Hello to all . I traveled from holland to London and I have followed one of Paul his workshops in London this year . I can recommend this to anyone who has passion for street monochrome. It’s joyful and educational.. with a combination to spent some days in London it was the best I ever done ..
I totally get your, "Oh, but look at the competition" jitters but that's exactly why yours stands out. Unplanned, crazy light but the result ? Wow. That'll be a top 10 image for years to come and not just for you. Outstanding work.
After the release of the Leica Q3, I was able to pick up a fantastic used Leica Q2M and it has given me my passion at a budget price. Brings me back to shooting film. Love how it really makes you slow down, think, and compose a better image. Shooting B&W only makes you a better photographer in my mind. You start seeing things that you would have missed before.
Voted for you Paul, good luck. What an interesting subject and backstory. I have recently dusted down my 14 year old Pentax K5, and I am enjoying my photography again.
Watched the podcast, thanks so much. I absolutely agree with the monochrome comments made. My Q1 is set to a high contrast Monochrome profile including the EVF and saved as JPEG so there’s never any colour saved…✌️
I understand where you are coming from, I have always been a monochrome photographer, and still shoot a lot of film. Thankfully, I am now retired since July 1st, after having a heart attack in February. I now have time to do what I have always wanted to with my photography. It was hard grinding it out, but life is pretty sweet now. Thanks for the video, and I’ll check out the Podcast, and JA’s channel. I have never heard of him, and street isn’t really my thing, but I can learn something from everybody!!
I voted. I remember seeing this image from a previous video and it captured my attention then. Amazing story about Sophia. I wish you both good luck on her venture and your portrait submission. I'm subscribed to both yours and Jeff's channel, going to check out your Monochrome Madness. :)
When I became a bloody young 'photographer', there was nothing but monochrome, and the prints were not anywhere near 'black&white' but 'chamois', more or less brownish-grey. Not until ten years later, about 1965, I enjoyed a darkroom equipment of my own and was able to produce real black&white prints. Finally, the job at an advertising agency called for colour, namely colour slides, no colour prints from a photographic negative. But my private photography remained mostly black&white at a ratio of 10/1 concerning analogue film. Now I'm contemplating the Pentax K-3 III Monochrome (I don't like mirrorless).
Great message here, Paul, thank you. I looked in the mirror sometime back and pondered “ what happened to that mere slip of a lad with the Minolta SRT-101 round his neck?” It’s a good conversation to have!
Yep got me to vote too Paul. Black and white always seems to be an after thought for me. But I'm still trying to understand light so colour helps to make my pictures more interesting. Still happy I stumbled across your channel. I enjoyed ya man Alice's video on shooting from the hip
Great video! And you can use everything you said not only on photography but on art. There are types and styles of doing your art that you should understand and learn but to really make art you should create something own. And it really shouldnt matter if you have "success" with it. Success and trends have a very bad impact on artist make them just random people that paint or photograph in a certain well known style.
Amen to all that! Those who don’t get it don’t need to get it and it’s not our responsibility to explain or justify ourselves. Life IS short so let’s just get on with it our way 😎⚫️⚪️🔥
Voted. I shoot DNG and monochrome jpegs with my M10R and Q3. The jpeg gives me my B&W ‘vision’ but sometimes converting the colour DNG allows me to extract more from the colour channels which are fixed in the jpeg. Just my way of working. And I keep my optionality.
I started my photography journey with landscapes, the more I did the less I enjoyed it. The turning point was buying a 50mm 1.8 lens and seeing Walk Like Alice on RUclips. After surviving the initial feeling of pointing your camera at strangers I now only shoot on the street including portraits and thoroughly enjoy it. Of course it goes without saying all in black and white. I find colour confusing.
Paul, i just finished your Lessons on B and W photography. Was Supprised you did NOT cover the use of color filters, for B and W photography. Nor did your cover your PRINT process of b and W prints. Those ,gorgeous photos, cannot be straight from camera,or without use of a color filter. Please do a RUclips on this topic. I am a retired Pro film B and W photographer. Travel and Advertizing. Since 1974. Currently use Leica M10M.
So I never use colour filters. My print process is actually already on a RUclips video I already released. As is a short video on my editing process. I will add those as resources to the course.
DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOB !!!! You must have some money to live on as You work 24 hrs a day to start a business !!!!!!! Borrow money,, BAD IDEA !!!!!!!! Not everybody is made to work in their own business.... Also so many people think that they are a good, or great photog,, because people tell them they are.... HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM :( :( :(
I agree that for most just quitting their job would be a mistake. However what I’m saying is start making a plan and start building a business around what you love if you hate your job. Some people love their job and can find time to do photography too.
Thanks very much!! Yeah it’s really exactly what I said. Jeff doesn’t care who gets or doesn’t get his photography. He does however stick to his guns and photographs the way he wants to. I get and like his work. Some people don’t get mine!
The joy of photography is that everyone is different and we all like different things. The fact that you are commenting on my work is a win for me. It means you looked at it. Which is great. You don't have to like it but thanks for taking the time to look at it. 🙏
@@WalkLikeAlice Cheers mate, next time your pictures appear on someone’s RUclips I actually like and watch I make sure I will skip that bit. All the best and thanks for taking the time to replying x

I recently bought a Q2 M and I love it.
It certainly changes the way you shoot! Thanks so much for watching the video
Two worlds collide. Two of my favorite photographers/youtubers in the same video! Both of your channels always motivate me to go out and shoot.
Amazing!!! Thanks so much for watching!!!
Vote is in. Great portrait and congratulations no matter the outcome!
Thanks so much for your support.
Thank you for your humanities based perspective.
Thanks so much

I still haven’t tried one of those cameras but it certainly would focus you on monochrome even more
Voted. Love the street portrait. Best of luck.
Thanks so much!!!
Had been following Jeff for quite some time before finding your channel. Immediately saw similarity in your work. Really, really enjoyed the podcast.
Fantastic!!! Glad to like his work!! Glad you enjoyed the podcast too
Just voted for your portrait, I'm sure it will win👍
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!
Shooting monochrome with my actual 50 pounds low budget Canon 40d with nifty fifty is some sort of an happy maker which i always carry around...
Fantastic!!! I still use a 5D Mkii sometimes
Great message here, Paul, thank you. I looked in the mirror sometime back and pondered “ what happened to that mere slip of a lad with the Minolta SRT-101 round his neck?” It’s a good conversation to have!
Yeah hey it took me many years to really do what I loved!

@@paulreidphotography Thank you very much.
The pictures by Jeff Ascough are more natural and less directed and less black magic, aren't they?
Yeah. I also think that in 20 years time his street photography shows a true picture of this time.
Why not just set your camera to B/W picture style JPG and save 8 grand?
That’s my advice if you have a brain that doesn’t start questioning yourself after in post

Did you have to get the girls permission?
Yeah I did!! I told her I was entering it and she wrote me a bunch of stuff about herself.
Not a fan of that FL

Vote is in good luck Paul great portrait! Sorry but JA talks a good photo but his pictures……..underwhelming.
