Just to clarify: Knowles claimed (in his updated work) that the principles of andragogy are better applied to self-directed people rather than to adults per se. Children or adults who are relatively independent would be best served by an andragogical approach. Children or adults who are relatively dependent may be better served by a pedagogical approach.
Wow so applicable SEE learning 1. Need to Know 1:23 2. Self Concept 1:57 3. Experience 2:35 4. Readiness to Learn 3:23 wow so interestingly true awesome
I have utilized adult learning theory in my teaching face to face as well as in online teaching. What I enjoyed about this video was a walk through the history of thought related to androgogy as well some critiques of the theory. Very specific attributes detailed a few concepts I have not previously associated with androgogy.
I enjoyed the video. It is really an extension of the theories that I was introduced to in my last class (Adult Theory). It is really an introduction and a framework for teaching and creates an atmosphere for good teaching practice. I recognized many of the six assumptions in myself and how they affect me as an adult learner.
Thank you for creating this introductory video... I agree with the narrator's comment that this appears to be a framework for teaching and that factors cane applied to adults and children. I appreciate this resources as a good starting point for learning more.
Six Assumptions of Adult Learners 1. The Need to know 2. Self Concept 3. Experience 4. Readiness to learn 5. Orientation to learning 6. Motivation to learn
Very interesting information while I study adult learning and instruction. I just got 4 hours of sleep and woke up because I have to study and turn in assignments that are late. I'm watching this video. Trying not to fall asleep because I am sleepy.
@Nina2663 Thanks for the feedback and for pointing out the typo in the video - we had missed that but will get it fixed as soon as possible. All the best.
As an educator and scientist, I can appreciate the growth from the research and knowledge from educators that was put into learning the true meaning of "Andragogy." The process of learning andragogy leads from one generation to generations of study. Amazing Kim Fisher
@GoodbuJ Thanks for letting us know this is available - don't think it was when we uploaded the video. Have now changed to a CC licence. Let us know how you use it - it would be useful for our project.

As a therapist who utilizes Reality Therapy, these 6 assumptions of adult learning could "tie in" to Glasser's 5 basic needs theory...do adults choose to learn for power, independence, survival, belonging, or fun?
Glasser's Choice Theory is used heavily in the educational field. I would say that while both children and adults are motivated by these five goals, I would hypothesize that children tend to be more motivated by fun, adolescents by belonging, young adults more by independence, middle-aged adults more by power, and finally, a return to fun and belonging in retirement. This is just my intuition, combined with Erikson's developmental stages.
Really interesting. However, don't these principles now apply to young people too as the difficulties of engaging young people with current pedagogies becomes more apparent? Just sat in on a global online debate where a New York student called on educators to ditch teacher-focused curriculum and added: "I think we need to switch from pedagogy to to andragogy."
This is a great video but I would like to know what the PC3 team is. I am sharing this video with my class on Instructional Design and Professional Development and would like to provide them with references for the PC3 team.
Great, but I wished the titles of each concept where written on a slide. As a primarily visual learner, I missed one of them while writing notes. (Or have a list at the end of the presentation).

ANDRagogy has nothing to do with adult learning! ANDR (ἀνδρ) is the root of anér (ἀνήρ) which means "man" (male human being). So the word means "men's learning" as opposed to women's learning. Ancient Greek does not have a term for what we call an adult, but andragogy just makes no sense. Do not mess with what you do not know!!

Wow! Thanks for the explanation! I didn't know both approaches could be taught to both populations. That is so awesome!

I'm learning how I learn as an adult there are still some areas I need help and this is fascinating stuff.

when it comes to minute 4:53 gets stopped....!!! frustrating as it was being good so far
Is this related to the measured decline in "fluid intelligence" due to aging?
Is that Feng Chia Night Market in Taiwan?
Nice.
andragogy involves a person who dresses like someone of the opposite sex, hello
adiksadiatabs I think you are thinking of androgyny!
you're wrong. consider the entomology of the word: drag.
LOL! Just consult a dictionary!
For the meaning of entomology as well as andragogy! (Assuming you meant to check the etymology...)
Janet, I believe it's a futile conversation. :-)

yOU"RE IN NEED OF ANDRAGOGY
The etymology of a word does not determine its current use. "Andragogy" is used to refer to adult learning.
