This was the first solo I ever transcribed by ear as a kid, sitting on the floor with my Squire and the Tandy tape recorder play, pause rewind hour after hour. Whilst making the tones for this video I realised I’ve not played this solo for nearly 30 years, and it was actually a ton of fun to dive back in and re-learn it. Gary really was a force of nature that bridged the gap for me between my classic blues rock hero’s of the 60s and the instrumental shred wizards of the 90s I was shortly about to discover. Fun times.
Those Guv’nor settings are also correct according to the official Gary Moore website Q&A section from a few years back. Your overall tone there is very, very close to the original!!! Nice video.
+++ hi David, this tone is so authentic and its the best version i have heared since the concert !!!! i was very close to the stage and had a perfect view on him from above. He was playing his SLO100 with a Tubescreamer and the Sound was even bigger than on the record i almost forgot to breeth. Now i am surprised that you tone is so so close with a slightly different amp, but i love it, thank you so much for bringing back this memories+++ your playing is giagantic !!! greetings from Germany
Hi again, thanks for the kind words. I never got to see Gary live sad to say, but I'm sure it was phenomenal. Yea, I know he changed to SLO and tube screamers at some point in the mid 90s perhaps? I was just trying to get the album version tone here, so using gear I think he used in the sessions (According to internet research). Thanks again for watching the videos! :) Beebs
I’d love a lesson on this and tone build on the HX stomp. BTW, I’m love fretboard visualisation course - slowly working my way through it. Thanks for all the great work!
Great video David! Blues rock is a bit of a meme for us old fellas but I was living and working in Hong Kong when this came out. It’s one of those tunes that takes me back to a place and time. Great info, well presented as always. Also, as a non-legato player good old picking content is great to see. More power to your elbow!
Thanks Andy! Interesting thing; I’m pretty pleased with how accurate it turned out note, tone and phrasing wise, but I’m cheating most of the licks with hybrid picking 😂 I just don’t have that blues fire picking hand! 😂
I own one of those original Gov'nors, but I lent it to a friend... I don't think I'll ever see that again! Aren't they worth quite a bit now? Great playing btw.
Cheers! Yea the originals were getting more expensive on the used market but the reissues from last year were so good I think it took a bit of the edge off the prices. The mark I bluesbreakers are still pretty pricey cause of the Mayer effect I think.
It would be fantastic if you could do a lesson on this transcription. (without listening back to back?..) your performance sounds pretty much spot on to me!
David - Your demo gives the impression that you're using the SEND and RETURN to patch in the Guv'nor through these in/outs. Are you in fact just using the Guv'nor prior to the input to the FM3? I'm using IN2 & OUT2 to patch in the Guv'nor after the cab.
There's a good version of The Loner with Clem Clemson on guitar, with the middle bit (similar to the intro) that GM started substituting. This is one of them, but there's also a couple of radio versions, one better than the other. ruclips.net/video/9kFPojO8fSQ/видео.htmlsi=rVLJBFhg8zfnkuqh&t=80

Oh nice, is that still available on the web somewhere I'd love to read it. Thanks for the kind words
I’ll have a look around for the info as it appears to have been deleted from the official website. 👍🏻
My dad used to play this. He was a great GM fan. Lost him just before Christmas, a good memory you’ve just brought back to me.
Aww man, sorry for your loss. Thanks for watching dude.

Great work David, could you upload your backing track as well, thanks.
