Remarkable performance. The woodwinds section is phenomenal. The first clarinetist solos in the first movement are played with such a honeyed tone. And the first flute and oboe are just as phenomenal. Finally, I, too, am impressed by the rather muscular and unsentimental approach to Brahms. Thank you hr-Sinfonieorchester!
I have attended the concert in which they played a program that was purely dedicated to Brahms. At that time, Paavo Järvi was the chief conductor, and to me it was most astonishing how flexible the hr-Sinfonieorchester is to play this music in so different ways under Järvi on the one hand and Herreweghe on the other, while both are much admired conductors from my perspective. In this recording, the orchester plays in a brilliant, pure and transparent style which was and still is a pleasure to listen to. You may have endless discussions about Herreweghe's way of reading Brahms being too fast or too chamber music style - I just remind all who feel like this that there is a correspondence between Brahms and his friend Joseph Joachim - violinist and conductor - where Brahms complains in a friendly manner that Joachim is performing his symphonies "too fast". This shows us that these discussions are not new, and Brahms certainly considered Joachim one of the best interprets of his music ...
eriol2002 Yes and Brahms was right! The last movement, a rondo, sounds rushed and without any sense of a justification for taking it too fast. All little details, especially in the beautiful Brahms writing for woodwind is lost, hurled to the four corners of the world without ever being able to be savoured by the listener. The brass chorale at the end of the movement sounds 'brushed aside' so when the Schumann quote follows, it does not have the pathos and feeling of nostalgia (remembrance) that Brahms - intentionally - meant it to have as it appears AF the end of the first movement, too. (It is a quote from the first movement of Schumann's Third Symphony, 'The Rhenish'). If Herrewege had tried this with a less experienced orchestra, say an amateur orchestra, it would have fallen apart at the seams. It is only the superb musicality of the orchestra and their technical skill that stops it from falling apart. When a conductor relies on an orchestra like that, it doesn't say much for his (or her) ability or craftsman(woman)ship.
Mein absolutes Lieblingsorchester! Einfach wunderbar, da kann man auch mal zwischendurch applaudieren (auch wenn ich persönlich kein Fan davon bin, eine Symphonie zu unterbrechen) ich bin begeistert! Danke!

In fact I sometimes feel guilty: I know the work (here the symphony) ought to be heard, felt and admired in its whole. And I learned early not to clap in between movements, yet I can listen to this movement all by its own.
Great Idea that of playing the second theme of the third movement slightly up tempo just as you would with the trio section of a scherzo, it worked to perfection in my opinion, great performance, bravo!!!
Got the tempo right which is more than most conductore do. Seems to be lacking in "Woomph" but that is as much to do with how it was recorded as anything. :-) Well done!
Have never heard a recording where the orchestra plays the repeat of the exposition of the 1st movement- exciting! I noticed from this recording how much sophisticated syncopation upon syncopation makes up the 1st movement. Brahms puts in a secret message via the melody: low F-A-high F, meaning “frei aber froh,” “free (from being in a relationship) but happy.” This in contrast with “frei aber einsam” (free but lonely).
The camera people desperately need guidance to show instruments with solo/leading sections of the music. Very frustrating to watch wind section when violas have solo. Help

@@julia-hj8rb I own his 1989 recording of the Christmas Oratorio and it's extraordinary but maybe it doesn't count as a dishevelled "conductor's piece". I agree that this orchestra plays very well.
Orchestra, as usual, excellent. Unfortunately, third movement much too fast, the whole inner pain of that miraculous movement got lost. Fourth movement way too fast as well. As in another comment already stated, only thanks to the fantastic musicians it didn't fell apart. Just listen to Christoph Eschenbach and Houston Symphony Orchestra. Wonderful.
The tempo of the fourth movement is too fast.Of course, for me.For this symphony, Clara Schuman suggests a clear statement in a letter to and from him.Her remark was exactly the same as my own thought.Surprisingly.The final movement finishes as if it disappears. Do not forget it.
This is certainly the most exciting Brahms Third I've heard, but at the sacrifice of its grandeur, charm, and final peace in its closing pages. What I heard here seemed over-dramatized and graceless, with unusual ideas of accents, balances, and note values by conductor Herreweghe, compromising the symphony's natural flow and import and the great performance of the orchestra. My attention was diverted from the music and onto the conductor's strange view of it. My subjectivity is enhanced by my lack of knowledge perhaps, and this is doubtless a valid conception of the symphony; it's just not mine. I hope to hear Maestro Orozco-Estrada's interpretation of it in the future.

Who wouldn’t be. Surprised how this older. Conductor seems to be pushing the tempo
Sounds so natural and without disturbing heaviness...never heard this symphony this way
Great comment! That's because the conductor uses the crescendos marked in the score to perfection. Avoiding such heaviness.
How lovely to slip on my Brahms coat again: warm, comforting, loving - close to tears in the first movement.
