In San Francisco, I’m a senior ds with a traditional ML and product analytics background. I would say the market isn’t great, tons of competition so hard to get interviews and even when you do, the bar is super high. With that said, hopefully this is just a cycle that gets better soon.

It will. Business is always cyclical, and you're in one of the most competitive regions literally in the world.

I’m a military vet, I come from a quality manufacturing background as a quality manager, 7 years in a customer facing position, so I have a lot of Key transferable soft skills and some hard skills. I have a master’s in innovation and entrepreneurship, finishing up another masters in Business Analytics.
It is so hard to find a job out here, these employers act like God’s nowadays. But there’s one place I know that will value my skills - my own. With that being said, I’ve been working on starting up a lounge back in my hometown. I’m gonna be implementing a lot of data democratization, machine learning, to reduce costs and drive business growth. I’ve always had a passion for food and beverage industry so why not, and plus I love people.

Yeah, building your own skills and being able to productize yourself well will always pay off in the long run. That's a great balanced and somewhat unique skill set as well.

Going a little bit aggressive on the data engineering route is the best strategy imo because companies are really trying to get into the AI game and good data engineering practices enable AI to do its work well.
Also gratz on your Google certification🎉

Thanks! Planning a video soon on how to break into data engineering, going off of some personal experiences. You're very right, solid data engineering is a requirement for useful AI.

Out of all of the realms of IT and CS, Data Analysis was the one that peaked my interest in school. I hope this is just a cycle that will come to pass because finally landing with something I like within the subfields in my major, only for it to turn out into a nightmare when it comes to career propects would feel so defeating.

Just analyze the data on how many times politicians and the Fed lie to us. 😉

Dont get into the typical data analyst, scientist, engineer etc. Get into DATABASE (developer, administration etc) Less competition and higher demand. Can't get data to analyze, etl, or make predictions without the database. Master database development and you'll never worry about a job again.

It seems data science has a glut of people. We have folks from the bootcamps, self-study folks which is super easy now, and the first thing these folks' study are things like support vector machines.
Data engineer is like a traditional software engineer plus domain knowledge.
Generative AI is essentially a black box. It takes so much money to make these foundational that only the big boys can play. Nobody knows why these black box works by the way. So, the essentially thing for company is to create the data pipeline that feeds the data to these models. Which explains why we need data engineering.

You need to show us the graph representing ratio of subscribers to make the message hit home. 1:1 story telling with data J/K
