Sarah, you definitely are hip to the buzz in the book world! I enjoyed hearing for the first time about several books you finished this week. I am comforted that you were as baffled by The Lover as I was. Happy reading. 😊

I'm never current with book world buzz so I'm feeling mighty proud of myself right now. Lets hope the book is good...

I'm glad to hear that Smothermoss worked for you! I have a print copy that I've been wanting to get to!

I want to read more Tin House since they are a "local" publisher. Pick up Smothermoss in the fall/winter. It will fit right in to the grey and rain.

OMG Sarah my first Marguerite Duras didn't work with me either. Opaque was the word for that too. The Lover seems like a well-lauded book. By the way, I absolutely dislike it when a book just talks about characters or refer to them as he/she/just pronouns without names or more concrete identifiers. It's my pet peeve. I find myself struggling to latch onto the writing if it does that.

I just made it hard to follow sometimes, which pulls you right out of the book. Confusing your reader should be on a list of writing no-no's.
