  • KARL and me are doing some island hopping in the beautiful San Blas and I am grooving back into solo sailing. There are a couple of projects on the worklist before I can set off on my first slightly bigger solo trip, but I have some great help from my friend and every morning I wake up to a stunning scenery and a big smile on my face...
Enjoy, ahoy and thanks for watching,
    Nike & KARL

Nike, I'm glad to see you again getting a little sailing in. As to your engine issues, I hope you are getting them all solved. My main concern is possibly not having a one-way check valve in the fuel line. In my opinion, this is the best system to have for reliable fuel delivery when starting. There are after market kits you can buy. Needless to say, you can't afford to have an engine that won't start when the urgency arises ! See you next Friday and Happy sailing !

I love that you just jump in and get things done! Really, if someone else designed and built the thing, the least we can do is figure out how to fix it. A little common sense goes a long way, and you seem to have your fair share.
You are a continual source of inspiration, I was worried that you and Karl might divorce. Glad to see that you guys are back together.
Warm sounds so good right now. It's been in blowing with gusts in the 60's and the temps have been in the teens, and single digits here for weeks, I expect more before it gets any better.
"Freedom" a 30' Mercator Mark two home port Seward Alaska, and here for the last winter, It's beautiful here but... We've gotta change our latitude.
This spring it will be time to shove off for the southern climes and those warm tropical breezes.

    Hi,
thanks for the awesome videos! Some advice for stuck bolts:
    - screw extractors seldom work, most of the time they break and you end up with hardened steel (vhm) stuck in your mild steel bold which is even harder to get out, so most of the time they are a step back.
    - A better way is to drill a hole and then take a (too large) Torx Bit and bang it in the hole with a large hammer. The knocks usually loosen the bolt and you can directly attach your ratched/long lever to the bit. If it breaks it's easy to drill out because these are made of mild steel. Obviously you kill the Torx bit with that. An awesome opportunity to get rid of cheap bits :-)
    - soaking the bold in wd40 over days and days helps, excessive heat also (most of the time I don't dare that)
    - "dry" knocks with a big hammer on top of the bold
    - a not too sharp chisel on the outer diameter of the bolt (uncrewing it with the chisel)
Last but not least I would be afraid that the two component stuff is only a temporary fix and replace it with a threaded insert (helicoil, timesert, ...) whenever convenient. You'll probably meet some yachtie sooner or later who has the proper tools and the insert itself costs only a couple of cents.
    Liebe Grüße, Andi

      Hi Andi,
thanks for your great advice. Actually, it's funny cause we have tried all of your list ;). The problem was, that the hole for the extractor was not 100% in the middel and when we tried with a bigger drill bit, to try your first advice, it went too close to one of the sides...then we just drilled the hole open and tried to build a thread...but it was just impossible. The material was super hard and the area extremely difficult to reach...no way unfortunately. We tried the chisel as well, but there was hardly anything sticking out that we could grab onto. We worked on this thing for full two days...but in the end the two component thingy was the only one that would work...but I check it regularily and it still seems intact.
Thanks for sharing your knowlede, though :)

      Hi,
thanks for the lovely answer! Sometimes it is like that and the bolt wins. This happens to everybody, that's just how life is. Just two weeks ago a friend of mine had to pull out the whole engine and partly disassemble it so he could use a drill press to get to the culprit. But that was a car engine and he was inside a well equipped workshop, totally different story.
Feel free to contact me whenever you like opinions on jury rigging stuff in the field, it will probably be a year or so until I'll start some similar quest like yours and till then I'll be mostly stuck in front of a computer...
      Liebe Grüße, Andi

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  9 лет назад +2

Hi +Todd Boley, oh yes, she is my best mate EVER! I have used her a lot in the last half year. During the first year, I was just doing day trips and I did not really need her that much. Also, I like to hand stear (still do it quite often) to get a feeling for the boat. But now that I started to do "longer" sails, there is no way not to use her.
I still sometimes have problems setting her up right when sailing boom reach or downwind, and it is so frustrating when that happens and I have to hand stear. But I hope to improve that over time as well...we'll see.

The dog looked happy. Broken bolts are a PITA and are always in an awkward spot to get at. The best chemical I've found for loosening stuck/rusted bolts is "Kroil" unfortunately it must be mail ordered. I'd also get some high quality anti seize for the appropriate situations.

Epoxying that bolt in is not a bad idea. The "correct" fix would be a HeliCoil. Hole and thread specific, so not likely to find the proper one unless you are near a city with a good machine shop.

Hi MrDan27611, I put it up as the next step would be a 200nm passage to Cartagena...without a vindwane...that would be pretty tough as a solo passage ;). For day sailing, I enjoy being on the tillar...and also, for getting to know Karl and his movements, it has been good to feel him...but for more than a day, I depend on my wind vane. And she does a great job!!!

Hi myvidlocker, yeah, it made me pretty nuts as well ;). I am now just sailing with one sheet cause it was too annoying and not very safe either in my opinion. And usually, I sail on one side moste of the time anyways, so I set the sheet on the right side before I leave...and if I tack for a couple of hours, the sheet is on the wrong side for a short time...

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  8 лет назад +3

Hi +Susie Crawford, are you talking about the autopilot or the windvane? Windvane works nicely, but have to improve my trimm for downwind sailing still. Tillerpilot / autopilot does not work sooo well, as soon as there is a bit more waves going on. It is too small for my boat, but I am currently working on a construction to mount it so it will actually move the windvane which will then move the tiller and that will make it deal with up to 20tons instead of just 3 :). Well, have to see if it works...but trying to figure it out...

Looks like you have a new mascot. Beautiful dog. Regarding your wind vane, you can always back up your auto steering with sheet to tiller steering. It works really well and cost two pulleys and a bungee cord, which you probably already have. Here is a link to a video on RUclips that shows one working. Jean

Hi Lab Cat, when I sail, I usually wear a hat and a long sleeve shirt. That does a good job. And I use sunlotion all the time, factor 30, in the beginning 50. Alsways wearing a shirt when going fishing or snorkling as well. And later on, I bought a piece of cloth to make a sunshade for the cockpit, that is very helpful!

It takes some time sometimes until I get to it and when it is on some old videos, I have to admit that I might miss it cause I don't see it. Also, I can only see the comments on my computer, not on my tablet...and as I do not use my computer very often, it takes some time for me to answer everyone once I do get to do it.
Sorry if I have missed you question...it surely does not have anything to do with the fact if someone pays or not. How would I know here anyways, who pays and who does not? I am disabled and can only dream of doing what you so I watch vicariously .I lost my desire to see your lovely videos because you never answered me . I can only image you must of seen some of my post and only picked the ones your preferred ? Hey Moe, as I said above, there is no preference whatsoever to whom I answer. I try to answer every question that is being asked here and I usually spend a lot of time for doing so. But it does sometimes, by accident, happen that I miss one or two posts. If you can tell me where you posted then I can look it up and respond to it if you would like me to. Or you can just repeat your question here on this post, up to you.
      Have a nice day, Nike
