Huge thanks! I was just about to be charged $208 to have a brake light assembly installed and decided to do some research. 10 minutes later my light is working. Made my day!
Rock on! I always attempt to repair my stuff before I have someone else do it. Its already buggered up, might as well give it a go! Glad it helped you out! If you wana support with your awesome savings when you use Amazon click this link: amzn.to/29Tvk1a
And it's ALWAYS the driver side!
Thanks, much appreciate the quick fix idea it worked like a charm. You saved me time and money.
Mine was the passenger side and it was all bulbs didnt light I replaced the entire assembly so it is new and not rusted mine is a 2004
Thank You sooooo much. I changed my bulb before the winter thinking everything was ok. Only for my fiance to tell me months later "you know you have no brake lights?" I asked around and got 10,000 different reasons. I thought maybe I was given the wrong bulb until I looked it up and saw that that wasn't the case then I saw your video this morning and I gave it a last ditch try and it worked. Thank you! I didn't want to take to a shop and they charge me millions for something so simple. Now I know for next time. Thanks again!👏👏👏
LadyMirage707 Hahaha, well that's so awesome that you got it to work again! Glad I could help. I hate the taking cars into the shop also =)
Wish I would have found you before I replaced my other tail lights 😂 happened again after a month of having the new ones so I tried your method and sure enough they’re back. God bless brother
This is the solution... I have had endless problems with the brake lights and it appears to be those flat contacts that were the problem. Kind of tricky to get a knife blade under them but pry them up a little and bingo.
Thanks for the video!
I've had my 2002 for at least 10 years. NEVER could figure out that stupid tail light.
FINALLY! . . . thanks to YOU!
I sure appreciate you posting this.
+william the lesser Haha, glad I could help! I have no idea whats up with these light fixture housings.... I eventually had to replace this part also amzn.to/1XcXHaL Cheers!
+dR00Ck I actually cracked mine a bit yesterday, but it's holding good enough to keep the contacts touching. So I'm glad you sent the link for the replacement circuit board. (Since I drive a vehicle until it just won't drive any more, I'm sure I'll be needing it, eventually!)
So tired of all the electrical issues ... this worked! THANKS BROTHER!!!
+Carl Bennett Good deal! I just had to replace one of my light sockets that was shorting out on me. If this quick fix stops working you might have to try that. amzn.to/1OoPSdB
We appreciate your knowledge you save us time and money. My grandson is getting ready to go back to college with brake lights operational on both sides. Now we want have to worry about him not having brake lights. Thank you!!
Damn Dealership.
Thanks so much for the video! Fixed my Jeep! Also a little trick, sometimes you have to turn the bulb like halfway in order to make contact. At least with mine it wouldn't make contact sometimes when turned in all the way.
You're awesome, boss. Changed bulbs, didn't fix. put the socket from the other side and it worked for a few days, stopped working again. Checked the connectors like you mentioned (inside, not on the replaceable socket). One had kind of gotten stuck in the plastic bit in there, popped it up with a flathead and bam. Works. Saved me a possible ticket and hassle of figuring out what else it could have been. THANKS!
Nice! happy to help people after I struggled with this one for over a year lol
This worked on my daughters grand Cherokee. It’s an ‘05 5.7. Saved me time/money, thanks a lot
You just saved me so much money from Tickets to Shop fees! Obviously so easy a girl can do it lol Thank you so much!!!
Omg this worked on my 04 Loredo. Changed bulbs sockets fuses... And nothing worked. Glad I stumbled onto your vid big thanks
2004 jeep grand cherokee overland...yup! Just fixed it. Thank you, Lord, for this video and the person who made it.
+Melvin Cadlaon Haha nice! I am jealous of the overland model =)
My Overland is starting to do the same thing so I'm excited to try this
Hey Guy, Brake light. Bulb looked OK. Your fix worked like a charm. Thanks from all of us out hear trying to avoid the Dealers!!!!!!!
+trianj12 Nice. I hate the stealerships also!
I've got a 99 Mercedes e300td, I've replaced the brake switch, all of the fuses in my panel, both brake light assemblies and nothing worked, was planning on downloading a wiring diagram and start looking for a bad wire this weekend. Then I came across this... And it worked... Thanks for making this video, and for making me look like an idiot.
+Hunter Hopkins Awesome man! Glad it worked even on a different car manufacture! Cheers
Thanks for this... been driving me insane. I got them working 3 times this month only to hear 3 times 'Hey man, you know your tail lights are out?'
Man your a god send. I was worried that it was going to be a very hard to find short. Mine was the same side. When I first adjusted the tabs my brake lights were locked on. Then I twisted the bulb a few times and found the sweet spot. Thanks!
Thanks for the tip! I've spent more time than I care to say trying to figure this out and your tip worked like a charm.
Same here. For a year I’ve been figuring it out hahah
Thank you so much. I'm so broke and I need to get my daughter for Thanksgiving. Thanks to you I fixed it myself and now she doesn't have to stay at Hogwart's... I mean Duquesne for the holiday.
Awesome! Glad I could help. Happy holidays to you and your family!
It worked cherry thank u . it worked thank God for people like u that post these nice tricks of the trade.
Thanks! 3 minute fix saved me a trip to the shop.
Oh, I also had a little corrosion build up on the terminal, I pried them up (as you suggested) and scraped that off with a screw driver.
Amazing… I was about to buy a whole new brake housing unit. Went back out to the Jeep and bent the tabs up like you indicated… and what do you know… fixed. You rock!
Excellent! =D
This WORKED!! Thank you so much! All along, I thought it was the lightbulb which needed replacing. It looked fine. I did what you described in your video and the brake light illuminates now. Thanks again!
Awesome! Glad I could help save some $ and headache =)
Worked perfectly, thanks much for the help! You saved me a trip to the shop!
Oh I hope this works for me! It's late at night and I'm about to go to sleep but now I want to go see if this works! If it does thank you in advance!!! You're awesome!
You just saved me so much money. I just watched this and did what you said. Bless you son!
Awesome, glad it could help. Be sure to click on the amazon links with all that money you saved! =P
Thanks for the quick fix, although my WJ is VERY fickle. It took a few tries but I finally got the tabs correctly connected so that the brake lights worked and they also weren't illuminated all the time when the headlights were on.
Thank you so much i almost went and paid a ton of money for someone to fix this for me 🙌🏾
I prefer to let a trained professional do things like this, I'm prone to breaking tiny bits like this.
Tried replacing bulb & socket. No luck. Ready to tear into wiring, but this simple fix worked for me. Thx!
+Greg Schmidt Awesome!
thank you for this very helpful video - I learned alot. I just wanted to add I found a cheap new sprocket at autozone for under $10.00 - which came with A LIFETIME WARRENTY so if it ever goes out again I wont have as much drama the next time. I did raise the metal conduits on the inside & I am sure that also needed to be done. so thank you for all the information on what sounds to be a common problem!
Nice, good to know they might have them at a local auto shop! Cheers
It worked, you just saved me $65 my friend. THANKS!!!
+crodz530 Awesome!
oh and also pay attention to how you put the sprocket back in with regard to one conduit set and the 2 conduit set -- I put in backward and it caused my fuse to blow so I was done for the night til I got to the auto store in the morning -- AND if you did this too & need a new fuse its fuse 23 - a 15 number fuse. I have a 2004 jeep gc. I wanted to add this cause it took me alot of time just to get that info & might as well save someone else sometime.
thank you!
Great fix. Sometimes you also need to back off the lamp socket a bit for the contacts to make a secure connection. Best done when brake is applied by an assistant. Be sure to mark or note the index on the lamp socket itself. You CAN put them in backwards and they will NOT come off without breaking housing. Poor design. The lamp holders are also available and if visibly burnt should be or needs to be changed.. Hope this helps
Just saved me from ripping apart stuff to find wires! Thanks man
***** Awesome!
Thanks for posting! Saved me the tail light assembly cost!
+John Fisher Good deal, glad it could help!
Thank you... it was the same thing i was thinking, but your video made me not give up on fixing it lol 😂
Thanks for the video! Helped me a TON! When headlights on, i would press the peddle and both running/headlight and brake-light would go out! Turns out, this cured my problem as well! THANK YOU!
ffiddy I’m having the same issue changed bulbs was getting worried it would get pricey or something else was wrong literally going to try this right now
Man thanks I thought this was a mayor problem, oh shit easy to fix, the engine are good but lots of electrical problems with this Cherokees.
Great Tutorial for a common problem and a big cash saver!
Thank you, thank you! I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the tail light. This fixed it. Thanks!!!
Thanks so much bro, I tried everything to fix this problem. I did what you said, boom worked. You are the man. Thank you again
Thank you so much. This was the exact problem with my grand Cherokee. Easy fix
Thanks for the info - just fixed my brake light - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
I really appreciate this video! Ive taken my jeep to 3 different mechanic shops and spent close to 1000.00 trying to fix that (plus tickets for it being out) damn brake light that continuously goes out! thank you so much...now i can fix it my damn self!
+AmberLynn Williams Oh wow that really sucks! Glad you got it fixed! =D
This problem has been driving me crazy; thanks man!
+gr_clarkson Sweet!
Tha is for posting you saved me from driving my wife to work, now I get to sleep in another hour and a half
😂😂
Two quick notes: (a) Make sure you are putting the lamp holders back into the correct hole, since they don't all have the same number of electrical contacts; (b) after prying the contacts back into place, rub gently with pencil eraser to remove built-up oxidation, for best conductivity (old model railroader's trick!).
Also, the black flange/seal/whatever seen at far left around 0:55 tends to break off the light assembly, but can usually be finessed back into place when rescrewing to vehicle.
Had to do this "repair" so many times on my '99 Grand Cherokee, it's embarrassing!
VideoNOLA Good points thanks for the input!
how do the hell do I alight the "lamp holders?" Im stuck and it wont work
the most helpful thing i ever found to fix my jeep thanks!
Glad I could help with your slave I
Please never remove this video. I just saved myself god knows how many hours looking for a short in a wire somewhere. Thank you kindly sir.
Thank you! Same thing (brake lights) happens frequently in my Jeep Wrangler, too. Thanks for your help.
MY Hero!! This solution worked perfectly!!
I did this but it only fixes for when the lights are turned off. But when u press the break it still goes out. But when my lights are off it works good.
Thanks. I was mad with that issue. Fixed in 3 minuts!
You saved me money I don't have. Cheers!
Thank you so much! I thought I was going to be in for costly repairs, this worked perfectly.
+Hannah M Awesome!
This actually worked for me!!! Thank you so much
thank you. fixed my brake light issue in 5mins.
Sweet
Thanks so much for that information. My husband said you described it to the T.
Is happen more then twice on my jeep. Wonder if I was able to fixed. Call mechanic Before charge me $80.00 every time and the bulb light .So today I say no more I know I cando it bymyself.I just need to know how, I read the manual But I am a visual learner..Thank so much ..Thankkkkkkss so muchhhh,I appreciate your knowledge you save me time and money, your video made me not give up on,thanks for the tutorial very simple very easy. This problem has been driving me crazy,.
Thanks so much! I have a 2004 Jeep and this has really helped!
The same bulb (top)services the Brake and tail light. When stepping on the brake, the right and left light up. When I turn on the lights the drivers side tail light does not work, but it lights up when stepping on the brake, although they are both the same bulb. Turn signals are fine. ???
OMG I seriously can't thank you enough!!!
Five Stars Bro!! It worked!!
Why are Jeep Cherokees such a-holes? I’m about over mine, had a headlight go out last night, and got pulled over for a brake light out earlier today!
thanks for the tutorial very simple very easy even my wife could do it and she did thanks again
+Ruben Stepanian Awesome!
hello , or did you buy the bag that you installed in the trunk please ?
I've been having this problem for a few years now. It seems like in cold/wet weather it malfunctions more. But not just the brake light. It includes the turn signal as well. My mechanic replaced the turn signal switch. Told me it was the tail light. But I just replaced it with a salvage tail light. Both lights, the replacement and the previous light, had the same problem. Not to mention the previous light was replaced several years prior for same problem. What would be the next thing you would try?
Question I brought A used transmission for mines and had the person I brought it from put it in he’s a handy mechanic but reliable and now it’s making an awful rattling noise under neath like something lose could it be the trans or something else
please make a video with a 2007 grand chereokee third brake light ? like the top one..
Thanks so much!!!! Replaced the light bulb and of course it wasn't working...found your video, and Boom! fixed.
Nice
works on a 05 just alittle different thanks for the help
The taillights get too hot and warp the plastic in the socket. Led bulbs for the win. They don't get as hot as regular bulbs. I had the same problem I'm my 94 caprice
Huge thanks to you!! This solved my problem!
One of my sweet little old lady neighbors tells me my taillight is out on this side, with a wave of her hand.
Right, left, driver, passenger, port, starboard, I mean which side is "this" side?
From her description I'm thinking it's the brake light I just replaced, but when I went out after dark anything that could get me pulled over was working, so I have no idea what she was talking about.
Definitely was the problem... 160bucks later 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ Thanks for the video💯💯🎯
Here's a new wrinkle. The bulbs in the top position (like your video light) up when the headlights and running lights are on. The bulbs in the second position the taillights work for left and right turn signals, but when I push the brake pedal, the brake lights do not work for either taillight. I've taken out all three bulbs in each taillight assembly and they appear to be ok-not burned out. Is there a short in the brake light system or something to do with the brake pedal that is causing the problem?
I don't know. That sounds like a short, but might be a bigger problem and hopefully you have gotten it taken care of by now
I had a similar problem with 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 Ltd Edition, Cleaned all connections and coated with a thin coat of dielectric grease after blowing out all connections with compressed air to remove moisture. Pried up the ground on the light fixture. Coated seals with the dielectric grease and everything is working perfectly.

Isn’t there a fuse for the brake switch? Thought I saw one listed in the owners manual under interior fuses? Might be worth a look if it isn’t fixed already 🙂
Going to try this...I just realized yesterday my brake lights aren't working. I have turn signals and the running lights work when I have my headlights on. I looked at the fuses and bulbs and they are fine. Fingers Crossed. :-)
Leslie Ann Good luck, let me know!
Thanks mine would go out/off if i pushed the brake pedal down when my headlights were on, this was the same fix. Thanks.
Thanks for the video! Worked like a charm!
Excellent!
My issue is BOTH went out at the same time. Replaced bulbs and even brake switch, still not working. Both went out at the same time.
Hi Cheri, did you ever get this fixed? Have same exact problem.. very eager to find a solution. Thanks.
@@jamesrowland520 I know this is late, but I had this problem and it ended up being that my fuse box was not reading voltage for the brake lights. As well as some other fuses I suppose. Replaced the fuse box and fixed my problem. 👍
Thanks! I'm not Michael, I'm his mom and I'm going to check mine right now! I'll comment again once I'm done!!
Are you done?
Now I did that same thing after buying new bulbs and a new socket...now I have a problem where I press the brake pedal and now no running light or brake lights...it shines until you press the brake pedal...any suggestions...
Do the bottom lights do anything?
Hey man thanks so much this actually worked
My dad has a 2000 Jeep with the same problem. Had to switch out the entire light case because the board was bad.
Chris Stein HHHmmm I haven't had an issue with the light box, but I am making a run to the junk yard for extra parts and might pick one up!
Thanks man ..... worked like a charm ...!
My taillights have not worked for over a year i need to get on this
Hey! Do you know if this fix will cross over to a Jeep Cherokee? (XJ)
My bulbs are new and the fuse is good, but both lights refuse to come on when I step on my brakes.
Not sure, but its worth a try. You might need a new housing or tail light circuit board.
I have a 1995 Grand Cherokee and every time I turn the lights on I get a loud beeping and a message on the dash display says, "Rear Lamp Failure", but all the rear lights are working fine. I changed the lamp control module behind the spare tire with a known working one and that didn't help.
i have the same issue on the passenger side. bulbs are good. and i replaced the bulb sockets. i also heated the gasket and replaced the mother board thing with the 3 holes. no luck..... what else could it be? harness?
Damn! I would take a pen light tester (similar to this one amzn.to/2iYn2J9) and test the wire harness. have someone else step on the breaks and use the light to see if it is getting juice.
for my wj, the brake lights work when the headlights are off, but when the headlights are on, pressing the brake causes my right tail light to go out entirely. do you think this will solve that problem, or something else entirely?
Maybe, some of the jeeps have funky wiring and it could be a short or something like that. Have you tried changing bulbs or doing this?
Yes this happen on my brothers jeep. It is a contact issue 95 out of 100 times.
I have a 2000 grand Cherokee and tail lights only work for reverse and blinker i replaced them and still same problem I took off trim inside to see wires and everything seems to be together any ideas ??
I would replace the whole light board. amzn.to/1P4y59a
thanks for the video and the links!!
wow....he makes it look so easy...
+L. Jackson =D
Thanks for posting this video! This exact problem has cost me so many light sockets that I purchased that I have lost count! it's one of the most annoying problems with these Jeeps. Credit has to go to the idiot Designer and engineering team who came up with this rotten design in the 1st place where there is no allocation for heat which causes the contacts on the Tail Light Circuit board (base) soften!! The incredibly then and soft material of the circuit board itself is problem which pushed the contacts embedded in it, away from the contacts on the Light socket.
In 2016 I also Tail Lamp Circuit Board which you can find on Amazon! Driver side is now started failing again! It's a constant reminder why that I am not driving a Toyota. And if all this was not annoying enough, there is a FUSE that controls the Break Lights that could cause ALL of them to fail.
...but, of course. So simple, so effective. Thanks.
i replaced the actually bulb light socket, and for some reason my brake lights wont work. when i turn my headlights on all the lights in the rear light up as if the brake was applied. could this be a ground contact issue?
or a shortage somewhere
Diffidently sounds like a short. Have you unplugged both tail lights and tried one at a time? See if you can identify if either side is causing the short.
im gonna do that tommorrow, but if thats the case would i need to buy a new set of brake lights?
Could be the light board on one side or the another shorting. I replaced the Tail Lamp Circuit Board amzn.to/2dqen13 and the Tail Lamp Socket amzn.to/2degT72 on one side of mine. But I wasn't having the issues you described here, just general problems on one side. You can make sure you are running the correct fuses for the lights under the dash. You can always take it to a mechanic and have then trace the wires, but that sounds expensive.....
i do have extra fuses in my jeep, if anything ill pull the fuse box and replace the ones that are looking burnt if any. and ill check the tail lights/connections. thanks alot. really appreciate the help/advice.
Thanks for the help buddy!
sweet!
Thanks, big help! Take care.
Sigh well I tried it and the three metal pieces were down and I got them up some. But it still don't work. ugh. Thanks though that was cool to know.
