I replaced my bearings on the same bike a few weeks ago and really enjoyed this video because I knew what was coming in so many ways. Yes, it is relatively easy to do, totally agree but if you compare it to something like bearing replacement on a Pivot Switchblade it is quite more challenging because the two bearings on the curved part of the link are difficult to get equal pressure on, even with the correct tools. I came so close to painting myself into the same corner on the insertion as well and likely would have cut the bolt out of frustration so glad you figured that out! Great video and I personally appreciate watching a professional mechanic occasionally stumble through and solve stuff because I learn way more that way.
The Scott Spark has had the "Nude" shock that has a pedal/traction (middle mode) for ages (twenty years). In this mode one chamber is closed off and so reduces the shock’s air volume. This reduces the effective travel (to 80mm) and results in a more progressive air spring curve, sits you higher in the shock’s travel and ground to pedal clearance is increased.
Also- how you route the brake hose. You fully pull everything out the hole where you used the pliers, so you have like 2 feet of brake house out of the frame. And then you push it through the hole that goes up the downtube instead. I used to do the pliers method as well, but just pulling it through that hole, and then you can fairly easily push it up through the downtube again. The last 4 inches or so can be trick since it wants to twist or loop, but a lot easier than using pliers.
Great video. The final weight was a bit more than I expected to see and more than Specialized lists for a complete S-Works. Why do you ride a Medium at your height? Wouldn't going to a Large solve your seat angle issues? I'm a little bit shorter and ride a Large but end up with my seat pushed forward a little bit. I swapped my flip chip to the low position one day when I was bored then forgot that I had done it. That weekend I was pre-riding a NICA course with my kids and couldn't figure out why my bike felt terrible. Finally remembered the flip chip and immediately put it back in the high position and it was so much better.
Couldn't agree more with the fact that this bike is dialed like no other full suspension MTB! Building it is a breeze and over the past few months mine didn't make any problems at all. BTW: If you don't like running the rear brake cable through the tubed front triangle routing why not just routing it through the frame/storage area instead😆? I really like how they solved the tubing since there are no loose cables in the frame storage area where I constantly stuff in all sorts of equipment.
Thats exactly why I run it. I feel weird not using it and its nice when its all installed. I just think the execution of it could be improved. Should of mentioned that in the video. Enve actually has this sorted the best. They glue a piece of velcro into the downtube to hold the cable in place haha.
not sure if it would actually help with your position challenges but fairbicycle (and maybe others) have some pretty dramatic offset clamps for the axs droppers to shift saddle far forward or back (27mm)
That would 1000% help. I’ve been looking into them. It’s functional but not optimal if that makes sense. I still think it’s a criticism but not a big one if that makes sense.
Hey just got the S-Works Epic 8 and was wondering what lower Ceramicspeed SLT Bearings you got for the bike. I can either find one with a different angle (45° x 45° instead of 36° x 45°) or different OD (51,8 instead of 52 and 1mm higher).
Hi guys Happy Christmas and best holiday wishes from Denmark. Would you ever consider trying the Orbea Oiz and maybe even comparing it to the Epic and BC40? Would also be amazing if you could elaborate on your answer a bit.
Great video as I await part 3 for the race laps. I know you have talked about specialized being the revolutionary bikes that all have followed especially when you did the comparison of your green BC40 and the Evo. However, I will point out that Scott bikes were the first to put 120/120 on XC bikes and I think they do not get enough credit. My current Spark is an amazing bike and the hidden shock in the frame is surprisingly easy to work on. Just saying as specialized was not the first and from pov almost 3rd in attempting the 120/120 xc bike. Scott and Intense Sniper had it way before specialized. I can't wait for my BC40. Any thoughts on or have you ever ridden a Scott Spark? Cheers Scott
Bmc used to sell a bike called the agonist. I had one it was super cool. Specialized used to sell the sworks camber with the 120 race suspension. I don’t think 120 suspension is revolutionary. I think flight attendant is. I would be stoked to try a spark if they sent me one.
As an Epic 7 owner I already replaced the Brain fork with the latest Sid ultimate and remote. Looking to do the same with the Brain shock but need to change the Yoke with a custom one from Bikeyoke. Have you done that? Do think it’s relevant? Thanks for your videos btw. There is a lot of very helpful infos!
What size should I buy? I'm 5'8" with a 30-leg inseam. all measurements point towards medium?? Also, the rear brake cable hose and tubing. More than likely it is so the cable does not rattle and also no obstructions in the storage box. My thougts.
Do you know if the carbon shock yoke is available to purchase separately and what the weight difference is over the alloy one? I've built up an 11r frame and I'm looking for ways to shave some grams.
so the aftermarket FA shock is the same from the full build but not the fork tune? Looks like Spec also has a special fork tune for the fork is that right? I thought the aftermarket FA shock was also missing the magic middle specialized tune as well
Specialized does not have a specific fork tune. The aftermarket shock for the epic 8 comes tuned out of the box. When you buy a aftermarket flight attendant upgrade the specific bike the shock belongs to is listed with a specific part number. They even ship with the correct hardware
Building a 11r frame is the best way to get flight attendant without spending 14k. Shoot me an email sales@thebicyclestation.com I don't think any of the stock build make sense.
Hi, where can I find CS SLT bottom bearing for Epic 8 headset? I can only find top SLT bearing on their website. Thanks P.S. Yes, you can run wired derailleur on S-Works frame although Spec in their promo materials said that S-Works will only take wireless derailleurs P.S.2 I wish I lived in USA I would definitely order Epic 8 from you as I am looking for one at the moment. Can you buy non S-Works Epic 8 frameset in USA? P.S.3 regarding seat tube angle, I have noticed you ride M size Epic, and you look to be taller guy. Don't know how tall are you but did you consider L size? I am 5'10 and about 32" inseam, I am leaning towards L size. What do you think? Thanks in advance
How tall are you with a spot on fit for a medium? At 5’10” I’m feeling extremely crunched and worried I should have gone for the large…may try a longer stem but already feeling the weight thrown super far forward Building an sworks frame with remote lockout (not FA) & dropper was a nightmare of cable routing through the internal headset….worried I should have went for the 11m for durability eek
@@bicyclestation Awesome thank you! Slamming the seat back and a longer stem I suspect is the play - And thank you for the amazing content as I was torn between these two bikes and these videos have been fantastic.
Hi there, I see you are riding a size M bike, how tall are you? I am riding the previous model epic, do you recommend upgrading if the budget is there?
Could you compare max chainring sizes between the BC40 and Epic 8? I personally do a lot of intervals on the road and find myself running out of top end fairly easily with the stock 34 on my Epic.
It drives me absolutely crazy how many companies do not include maximum chainring size in their specs considering it is one of the most important specs you need to know if you build up your own bikes (especially if your concern is racing and you need that larger chainring to more closely match the speed of guys on gravel bikes). So many modern mountain bikes nowadays have a 32 max chainring size (because they overly prioritize wheel clearance at the expense of speed) which is absolutely bonkers. Even 36 max clearance is way too small in my opinion. It makes it impossible to do anything but really hilly gravel races, because as soon as you hit an extended flat section the gravel bikers just leave you in the dust. I would like to see more mountain bikes with at least 42 or 44 1x max chainring clearance.
@@Mrbarrowking 38 fits but I wouldn't run it just too close looks < 1mm. SL reg width crank & 0 offset. Might possibly work with wide crank but I have no way to confirm.

The tube is there for many reasons but the best one is to avoid rattling.
What’s the other reason. That’s the only one I can think of.
Downside is price, that’s about it.
Glad you got this video out!!
I think in this category it’s an upside. They sell one for 5000$
@ But not one like you are riding. I do commend them on a trickle down tech.
The tube in the mainframe is so the internal storage looks/functions cleaner. Otherwise you have a loose or zip tied brake hose
You guys should try carbon ti wheels and accessories

Try a 9point8 seatpost. It is one of the few droppers with 25mm of setback. I have used it for a couple years on "too steep" bikes.
