again, Jason - I will use the time I can’t access my studio to persevere with photo editing techniques.
That is so cool. Maybe my next year list.
Thanks Jason! I’ve always wondered how to pick the perfect backgrounds. Tip for others, don’t forget you can reduce the saturation of colors (another Photoshop or digital art tool) to bring them to a more muted hue; its not as complimentary as your technique but does help if you want something specific.
This is really eye opening. I struggle with choosing the pastel mat background. Thank you.
you are an outstanding teacher and artist. now all I have to do is learn how to use my photo shop program
Thank you so much!
Very useful and smart video. Thank you Jason
Great info. Thank you
Thank you so much. I'm new to pastels and this video helps me understand background color. My mistake has been using a white pastel paper for subje cts that should be on a toned paper. lesson learned!
Great tips
Jason I have a question
How do you decide what colors to use underneath layers to build on? I did a free workshop where the artist started with a light brown of sorts and then Payne grey and then built up with white and ivory and light gray on a shadowed part of white fur. But how she got to light brown to that I don’t know how she chose which colors to do. How does this trick help with that?
Need a bit of help regarding making payment on your Patreon site. When I select paypal, it isn’t going thru... any suggestions?
what is ur editing program?
Great video, can this be done with other programs?
Yep almost all. Including free ones. See my other videos for details
Thank you as I have gimp will investigate
@@kathrynbeer8166 :)
what program did you use here Jason
He used Photoshop :)
This video didn’t really explain what color paper to use at all. Keep it simple, and just say, “use a green paper or use a blue paper” etc instead of going into a too in-depth video about the computer program. This video could’ve been 1 min 30 sec. Just keep it simple.
Very helpful. Thanks
