Climbing the Peak Districts latest must do HVS, Zapple Wall at Yarncliffe

Today we went to Yarncliffe to climb on the recently cleaned Zapple Wall. What was previously unclimbable has now been unearthed again so we seized the opportunity to get on it.

First video I have seen of this climb, and a nice one as well. I led this over 35 years ago, the right hand 5b crack. It was a bit sandy and dusty, but a really great route. It felt well out there on lead especially at the rather dirty top. Not able to do this sort of stuff at my age and we didn’t have video in those days, so this is great to see. I subscribed as well.

Nice one! Climbed Zapple about 10 years ago. Surprised it needed cleaning as yarncliffe seemed so accessible - we picked it for being roadside and having a good collection of easy trad routes to practice on

Although accessible it’s often very dirty and sandy just because of the sand and mud at the top which runs down the slabs, and zapple had trees growing out of it until the other week!

Major cleanup job at Yarncliffe was done earlier this year by a work party from the Peak Climbing Club, who are a great bunch of very sociable climbers of all abilities & ages. Yes Mr G Hammond is a (keen) member.
